Mary Lynn Rajskub and Jay Ryan have boarded the Netflix, CBC and Aptn comedy North of North, which has started production in Nunavut in northern Canada.
Rajskub played Chloe O’Brian on the long-running 24 drama and also starred in the comedy Night School with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and Mayfield Games with Mira Sorvino. Ryan is a veteran of New Zealand soaps and series like Mary Kills People and Beauty and the Beast.
Other new cast members for North of North include Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Kelly William, Zorga Qaunaq, Doreen Simmonds and Tanya Tagaq. They join the previously-announced lead Anna Lambe, who plays young Inuk mother Siaja, with Keira Cooper, a 7 year-old actress from Iqaluit, Nunavut, playing her daughter Bun.
Siaja wants to build a new future for herself, not easily done in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business, according to a synopsis for North of North from the producers.

Viewers of True Detective: Night Country may find the forbidding darkness and snow-caked backdrop of the Arctic-set Max crime drama jarring, especially as Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in fur-hooded parkas breathe out cold wisps of air while investigating evil all around them.
But co-star Anna Lambe found the frigidly cold, dark filming set for the latest True Detective season more like home sweet home. “I was snug as a bug in a rug,” says the Inuk actor from Grise Fiord, Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost community, who tells The Hollywood Reporter she embraced the permanent darkness and freezing cold of a winter in Iceland, which doubled as remote Alaska during production.
Lambe plays Kayla Prior, the wife of young cop Peter Prior (Finn Bennett), who defends her family amid the primal beauty and ferocity of a snowbound Alaskan winter while Foster and Reis investigate a cold-case murder and the mysterious...

It may sound like we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel with sports films if we’re now showcasing lacrosse. However, in the case of director Miranda de Pencier’s “The Grizzlies,” our barrel runneth over. Like any good, inspirational athletic adventure, the film forges a strong connection with the human side of the story. There’s a fervent, fiery emotional drive propelling this true-life tale of a teacher who inspired his underdog students to take up their sticks, overcome unrelenting sorrow and unite an unsung community. The film, which premiered at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival, saw its March 20 U.S. release date delayed due to the coronavirus, which is a shame since it’s exactly the type of uplifting movie that could boost spirits during these bleak times.

As theaters shutter and big studio films postpone wide theatrical releases, indie and arthouse films are trying their best to navigate the waters of the coronavirus outbreak. Like big banner titles, many indie films that were set to release this weekend are opting to delay their debuts, while a handful are opting for a digital release — which is often common for the specialty space.
The Mangurama/Abramorama title Dosed was set to be released in theaters in New York starting Friday and was set to expand on March 27 in Los Angeles. Instead, they have opted to do a global release on digital with 10% from every purchase of the film going to coronavirus disaster relief, which will be matched by Facebook. Once theaters reopen, they will pull the film from streaming and resume theatrical release.

Netflix's Anne With an E has run out of kindred spirits. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama will conclude with season three. The third and final season will debut on Netflix early in 2020. It's the latest in a long line of shows that, infamously, are cancelled by Netflix after completing a three-season run.

The riveting true crime podcast “Thunder Bay” – which explores the incredibly high homicide and hate crime rates in Thunder Bay, Ontario – will be developed for television, it was announced Thursday, and will show a darker side to Canada that hasn’t been witnessed by the rest of the world.
The project will be co-produced by Miranda de Pencier’s Northwood Entertainment, known for “Anne With an E,” alongside Anishinaabe comedian/writer/podcaster Ryan McMahon, and journalist and Canadaland founder/publisher, Jesse Brown.
The critically acclaimed podcast examines not just the killings of nine Indigenous high school students, but what factors led to their deaths. This includes the impact of colonialism and the rampant racism typical of smaller cities that contributed to their deaths.

Arriving in Kugluktuk, Nunavut — a remote settlement in Canada’s Arctic North — to teach History, recent graduate Russ Sheppard (Ben Schnetzer) thinks he knows it all. However, his class is poorly attended, his pupils are disaffected and his lessons fall on deaf ears. Hoping to tackle the triple treat of depression, alcoholism and suicide by engendering some healthy competition and galvanising the whole community, Russ attempts to establish a local lacrosse team. Firstly, however, he needs to find players — something student Miranda (Emerald MacDonald) assures him won’t be possible until he convinces classmates Adam (Ricky Marty-Pahtaykan) and Zack (Paul Nutarariaq) to play.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has announced its 2019 lineup, and it’s prodigious: 223 films from 78 countries, four of them world premieres. Though well known for celebrating future Oscar nominees (and winners) each year, the festival also boasts a deceptively robust world-cinema slate; among the upcoming offerings are Jia Zhangke’s “Ash Is Purest White,” Sergey Loznitsa’s “Donbass,” Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s “Birds of Passage,” and Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s “Asako I & II,” to name just a few.
A number of post-screening Q&As will also be held, including with “Black Klansman” author Ron Stallworth and “Support the Girls” star Regina Hall, in addition to a new section celebrating the best films to screen at Psiff throughout its first three decades.
World premieres:
Buck Run (USA), Director Nick Frangione
Carlos Almaraz Playing With Fire (USA), Directors Elsa Flores Almaraz, Richard Montoya (Schlesinger Documentary Competition)

Los Cabos, Mexico — The 7th Los Cabos Festival, the most industrially-minded of Mexico’s film events, was the first to take place in full-blown digital Ott revolution.
Two TV panels, the biggest ever at Los Cabos, packed out by some of the foremost Latino TV and Ot show-runners, producers and directors, debated the huge, multi-faceted and still fast-evolving impact the digital platforms are having, and will have, on the industry. The result was maybe the most intense industry debate Los Cabos has ever seen. Eight takeaways:
1.Latin America Gets What It Needs
The panels underscored the huge paradigm shift in just a few years. For decades, Latin American TV production was dominated by free-to-air networks, producing in-house, producer Alex Garcia reminded a Los Cabos industry audience. Independent production companies – Mexico’s Argos, Argentina’s Pol-ka and Underground – were huge exceptions, their fortunes tied to producing for specific broadcasters. Then came the pay TV revolution.

Before walking the red carpet Sept. 11 for the world premiere of her third feature, the Sasheer Zamata-starring pic “The Weekend,” pictured above, Toronto-born writer-director Stella Meghie was feted with five other Canadian cinema artists at the sixth annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film, co-presented with partner Telefilm Canada at a splashy private event Sept. 10.
Meghie, whose debut comedy “Jean of the Jones” screened here in 2016, and Quebec director Jeanne Leblanc, now at work on her second feature, “Les notres,” are honored in the Emerging Talent category, which was added this year.

This year’s Canadian feature slate — 25 in all — can be seen in six Tiff sections including Discovery, Tiff Docs and Wavelengths.
Among the selected features are highly anticipated films from fest alumni including Denys Arcand, Barry Avrich and the late Rob Stewart.
Arcand’s “The Fall of the American Empire” stars Alexandre Landry as Pierre-Paul Daoust, who faces a moral dilemma after discovering two bags of money. Sony Classics bought the North American rights to the film during the Cannes Film Festival in May. The film, which will play in Tiff’s special presentations section, is a thematic cousin to Arcand’s Oscar-nominated “The Decline of the American Empire” and the Oscar-winning “The Barbarian Invasions” (2003).
Avrich returns to Tiff’s docu section with “Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz,” a portrait of the United States’ chief prosecutor during the Nuremberg trial. Stewart’s final film, “Sharkwater Extinction” will...

Hollywood has shown real progress when it comes to increasing the conversations, panels, events, pledges, studies, and campaigns dedicated to women and female filmmakers. Actual results, however, are another matter, as the industry continues to grapple with changing its dismal number of female filmmakers. At Tiff, the story is changing, of the 342 films in this year’s Tiff lineup, about 36 percent are directed by women.
That’s still short of parity, of course, but it’s a quantitative improvement on the major festivals’ current track record. The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film recently found that when it comes to programming films by women, the top 23 film festivals (including Tiff) average just over 32 percent. More importantly, however, it represents ongoing and consistent progress, the kind that all those conversations, panels, events, pledges, studies, and campaigns are all aiming to actually impact.

Anne Shirley and her beloved Green Gables are being introduced to a new generation thanks to Netflix's period drama Anne With an E. As any fan of the book series knows, Prince Edward Island is the home of Green Gables and Anne's many childhood adventures. The stunning island was also where author Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote the novels, which were first published in 1908. Gorgeous though it may be, Canada's Prince Edward Island is relatively small, and, according to thelocationguide.com, it doesn't offer a great deal of tax incentives for filmmakers. As a result, filming there full-time would be pricey for an ongoing series - and that's exactly why the series is primarily shot in a different, and much more affordable, Canadian city.
In an interview with the CBC, executive producer Miranda de Pencier confirmed that Anne With an E is filmed almost entirely in Ontario, Canada. De Pencier...

Netflix said today that Season 2 of Anne With an E will hit the streaming service July 6. It will be available to all subscribers worldwide outside Canada, where the CBC co-produced series bows in September.
The series, inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables books, created by Moira Walley-Beckett and produced by Miranda de Pencier’s Northwood Entertainment, was renewed for a second season in August. Its order for a second season was increased from eight to 10 episodes.
The coming-of-age story follows Anne (Amybeth McNulty), an outsider who, against all odds, fights for love, acceptance, and her place in the world. Season 2 adds new characters and continues to explore themes of identity, prejudice, feminism, bullying, gender parity and empowerment. Geraldine James, R.H. Thomson, Corrine Koslo, Dalila Bela, Aymeric Jett Montaz, Lucas Zumann and Kyla Matthews return for Season 2, along with newcomers Dalmar Abuzeid (Sebastian Lacroix) and Cory Grüter-Andrew...

“Stranger Things” and “Anne with an E” wouldn’t appear to have much in common. But both Netflix series boast iconic and impactful opening sequences created by the same design studio.
Imaginary Forces creative director Alan Williams, whose company earned lauds for its minimalist title design for “Stranger Things,” reached out to Netflix again when he learned that the streaming service was adapting the novel into a series, “Anne with an E.” Like many, Williams grew up captivated by Anne Shirley, the heroine from author Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book “Anne of Green Gables. The lonely orphan had an indomitable spirit, wild imagination, and affinity for the natural world that she brought with her to Green Gables, where she finally found a home.

While Netflix may boast the global representation of “Anne,” Canadians are already enjoying the series week-by-week on CBC. Then again, our friends up north treasure the character created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, with the 1985 miniseries starring Megan Follows deemed a Canadian classic. But these are modern times, and thus, a new take is required — from showrunners Moira Walley-Beckett (“Breaking Bad,” “Flesh and Bone’) and Miranda de Pencier (“Thanks For Sharing,” “Beginners”), no less.
