In 2023, Amazon announced that it was developing a Bosch and Bosch: Legacy spinoff series about J. Edgar. Jamie Hector – who played J. Edgar on seven seasons of Bosch – was supposed to reprise his role in the new show, which would follow the LAPD detective as he takes on an undercover FBI operation in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood.

“Can’t wait to get to work,” Hector tweeted after the show was announced.

Now, Amazon has scuttled plans for the show, according to a recent report from Deadline. Amazon has pumped the brakes on two projects that would have brought TV characters back to our screens. One is a Bosch spinoff centering on J. Edgar (Jamie Hector); the other is a sequel to the ’80s sitcom Who’s the Boss? The Bosch spinoff isn’t moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios, and the Who’s the Boss? sequel isn’t proceeding at Amazon Freevee, according to Deadline. The first project first made headlines in February 2023, with the news that Amazon was developing two Bosch spinoffs, one focused on Detective Jerry Edgar and another focused on the then-unknown character Renée Ballard. The tech giant’s Freevee streaming service has scuttled a sequel to the 1980s sitcom Who’s The Boss?, which had original series stars Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano attached to reprise their roles. Amazon MGM Studios, meanwhile, has pulled the plug on a Bosch spinoff centering on Jamie Hector’s character, Detective Jerry Edgar.

The Who’s the Boss? sequel found a home at Freevee in 2022 after two years in development at Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to the original series. Milano was set to star as Samantha Micelli, now a single mother living in the same house where she grew up in the original show, which ran from 1984-92 on ABC. Danza was also set to return as her father, now retired.

Amazon MGM Studios is not moving forward with two television shows that were in the works.

It was previously reported that Amazon Freevee was planning a Who’s the Boss? sequel series starring Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano, but the project is no longer happening.

Deadline reports that the project was originally set up at Freevee in 2022 and would take place 30 years after the events of the original series.

Alyssa‘s Samantha would now be a single mother living in the family house with her father Tony, a former Major League Baseball player/retired housekeeper.

That’s not the only project not moving forward.

Amazon is adding another actor to its expanding Bosch universe.

John Carroll Lynch has joined the third show in the franchise, centering on LAPD detective Renée Ballard (to be played by Maggie Q). The untitled series, which will stream on Prime Video, follows Ballard as she takes on running the department’s cold case division — an underfunded, all-volunteer unit with a huge case load. The character has appeared in several of Bosch author Michael Connelly’s novels.

Lynch (American Horror Story, Big Sky) will play Thomas Laffont, a retired former partner of Ballard’s who comes back to help her run the the department. He’s a kind, seasoned detective and crack interrogator.

The spinoff — one of two additional shows set in the same world as both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy — will be set up in the season three finale of the latter series, which is likely to premiere later this year.

Mayor of Kingstown returns for a brilliant third season with Jeremy Renner returning as the lead after an injury-related break. The Paramount+ series follows the McLusky family, who are a very big deal in their town Kingstown. The series stars Renner in the lead role with Kyle Chandler, Emma Laird, Natasha Marc, Nichole Galicia, Hugh Dillon, Dianne West, Necar Zadegan, Tobi Bamtefa, and Taylor Handley starring in supporting roles. The Bosch universe is expanding. Prime Video has ordered a spinoff of its popular detective drama that will focus on Detective Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s cold case division.

The as-yet-untitled series will follow Ballard, an LAPD detective tasked with running the department’s new cold case division. It’s “a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest caseload in the city,” per the announcement, but “Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination.”

The new show will have 10 episodes and premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood will serve as showrunners. There’s no word yet on who will play Detective Ballard.

Amazon’s Prime Video has placed a series order for a second spinoff of the crime drama. The untitled series will focus on Renée Ballard, an LAPD detective who’s a major character in several novels from author Michael Connelly, the creator of the Harry Bosch character and an executive producer on both Prime Video’s Bosch and its Freevee spinoff/sequel, Bosch: Legacy.

The pickup comes a week after Bosch: Legacy concluded its second season on Freevee.

Michael Alaimo (The Closer, The Man Who Fell to Earth) and Kendall Sherwood (Your Honor) will serve as showunners and executive producers on the new series. When we last saw Maddie Bosch, things weren’t looking good. A masked assailant abducted the rookie LAPD officer at the end of Bosch: Legacy Season 1. In season 2, which premiered Oct. 20 on Amazon Freevee, her dad Harry Bosch is frantic to find his daughter, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to save her, even if it brings him into conflict with his former partner Jerry Edgar.

In an upcoming episode of Bosch: Legacy Season Two, private investigator Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver) asks a favor of a couple of colleagues from his days as an LAPD homicide detective. Their exchange is terse and extremely one-sided in favor of the self-righteous Bosch. As he walks away, Christina Vega (Jacqueline Obradors) mutters, “Same old Bosch.”

“Same old Bosch” might as well be the actual title of Bosch: Legacy, which is among the least spinoff-y of spinoffs ever made(*). It brings back the hero of Bosch as its main character.

Harry Bosch will tackle his most personal case yet in Bosch: Legacy Season 2. The Amazon Freevee series returns on Oct. 20, picking up after the cliffhanger season 1 ending that saw Harry’s daughter (and rookie cop) Maddie apparently kidnapped by the screen-cutter rapist.

Finding out what happened to Maddie will be a central thread in the upcoming episodes of the Bosch spinoff. The new season will also pick up some lingering threads from season 1, including more developments in the ongoing saga of crooked financier Carl Rogers. Don’t mess with this dad. Amazon Freevee has revealed the first teaser for Bosch: Legacy Season 2, which premieres this October, and things are intense, to say the least. Harry Bosch is on the hunt for his daughter Maddie, who was abducted in the season 1 finale. He’s not going to let anything stand in the way of finding her, even his former partner, J. Edgar.

‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 2 picks up after last season’s cliffhanger

Bosch: Legacy’s first season ended on a major cliffhanger when rookie LAPD officer Maddie (Madison Lintz) was kidnapped by a masked assailant – presumably the infamous screen-cutter rapist. Season 2 will pick up after that event as retired cop turned Pi Harry (Titus Welliver) hunts down the man who took his only child.

“Maddie’s been taken,” he says in the first teaser for the new season (via YouTube). “Tell me what I’m supposed to do.

Plot: Picking up a few months after the end of Vacation Friends, this hilarious sequel finds newly married couple Marcus and Emily inviting their uninhibited besties Ron and Kyla, who are also newly married and have a baby, to join them for a vacation when Marcus lands an all-expenses-paid trip to a Caribbean resort. His reason for traveling there in the first place is to meet with the owners of the resort to bid on a construction contract for a hotel they own in Chicago. But when Kyla’s incarcerated father, Reese, is released from San Quentin and shows up at the resort unannounced at the worst possible moment, things get out of control, upending Marcus’ best-laid plans and turning the vacation friends’ perfect trip into total chaos.

Freevee announced today that Bosch: Legacy Season 2 will premiere Friday, October 20, 2023.

Four new episodes will be available on the release date, followed by two each week through November 10.

The series will also be available day and date as an Amazon Original in 35 other territories around the world via Prime Video.

Bosch: Legacy follows Harry Bosch, a retired homicide detective turned private investigator, as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.

Also along for the ride is attorney Honey "Money" Chandler, who struggles to maintain her faith in the justice system after surviving an attempted murder.

Maddie Bosch is also front and center as she discovers the possibilities and challenges of being a rookie patrol cop on the streets of Los Angeles.

Harry Bosch is returning to Amazon Freevee on Oct. 20 – and he’s taking matters into his own hands to save his daughter in a new teaser for “Bosch: Legacy” Season 2.

The drama series’ second season finds Bosch (Titus Welliver) working alongside Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) to track down a masked assailant who kidnapped his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) before time runs out. But as the FBI scrutinizes Carl Rogers’ murder, Bosch and Chandler are placed under suspicion.

In the clip, Jerry Edgar (Jamie Hector) tells Bosch that he needs to let authorities do their job to find his daughter, to which he replies: “Don’t cut me out!.” He also makes clear that while the FBI has to do things the “right way,” those rules don’t apply to him.

On track to premiere sometime this fall (exact date Tba), Season 2 of the Titus Welliver-led Freevee series will pick up right where Season 1 left off, with Harry’s daughter (played by Madison Lintz) having gone missing — presumably abducted by the lucha libre mask-wearing man who was hiding in her closest at the close of the freshman finale.

2021 was unquestionably the Summer of Cena, as John Cena appeared in "Fast 9," "The Suicide Squad," and the truly delightful "Vacation Friends." The latter was, in this writer's opinion, the first comedy film since "Blockers" that truly knew how to play to Cena's comedic strengths as a leading man, and pairing him alongside Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out'), Yvonne Orji ("Insecure"), and Meredith Hagner ("Search Party") was a recipe for comedy gold. The film was a huge hit on Hulu, snagging a sequel greenlight less than a month after its debut on the Disney-owned streamer. Less than two years later, the foursome is back for "Vacation Friends 2," reuniting with writer-director Clay Tarver in the process. 

The sequel picks up a few months after the first film, which saw Ron (Cena) and a pregnant Kyla (Hagner) finally tying the knot, doing so with their new friends Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) by their side.

The stars of 20th Century Studios’ Vacation Friends reunite for the appropriately titled Vacation Friends 2 which just debuted a full trailer. John Cena (Peacemaker), Meredith Hagner (Search Party), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), and Yvonne Orji (Insecure) reprise their roles as two couples who became friends during a wild vacation in Mexico. The sequel finds the unlikely travel companions heading to the Caribbean for what’s supposed to be a relaxing reunion. Spoiler alert: it’s anything but.

Things are shaping up for Bosch: Legacy Season 2. The Amazon Freevee series – which the streamer has already renewed for season 3 – will return in the fall of 2023. The new episodes will pick up after season 1’s cliffhanger ending, which seemingly saw the screen cutter rapist abduct Maddie Bosch. The show’s three core cast members will be back, as well as a number of supporting characters from Bosch: Legacy Season 1 and Prime Video’s original Bosch series.

Update (5/1/2023): After previously teasing two spinoffs earlier this year, Prime Video and Amazon Freevee confirmed Jamie Hector‘s involvement in an upcoming Bosch universe spinoff. Categorized as the Untitled J. Edgar project, the series will see Jamie Hector reprise his role as Detective Jerry Edgar who is tapped for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami. Amazon is betting big on Harry Bosch. Freevee has renewed the Bosch spinoff Bosch: Legacy for season 3. The news comes months ahead of the show’s upcoming season 2 premiere in fall 2023.

Bosch aired for seven seasons on Prime Video and starred Titus Welliver as LAPD detective Harry Bosch. The gruff but principled Harry approached each of his complex cases with the same motto in mind: Everybody counts or nobody counts. That show ended in 2021, but a spinoff, Bosch: Legacy, premiered in 2022. Welliver reprised his role as Harry, who is working as a private detective following his retirement from the police department.
