The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change with a new DC cinematic universe. But rather than start with a Justice League movie, a Superman movie, or even a Green Lantern TV show, the first project from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios is an adult animated series based on a 1980 team of monsters that are virtually as unknown as Rocket Raccoon and Groot were before “Guardians of the Galaxy.” And yet, “Creature Commandos” will set the stage for a new “Superman” movie, a new Justice League team, and a new DC canon. This Thursday on Max, DC Studios' Dcu begins with the animated Creature Commandos. The first two episodes will launch for fans, though critics have already watched all seven chapters of the show.

While the series marks something of a soft launch for the DC Universe, it will be our first glimpse at what James Gunn has planned for the franchise moving forward (the real test is still going to be next summer's Superman).

As we write this, Creature Commandos has a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 18 reviews; only one is negative and that opines, "If DC was going to drop the nihilistic and brutal aspects of DC’s previously shared continuity, that’s not happening here. If anything, Creature Commandos doubles down on the old grimdark Dceu vibe rather than forging a new path."

The nominees broadcast will take place on December 9 on CBS. Kaling and Chestnut will present the nominees for each of the 27 award categories.

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television are the two new awards categories that will be presented this year.

Other competitive categories include the film categories: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Motion Picture – Animated. TV categories include Best Television Series – Drama, Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and Best Television Limited Series.

All 27 categories of the 82nd Annual Golden Globes will be announced on CBSNews.com/GoldenGlobes and the CBS News Mobile App beginning at 8:15 a.m. Et/5:15 a.m. Pt. Ten categories will be simultaneously unveiled on “CBS Mornings” on CBS at 8:30 a.m. Et/5:30 a.m. Pt.

The Golden Globes also confirmed on Tuesday that the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award and the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television Award, both of which were introduced at the previous ceremony, will be handed out again. The fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) in Jeddah is set to once again put a spotlight on the burgeoning film industry in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East and beyond.

Showcasing a competition lineup of 15 titles, film festival circuit favourites, and more, it kicks off on Dec. 5 with an opening night gala screening of Karim Shenawi’s The Tale of Daye’s Family, the story of an 11-year-old albino, and close on Dec. 14 with Michael Gracey’s Robbie Williams biopic Better Man. Viola Davis is among the stars to be featured during the fest this year.

Ahead of the 2024 edition, Shivani Pandya Malhotra, managing director of the Red Sea Film Foundation, talked to THR about the state of the Saudi film industry, co-productions with other countries, growth opportunities and the role of stars at the festival.

Where do you feel we stand in terms of Saudi Arabian filmmaking and its success?...

James Gunn has always been a storyteller who gravitates toward outsiders. From the scrappy, irreverent heart of Guardians of the Galaxy to the gloomy, chaotic hallways of The Suicide Squad, his work feels like a love letter to the misfits—characters that are too strange, flawed, or deadly to fit cleanly into the environments they inhabit.

Gunn takes this attitude to a new level in Creature Commandos, which feels deeply personal and weirdly defiant. In an animated series about monsters struggling for their place in a morally bankrupt world, Gunn appears to ask: What does it mean to belong, and at what cost?

It is impossible to divorce Creature Commandos from its larger setting. As the first formal project in Gunn’s stint as co-head of DC Studios, it holds a lot of weight—not just for the new Dcu but also for Gunn himself, who is now an architect and artist.

As we reported a little earlier, the review embargo for Creature Commandos has lifted and critics have nothing but good things to say about DC Studios' first Dcu project (which arrives on Max later this week with its first two episodes).

The Max TV series has received widespread acclaim, resulting in a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While that score could change in the coming days as more verdicts are counted, this strong start means Creature Commandos has broken a huge DC record.

With 100%, it's the best-reviewed DC Comics adaptation ever, topping the likes of The Penguin (95%), The Dark Knight (94%), Superman: The Movie (93%), Peacemaker (93%), and The Suicide Squad (90%). DC Studios' documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, has 98%.

While Creature Commandos isn't quite as high-profile as next year's Superman reboot, this is precisely what DC Studios and James Gunn needed. Not only should it dispel some of the scepticism surrounding this...

Inaugurated in 2019, the award honors the lasting impact of career achievements in television. Danson is the fifth recipient, following Burnett, Norman Lear, Ryan Murphy and Ellen DeGeneres.

Created in 2019 and initially awarded to its namesake, the Carol Burnett Award is presented to an honoree who has made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen. Past recipients include Norman Lear, Ryan Murphy and Ellen DeGeneres.

It's no secret that, after Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. will appear in Superman and Peacemaker season 2.

Set photos have confirmed that he and A.R.G.U.S. are somehow tied to a character we believe is Ultraman, while we'd bet on him taking aim at Christopher Smith to avenge the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad. 

Talking to GamesRadar+, Grillo confirmed that Flag Sr. will "take over for [Amanda Waller]" as the leader of A.R.G.U.S.

"In Creature Commandos, I got the uniform," he told the site. "I got the yellow shirt and the hair, and, you know, he's really part of that world. And then in Superman and even more so in Peacemaker, I take over for Viola Davis in what she was the leader of A.R.G.U.S."

"So now I become almost an administrator," Grillo continued.

I know what you're thinking: "Creature Commandos" sounds an awful lot like a sequel to Gunn's "The Suicide Squad," and in some ways it is, especially when we scrutinize the narrative and thematic links between the two.

The Witcher star Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) will provide the voice for Circe in the upcoming animated Creature Commandos series, but DC Studios is said to have big plans for the formidable villain once she makes her live-action Dcu debut.

Chalotra is expected to step into the role on the big screen at some point, and scooper Daniel Richtman believes the character will have a significant part to play in the burgeoning cinematic universe going forward, with Creature Commandos laying the groundwork.

In the comics, Circe - like her Greek mythological counterpart - is a sorceress who was first introduced as a Wonder Woman foe. She is ruthless, cruel, and incredibly powerful, and it's not difficult to understand why she might well be utilized as the Dcu's first big bad.

“Waller” was announced in 2022 as a spinoff of “Peacemaker,” with Viola Davis starring again as Amanda Waller. Unlike “Peacemaker,” this show won’t be a comedy since Waller is a more serious character, and the tone will match that.

The show was originally set to release in 2024, but with James Gunn working on other Dcu projects, the release date is now unclear.

Since James Gunn hasn’t talked much about the show in recent interviews, many fans are questioning if it’s still being worked on. Thankfully, Gunn, who is very active on social media and often answers fan questions, confirmed that the show is in active development. However, that’s all the information he’s sharing for now.

It’s been a big weekend for the Washington family.

While patriarch Denzel Washington chewed the scenery on multiplex screens in “Gladiator II,” the next generation of Washingtons stormed onto streaming with the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winner “The Piano Lesson.” With the Netflix film, Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s kids — director Malcolm, actor John David and producer Katia — add to both their family mythos and Wilson’s legacy.

“We’re standing on the shoulders of the Wilsonians,” John David Washington told Variety at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Nov. 19, listing artists who’ve appeared in Wilson’s works on stage and screen, including his father, Viola Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Latanya Richardson Jackson, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Charles Dutton.

Creature Commandos will be our first taste of James Gunn and DC Studios' new Dcu. While the review embargo doesn't lift until December 2 (we'll share our verdict then), early word on the animated series is very positive.

Whether that will translate to all-important streaming viewership remains to be seen, though DC Studios is riding high after the success of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story and The Penguin. As a result, interest in the show appears high.

Now, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey has addressed the possibility of a second season. "Yeah, we absolutely want to do a second season," he told Screen Rant. "There's no particular five-season plan or anything like that. But we definitely want to do another season."
