Creature Commandos has just become James Gunn’s third consecutive critically acclaimed project for DC, but it’s his first creative output from his new Dcu slate as co-head of DC Studios. Technically speaking, it’s the fifth celebrated project in a row since he oversaw Matt Reeves’ DC Elseworlds’ HBO series The Penguin, as well as the Sundance acquisition of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. Gunn did not intend for his new animated series to launch the rebooted DC universe, but immediately following the ratings juggernaut that was Peacemaker season one, HBO Max, now Max, asked Gunn if he had another streaming series in him. He proceeded to write all seven episodes of Creature Commandos on spec, and just as he was dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s, he was hired by Warner Bros. Discovery to shepherd the entire universe alongside his longtime friend and producer,...

The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change with a new DC cinematic universe. But rather than start with a Justice League movie, a Superman movie, or even a Green Lantern TV show, the first project from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios is an adult animated series based on a 1980 team of monsters that are virtually as unknown as Rocket Raccoon and Groot were before “Guardians of the Galaxy.” And yet, “Creature Commandos” will set the stage for a new “Superman” movie, a new Justice League team, and a new DC canon. And Gunn has been working on it since before he was tapped to co-lead DC Studios.
“I think the move to the new canon made James look more carefully at some of the background characters and other details that he’d have to ensure could nicely dovetail with where he was going,...

This Thursday on Max, DC Studios' Dcu begins with the animated Creature Commandos. The first two episodes will launch for fans, though critics have already watched all seven chapters of the show.
While the series marks something of a soft launch for the DC Universe, it will be our first glimpse at what James Gunn has planned for the franchise moving forward (the real test is still going to be next summer's Superman).
As we write this, Creature Commandos has a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 18 reviews; only one is negative and that opines, "If DC was going to drop the nihilistic and brutal aspects of DC’s previously shared continuity, that’s not happening here. If anything, Creature Commandos doubles down on the old grimdark Dceu vibe rather than forging a new path."
The Dcu being compared to the Dceu is likely the last thing DC Studios wants but...

James Gunn has always been a storyteller who gravitates toward outsiders. From the scrappy, irreverent heart of Guardians of the Galaxy to the gloomy, chaotic hallways of The Suicide Squad, his work feels like a love letter to the misfits—characters that are too strange, flawed, or deadly to fit cleanly into the environments they inhabit.
Gunn takes this attitude to a new level in Creature Commandos, which feels deeply personal and weirdly defiant. In an animated series about monsters struggling for their place in a morally bankrupt world, Gunn appears to ask: What does it mean to belong, and at what cost?
It is impossible to divorce Creature Commandos from its larger setting. As the first formal project in Gunn’s stint as co-head of DC Studios, it holds a lot of weight—not just for the new Dcu but also for Gunn himself, who is now an architect and artist.

As we reported a little earlier, the review embargo for Creature Commandos has lifted and critics have nothing but good things to say about DC Studios' first Dcu project (which arrives on Max later this week with its first two episodes).
The Max TV series has received widespread acclaim, resulting in a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While that score could change in the coming days as more verdicts are counted, this strong start means Creature Commandos has broken a huge DC record.
With 100%, it's the best-reviewed DC Comics adaptation ever, topping the likes of The Penguin (95%), The Dark Knight (94%), Superman: The Movie (93%), Peacemaker (93%), and The Suicide Squad (90%). DC Studios' documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, has 98%.
While Creature Commandos isn't quite as high-profile as next year's Superman reboot, this is precisely what DC Studios and James Gunn needed. Not only should it dispel some of the scepticism surrounding this...

Superman may be the most anticipated and talked about upcoming entry in the newly titled DC Universe (or Dcu), but Creature Commandos will be the first official entry under the leadership of James Gunn. The seven episode animated series is set to air its first two episodes on December 5, with the remaining five episodes releasing once a week following that. I had the chance to see all seven episodes early, and this review pertains to the series in its entirety.
The Plot
Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles another ragtag team of unwitting and unwilling soldiers to act as her own personal army. With new regulations in place forbidding the use of humans in such practices, Waller relies on a team of monsters to act as a loophole. Led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), the collection of clashing personalities and egos are sent to protect a princess and must eventually...

Plot: Set two years after the events of The Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos focuses on a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. With Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) as their puppetmaster, a ragtag group of monsters led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) travel to a foreign kingdom to protect Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova) before learning there’s more at stake than the lives of her subjects.

Creature Commandos is very nearly upon us and the animated Max series promises to give comic book fans their first taste of DC Studios' new Dcu.
We'll be sharing our review of the series tomorrow, but in the meantime, the first clip from the show has been released. In that, Rick Flag Sr. takes the members of Task Force M on their first mission, with the dysfunction between them on full display.
G.I. Robot just wants to kill Nazis, while everyone else...well, they don't want to be there. As for Weasel, he's not enjoying his helicopter ride and that leads to Flag referencing the events of The Suicide Squad and the monster's previous visit to Corto Maltese alongside Task Force X (which saw him nearly drown).
Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey was recently asked how this series differs from his previous DC work.

Frank Grillo has been hinted as an important figure in the DC Universe since being cast as Rick Flag Sr. So far, the character is set to appear in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2.
Grillo recently shared that he’ll take on a role similar to Nick Fury in the Dcu, becoming the new leader of A.R.G.U.S., a position currently held by Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis).
In a recent interview, Grillo explained more about his role and how the leadership change will happen. In Creature Commandos, he’s fully involved in the action, wearing the classic yellow shirt and being part of that world. But in Superman and especially Peacemaker, his character transitions into a leadership role, taking over from Waller as the head of A.R.G.U.S.

Frank Grillo Opens Up About Leading A.R.G.U.S. and Confirms ‘Peacemaker’ Will Be ‘All About Revenge’
Frank Grillo has been teased as a vital character in the Dcu pretty much ever since he was confirmed as Rick Flag. Sr. The character is so far slated to appear in ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Superman,’ and ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2.
Recently, Grillo revealed that he will be the equivalent of Nick Fury in the Dcu and that he will assume the position of A.R.G.U.S. leader, a title that Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) currently holds.
In his most recent interview, Grillo revealed some details regarding her s status and how this exchange of power is going to take place. In ‘Creature Commandos,’ he’s fully immersed in the action, wearing the iconic yellow shirt and being part of that world. However, in ‘Superman’ and especially ‘Peacemaker,’ his character shifts roles, taking over from Viola Davis as the leader of A.R.G.U.S.

Meryl Streep is considered one of the finest actresses of all time, having 21 Academy Award nominations and three wins to her name. It's no secret that, after Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. will appear in Superman and Peacemaker season 2.
Set photos have confirmed that he and A.R.G.U.S. are somehow tied to a character we believe is Ultraman, while we'd bet on him taking aim at Christopher Smith to avenge the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad.
Talking to GamesRadar+, Grillo confirmed that Flag Sr. will "take over for [Amanda Waller]" as the leader of A.R.G.U.S.
"In Creature Commandos, I got the uniform," he told the site. "I got the yellow shirt and the hair, and, you know, he's really part of that world. And then in Superman and even more so in Peacemaker, I take over for Viola Davis in what she was the leader of A.R.G.U.S."
"So now I become almost an administrator," Grillo continued.

Now that we’ve made it through Thanksgiving, we are welcoming the colder winter months and all the exciting TV shows that come with it.
And though there’s plenty of holiday offerings to enjoy in December. Streamers, networks and streamers have plenty of other big new and returning shows to keep us busy before the arrival of spring. Genre TV will deliver in spades with the premieres of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” on Disney+ and “Creature Commandos” on Max. “Squid Game,” the most-watched Netflix show ever, finally returns for its anticipated second season right after Christmas; and “The Rookie” Season 7 headlines a packed broadcast schedule kicking off in January, while “The White Lotus” makes its long-awaited return. Then new series like “Doc” on Fox, “On Call” on Prime Video and Max’s “The Pitt” are a few of the new shows vying for our attention.

James Gunn and Peter Safran's brand-new DC Universe (Dcu) is set to kick off soon with "Creature Commandos," which will premiere December 5, 2024, on Max. And how does this project aim to set the tone for DC's freshly rebooted super-powered adventures to come? Well, by returning to what's proven to be a winning formula for Gunn in the past: a story about a band of misfits who, despite their differences, learn to peel back the layers of their identities while evolving as a united front. Yes, this seven-episode animated series revolves around the titular group of oddball super-powered individuals from the world of DC Comics and takes place right after the events of the first season of "Peacemaker." I know what you're thinking: "Creature Commandos" sounds an awful lot like a sequel to Gunn's "The Suicide Squad," and in some ways it is, especially when we scrutinize the narrative and thematic links between the two.

The Witcher star Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) will provide the voice for Circe in the upcoming animated Creature Commandos series, but DC Studios is said to have big plans for the formidable villain once she makes her live-action Dcu debut.
Chalotra is expected to step into the role on the big screen at some point, and scooper Daniel Richtman believes the character will have a significant part to play in the burgeoning cinematic universe going forward, with Creature Commandos laying the groundwork.
In the comics, Circe - like her Greek mythological counterpart - is a sorceress who was first introduced as a Wonder Woman foe. She is ruthless, cruel, and incredibly powerful, and it's not difficult to understand why she might well be utilized as the Dcu's first big bad.
You can see Circe in action in a new 30-second promo for Creature Commandos at the link below.

In just a few days, Creature Commandos will be released, marking the official start of James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s Dcu.
The series follows a black ops team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller. James Gunn wrote all seven episodes, with Dean Lorey as the showrunner and Yves “Balak” Bigerel as the supervising director.
The cast features Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoë Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis.
After the first season of Peacemaker, Amanda Waller can no longer risk human lives for her secret missions like she did with the Suicide Squad and Team Peacemaker. So, she creates a black ops team of monsters called the Creature Commandos, led by General Rick Flag Sr.

Jared Leto’s Live Rat Prank On Margot Robbie (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Yep, you heard it right. Jared Leto gave Margot Robbie a rat on the Suicide Squad set. Viola Davis, who played Amanda Waller, dropped the bomb on this bizarre prank years later. It’s just another wild chapter in Leto’s already infamous Joker journey.
When Leto took on the role of the Joker in Suicide Squad back in 2016, fans and critics were split. His “gangsta Joker” look was bold, but his Method acting made headlines. Leto went all-in with the role, sending creepy gifts to his co-stars and, the most infamous of all? A live rat to Margot Robbie, aka Harley Quinn. Despite Leto denying it, the story stuck—and now Davis has confirmed it.

The Cecil B. DeMille Award is an annual prize given at the Golden Globes for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” The Hollywood Foreign Press Association selects its recipients from a wide variety of actors, directors, writers and producers.
The award is named for legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, who was its very first recipient in 1952. Only twice since 1952 has the award not been given: once in 1976 and again in 2008. The 2008 omission was due to the Writer’s Guild strike which forced the HFPA to cancel its annual telecast. That year’s recipient, Steven Spielberg, was deferred to the 2009 ceremony.
Tour through our photo gallery to see a history of every recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, including the 2025 recipient Viola Davis, plus previous honorees Eddie Murphy, Jane Fonda, Tom Hanks, Jeff Bridges, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, George Clooney and more.

If your thirst for non-stop action isn’t sated by the bloodletting in “Gladiator II,” take a gander at previous epics like “Spartacus” and “Ben-Hur,” which both heavily influenced the original “Gladiator.”
We’ve also thrown in some cinematic suggestions that go beyond Ancient Rome, with sprawling battles in West Africa, Persia, Spain, Japan and Norway, and confrontations that don’t necessarily involve a sword and shield.
Behold some great, epic action movies like “Gladiator II” to watch next.
(Universal Pictures) Gladiator (2000)
The Oscar-winning Ridley Scott epic is obviously the template for the new sequel, but if for some reason you haven’t seen Russell Crowe’s Maximus (almost) single-handedly upending the Roman Empire, you should remedy that with due speed. The film, which won five Oscars, including one for Crowe as Best Actor, is always worth revisiting, especially in light of the many callbacks in the new film. Strength and honor!

“Waller” was announced in 2022 as a spinoff of “Peacemaker,” with Viola Davis starring again as Amanda Waller. Unlike “Peacemaker,” this show won’t be a comedy since Waller is a more serious character, and the tone will match that.
The show was originally set to release in 2024, but with James Gunn working on other Dcu projects, the release date is now unclear.
Since James Gunn hasn’t talked much about the show in recent interviews, many fans are questioning if it’s still being worked on. Thankfully, Gunn, who is very active on social media and often answers fan questions, confirmed that the show is in active development. However, that’s all the information he’s sharing for now.
Understandable if you can’t currently say but is Waller still in active development as it hasn’t been mentioned in recent interviews when talking about upcoming projects.

“Waller” was announced in 2022 as a spinoff of “Peacemaker,” with Viola Davis returning as the main character. Unlike “Peacemaker,” this show won’t be a comedy because Amanda Waller is a much more serious character, and the tone will reflect that.
The show was initially planned for release in 2024, but with James Gunn now focused on other Dcu projects, the show’s release date remains uncertain.
Considering that Gunn also hasn’t mentioned the show all that much in his latest interviews, plenty of fans are wondering if the show is in active development at all. Luckily, James Gunn who is really active on social media and answers fan inquiries regularly confirmed that yes, the show is in active development, but that is as many details as you will get from the director.

It’s been a big weekend for the Washington family.
While patriarch Denzel Washington chewed the scenery on multiplex screens in “Gladiator II,” the next generation of Washingtons stormed onto streaming with the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winner “The Piano Lesson.” With the Netflix film, Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s kids — director Malcolm, actor John David and producer Katia — add to both their family mythos and Wilson’s legacy.
“We’re standing on the shoulders of the Wilsonians,” John David Washington told Variety at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Nov. 19, listing artists who’ve appeared in Wilson’s works on stage and screen, including his father, Viola Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Latanya Richardson Jackson, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Charles Dutton.
“They showed us how to do it,” he said. “Hopefully the younger generation will be inspired by what’s possible with these words.”

Creature Commandos will be our first taste of James Gunn and DC Studios' new Dcu. While the review embargo doesn't lift until December 2 (we'll share our verdict then), early word on the animated series is very positive.
Whether that will translate to all-important streaming viewership remains to be seen, though DC Studios is riding high after the success of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story and The Penguin. As a result, interest in the show appears high.
Now, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey has addressed the possibility of a second season. "Yeah, we absolutely want to do a second season," he told Screen Rant. "There's no particular five-season plan or anything like that. But we definitely want to do another season."
"You will see, at the end of the first season, some of the characters that might be part of that, and there's a lot of fun to come, I hope.

When Viola Davis Advocated For Equal Pay (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Viola Davis has never been one to back down. She made it clear regarding equal pay: you pay me what I’m worth during a candid chat with Tina Brown at the Women in the World salon; the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony-winning powerhouse didn’t hold back. She spilled the harsh truth about the pay disparity in Hollywood, especially for women of color. And she didn’t mince words.
“We won’t talk about gender inequality of pay,” Davis said. “Because… what [some women] are getting paid, which is half of what a man is getting paid…well, we get probably a tenth of what a Caucasian woman gets.” Yeah, she said a tenth. And mind you, this comes from a star who’s often top-billing. Despite her decades of experience across film, TV, and theater, she’s still had to hustle—hard.
