San Sebastian — Blessed by blowsy sun, two Conferences and a Co-Pro Forum, which brought the highest caliber and number of U.S., European execs and Latin American producers ever seen in festival history, San Sebastian rounded its final bend Friday after a packed, busy and upbeat event, also suggesting a stability in contrast to other major European events, such as Berlin.
Below, eight takeaways, some 24 hours before Saturday night’s closing gala and prize ceremony.
Women Rule Still
Coming into the festival, many of the biggest main competition buzz pictures were directed by women. Many now figure, according to a El Diario Vasco Spanish critics’ poll, as Golden Shell frontrunners: Isabel Helguera’s animated pic “Sultana’s Dream,” Raven Jackson’s Sundance hit “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt,” Jaione Camborda’s Toronto platform screener “The Rye Horn” and Tzu-Hui Peng and Ping-Wen Wang’s “A Journey in Spring.”

Many TV legends and contributors were included for the “In Memoriam” segment on Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony for ABC. But producers are always forced to omit some of the 100+ insiders who died since the last ceremony. Who was left out of the group that was honored?
With dozens of television veterans having died since last year’s mid-September ceremony, people certainly included were these six TV Academy Hall of Fame members:
Diahann Carroll
Leonard Goldberg (executive at 20th Century Fox and ABC; producer of “Charlie’s Angels” and more)
Jim Lehrer (anchor/reporter of “MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour)
Regis Philbin
Carl Reiner
Fred Silverman

The Smurfs have landed on the big-screen and the movie is a hit. While it will take awhile for the feature film to be offered on DVD, the original cartoon adventures are available already.
As you may recall, The Smurfs ran from 1981 until 1989 and were a cornerstone of NBC's Saturday morning line-up. Led by wise and gentle Papa Smurf, the cute little blue creatures did their best to live happily in the forest and to stay hidden from the outside world, particularly from evil wizard Gargamel and his nasty cat, Azrael. Some of the best vocal talent in the business provided the voices — actors like Don Messick, Lucille Bliss, Frank Welker, Danny Goldman, June Foray, Michael Bell, William Callaway, Hamilton Camp, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young, and Paul Winchell.

Has this ever happened to you at a commercial callback? It's a car insurance ad. The 30-something director, who's wearing all black because that shows everyone what a hip, edgy guy he is, asks the actors to pick an animal. Now, he says, play out the scene—involving a car crash and the subsequent conversation with the insurance adjuster—as that animal. No, this isn't on the storyboards. Sure, he just took the Acting Exercises class in film school. Do you do it, however unlikely the commercial will be shot that way? Or do you think, "I'm not playing along with this crap!" and refuse? Well, if that's what the young-hip-edgy director wants to see, do you think you stand any chance of getting cast if you don't play ball? Even if he's an idiot, you've got to make him believe you'll be nice to have on the set all day.

The characters in the upcoming The Smurfs movie will be played by an all-star cast. We know that Jonathan Winters is voicing Papa Smurf, Katy Perry will provide the Smurfette's vocals, George Lopez will perform Grouchy, and Alan Cumming will voice an all-new character, Gutsy Smurf. Quentin Tarantino was in talks to play Brainy but that apparently won't be happening now.
A few characters will be live and not cartoon, similar to the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. Hank Azaria will play a live Gargamel, Neil Patrick Harris will appear as Johan, an expectant father, and Jayma Mays will play his pregnant wife.
But, what about the original cartoon voices? Some of the best talent in the business provided the voices -- names like Don Messick, Lucille Bliss, Frank Welker, Danny Goldman, June Foray, Michael Bell, William Callaway, Hamilton Camp, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young, and...
