In a new book, British author Piu Eatwell reveals unpublicized details about the notorious 1940’s murder mystery of the “Black Dahlia,” presenting a case that the starlet’s killer was an accused pimp who had Hollywood connections.
On the morning of January, 15, 1947, the mutilated body of aspiring Hollywood actress Elizabeth Short was discovered on the sidewalk of a Los Angeles parking lot. The 22-year-old’s body was found cut in half. She had been bathed and drained of blood.
As details of her gruesome murder began to emerge, the press dubbed her the Black Dahlia after the exotic but intoxicating flower.

I’m in danger of turning into a broken record on this subject: Geary has been doing the same thing brilliantly for so long that I’ve run out of different ways to say it.
Black Dahlia is the seventh in his “Treasury of XXth Century Murder,” which followed eight similar books in the “Treasury of Victorian Murder” (and one even earlier book, The Treasury of Victorian Murder, Vol. 1, a miscellaneous collection that was the prototype for the whole sub-career). Each one is a roughly comic-book-sized hardcover, of about eighty pages, telling the story of one famous historical murder. He’s done Abraham Lincoln and James Garfield, Jack the Ripper and H.H. Holmes, Sacco and Vanzetti and several more not as well-known in the 21st century. Each book is carefully researched and filled with maps and diagrams of the towns and murder locations — all drawn by Geary in his precise but puckish style.

Nicole Stark (Obsidian Curse), Charlie Glakin (From Hell to the Wild West) and Playboy model April Summers will centrally star. Shooting will begin this February 10th. I saw The Black Dahlia the day it opened in the fall of 2006. I can safely say it was one of my favorite moviegoing experiences. My husband and I saw it at AMC River East 21, which is one of Chicago’s largest multiplexes. The showing we went to was sold-out. There must have been 400 people there. The movie started, everyone was quiet and seemed excited for the celeb-packed whodunit we were about to see. Slowly, muffled giggles could be heard from different points of the theatre, mostly whenever Aaron Eckhart or Josh Hartnett mumbled “Fire and Ice.” By the middle of the movie, people were openly laughing at Hartnett’s silly, serious narration. Everyone went ballistic when, referring to the resemblance between Hilary Swank and Black Dahlia Elizabeth Short, Scarlett Johansson yells, “She looks like that dead girl!” We went even more ballistic when a woman sitting near me in the audience screamed,...

There’s no business like show business, and there’s no place quite like Hollywood.
The movie business set up shop there back in 1910, meaning there is over a century of history about the place, and it is as storied as the movies themselves. There are countless tales to be told, from the Oscars to Orson Welles, Chaplin to Cruise, and the silent films to summer blockbusters. Almost every aspiring actor, writer, or director wants to make it to Tinseltown; it’s the place where dreams – and careers – are made.
However, look beyond that cinematic sheen, past the stars the on Walk of Fame and the handprints outside of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and you’ll find something a little less glamourous. Horror movies are often “based on” real-world experiences, but there are few sources of inspiration that are more unnerving than the chilling viral video that birthed this season of “American Horror story." “American Horror Story: Hotel” creator Ryan Murphy was on hand at today’s TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour to talk about the upcoming season, which he assured will “return to the Season 1 roots” and “tap into true primal fears.” He’s off to a good start in terms of inspiring a visceral sense of terror if the origin of this season’s story is anything to judge by. The idea for “Hotel” – which takes place in a downtown Los Angeles hotel and taps into “real American horrors” – came to Murphy after watching a viral video of Elisa Lam in what appear to be her final moments on Earth. Lam was a Canadian student whose body was discovered...

I interviewed James Ellroy, the great American noir novelist, at La's venerable Pacific Dining Car in April 2001. We were there to discuss his latest book, The Cold Six Thousand, but wound up tackling a myriad of subjects over our three hour lunch. Ellroy sported a snappy fedora that I said would have looked great on Meyer Lansky. He barked a laugh and removed it, displaying his bald pate. When he looked at my full head of 33 year-old hair, his eyes narrowed: "That thing on your head real or a rug?" "Real," I replied. Ellroy exhaled for what seemed like a full minute, then murmured: "Cocksucker." We were off and running.

Last week Wamg took to Hollywood Blvd. to scout out some of the most haunted locations for clues in celebration of the release of Ouija on Blu-Ray and DVD (February 3rd). Watson Adventures devised a fun-filled list of places and clues for press members, and sent us out in four different groups to unravel the mysteries of one of the most haunted areas in California.
After the scavenger hunt, guests were treated to an open bar at the historical Boardner’s by La Belle. The historic bar is rumored to be the last place Elizabeth Short was seen alive. She would later be referred to as the Black Dahlia.
Guests enjoyed Ouija themed cocktails, and learned a little bit about Ouija boards from Robert L. Murch, who is the chairman of the board at the Talking Board Historical Society. I asked him about whether there was a difference between the Parker Bros.

The Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles is notorious for its dark and haunted history: serial killer Richard Ramirez (The Night Stalker) and “Black Dahlia” murder victim Elizabeth Short had both stayed there, and the building has played host to numerous gruesome deaths – the most recent of which involved the body of a missing student discovered in a rooftop water tank after hotel guests reported foul-smelling black water coming from their taps. Elizabeth Short was only 22 when her mutilated body was found in Los Angeles' Leimert Park in 1947. The press nicknamed her the Black Dahlia, and 66 years later her unsolved murder has inspired numerous books and films — including Brian De Palma's unfortunate 2006 neo-noir retelling. One tome, however, has led to what many are saying is a break in the lingering case. Steve Hodel wrote Black Dahlia Avenger, claiming his deceased father, George Hodel, is the killer. The retired Lapd vet makes an interesting case, providing accounts of wild, celeb-filled orgies, an obsession with Marquis de Sade and Jack the Ripper, and a surrealist art connection to Man Ray. Now, cadaver dogs were sent to the late Hodel's Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house (where parts of The Aviator...

The Taps team touched a dark piece of Hollywood history on the season premiere of "Ghost Hunters." They investigated the infamous house where the Black Dahlia murder took place in 1947. The case was never solved.
Former Lapd homicide detecitve Steve Hodel used to live in the house with his family. He believes that his father, who was a prominent surgeon, killed Elizabeth Short, and possibly even more women in that basement. Short was found cut in half. Steve's father, George, was a suspect at the time and fled the country.
The team investigated the home and brought their findings to another woman who'd lived in the house after the Hodels. "Am I hearing the word ‘George’?" she asked upon listening to the recordings.
At another point, it sounded like a woman's voice saying, "Did you even know my name?"

The website, Little White Lies, recently had an article with Sean Bean in which he lists and provides behind-the-scenes information on his top five on-screen deaths scenes. Making the list was his death scene in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, when Uruk-hai leader Lurtz uses Boromir as a dartboard. Also making the list were Black Death (2010), Patriot Games (1992), The Field (1990) and Equilibrium (2002). To read Bean's descriptions of those scenes click here. Now keep in mind, Sean Bean may be easy to kill on-screen, but that doesn't mean he is any sort of pushover in real life. Take this story for instance, it's from The Daily Mail, it's a fun read. In 2011 Sean Bean went to a local pub with April Summers, a Playboy model three decades younger than him (Nice!). At some point during the night a passerby made a lewd...

The clouds swirling around the second season of FX’s American Horror Story are starting to clear up, allowing fans to look into the crystal ball. Before Season 1 ended, co-creator Ryan Murphy hinted that the new season would bring back Jessica Lange to star. Lange would go on to win a Golden Globe for her performance as the politically incorrect nosy neighbor Constance. Murphy also dropped seeds that the setting would relocate to the East Coast, a place hinted at in the Season 1′s penultimate episode, “Birth.” Murphy spoke Wednesday at a panel in North Hollywood at the TV Academy, promoting Ahs and revealed more concrete details.
The Second Season “is set on the East Coast at an institution for the criminally insane that is run by Jessica,” Murphy said. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the table conversation in “Birth” shared by Constance, her medium friend, Billie Dean and Violet...

American Horror Story Review, Season 1, Episode 9, “Spooky Little Girl”
Written by Jennifer Salt
Directed by John Scott
Airs Wednesdays at 10:00 pm Et on FX
“Spooky Little Girl” covers a lot of ground. It introduces a possible recurring character and spends equal time with several plotlines. This week, Hayden discovers more about her potential as a spirit, having more fun in the house while Vivien is stuck in the mental institution. Ben struggles with the temptations of Moira and his new alluring patient, Elizabeth. The show also spends more time with Constance’s relationship to her boy toy Travis. The episode finds a good rhythm in the exposition of these multiple stories and keeps the ball rolling for next week.
The opening flashback, set in 1947, incorporates the famous, real life Black Dahlia murder into the show’s mythology. Considering the murder was never solved, the writers take liberty in weaving...

The American Horror Story house is famous.
Well, at least one of its numerous murder victims is, anyway, as we learn in “Spooky Little Girl.” Turns out that none other than the Black Dahlia herself was killed on the premises. It was an accident, mind you, but the results were the same. A dentist takes up residence in the house in the 1940s, and Mena Suvari’s Elizabeth Short stops by to have a cavity filled (cue a sexual innuendo that’s so obvious it would have Michael Scott yelling “That’s what she said”). The dentist gives her some knockout gas, sexually assaults her, and then is dismayed to find that he upped the dose of gas a little too much and Short is dead. Not to worry: Dr. Frankenstein house mainstay Charles Montgomery is on the case. It’s he who carves up Short and gives birth to the Dahlia legend.

After an intense and disturbing episode last week - let's call it Tate Misbehavin'! - American Horror Story dialed down the intensity last night and instead delivered a soapy tale steeped in Hollywood nostalgia, supernatural terror and high camp.
I of course mean this as the highest form of compliment.
So throw on your best fishnet stockings and fascinator and let's cut this baby apart, shall we? Oh - sorry, Thaddeus, no offense.
On a sunny California day, an old-timey cab pulls up in front of the Murder House. A lady in killer hooker pumps gets out and struts up the walk, passing a woman dragging along a boy in what looks like orthodontic headgear from the Hoover administration. She turns and smiles - it's Mena Suvari! She wears a flower in her hair - and since we already know what role Ms. MeMe has been brought on board to play,...

We're not sure what was the more disturbing revelation this week on 'American Horror Story' (Wed., 9Pm Et on VH1). That Tate fathered one of Vivian's children, which may mean that it's the Antichrist. That Hayden lost her cool and killed Constance's young lover. Or, that Ben finally saw the real Moira O'Hara.
We're sure for Ben it was the latter, as she told him that he's finally starting to see things for what they really are and then he saw her for the Frances Conroy she really is. When Elizabeth Short (Mena Suvari) walked in as a surprise patient, Ben didn't realize he was seeing the Black Dahlia, just as he refused to see that Hayden was a ghost.
