I love Stanley Kubrick‘s classic Stephen King adaptation The Shining (watch it Here) and would probably have a blast watching the movie at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon – which is the place that stood in for the Overlook Hotel in the exterior shots of the location. (The interior scenes were filmed on sets in England.) Chances are, I’m not going to be able to do that any time soon, but some fans are going to have that opportunity later this year! On Set Cinema has announced that they will be showing The Shining at the Timberline Lodge on Sunday, October 6th! The event details can be found at This Link and tickets can be purchased Here.

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we revisit the high water mark for one-location thrillers: the central siege in John Carpenter's 1976 classic "Assault on Precinct 13.")
There's a hypothetical version of "Assault on Precinct 13" out there that does away with the restraint and foreboding atmosphere of the original, recklessly tossed out in favor of high-wire thrills and a never-ending collection of narrative tropes. In place of a handful of straightforward (yet effective) archetypes thrown together as strangers but who come out as something else altogether after the crucible of one endlessly violent night, someone might've had the inclination to try and "humanize" these characters by burdening them with edgy backstories or an overcomplicated plot. In essence, imagine stripping away all the idiosyncrasy and personality just to end up with another generic action/thriller.

"I've got three shots – that's enough!" "Can't argue with a confident man." Newly restored in 4K, Assault on Precinct 13 is back on the big screen—loud, beautiful, and inescapable, as it was always meant to be seen. The American Genre Film Archive (Agfa), the largest non-profit genre film archive and distributor in the world, has released a brand new trailer for the 4K re-release of Carpenter's 1976 action classic. This brutally violent, gritty film from the 1970s was made before Carpenter went on to direct Halloween, Escape from New York, The Thing, and everything else. Screw the 2005 remake (don't watch it) this is the real shit. A Highway Patrol Officer, two criminals and a station secretary defend a defunct Los Angeles precinct office against a siege by a bloodthirsty street gang. Starring Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, Laurie Zimmer, Martin West, and Tony Burton. Growing up, I remember watching this because my...

Earlier this month, a 4K restoration of director John Carpenter‘s 1976 action thriller classic Assault on Precinct 13 played at the Globe Cinema in Calgary for three days. Now the 4K restoration is set to reach more theatres across the U.S. and Canada, rolling out over the next two months! The American Genre Film Archive is responsible for this 4K theatrical re-release, and the company’s theatrical director Bret Berg had this to say about it: “It’s an honor to represent Carpenter’s legacy, given how much personal joy his work has created for us. When it’s something as iconic as Precinct 13 – akin to the heartstopping majesty of Halloween – we’re driven to get this taut masterwork in front of as many audiences as we can. Big thanks to the Ckk Corporation for shepherding this new restoration.”

There are generally two main schools of thought on "Rocky IV:" You can bemoan how ridiculous the franchise had become since the grittiness of the Oscar-winning original film, or celebrate it for finally shrugging off all semblance of reality to become such a glorious example of '80s excess. I say life is too short for the former and, while it is the most thinly plotted of the series to that point, I still love "Rocky IV" for the bombastic sports cartoon that it is.
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is no longer just the lovable slugger from Philly; now he is a boxing superhero whose powers are an indestructible head and indefatigable spirit, a man so full of good intentions that he can even win the hearts of those stony-faced Russians in the death throes of the Cold War. That is where we end up in "Rocky IV." Having...

Sylvester Stallone Nearly Died in ‘Rocky IV’ Fight: Dolph Lundgren ‘Pulverized’ and Hospitalized Him
Sylvester Stallone marked the release of his “Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago” director’s cut with a behind-the-scenes documentary released on his YouTube channel. The video is stirring up buzz for Stallone’s revelation that he nearly died filming an iconic fight scene opposite Dolph Lundgren. The fight resulted in Stallone being hospitalized for four days before he could return to set and continue filming the fight scene. Lundgren’s punch that landed Stallone in the hospital made it into the final cut of the film.
“The first thing we shot [was] my entrance, [Lundgren’s] entrance, and the introductions and then I got really injured during the fight and I had to be flown into intensive care to California from Canada,” Stallone said. “[Lundgren] pulverized me. And I didn’t feel it in the moment but later that night my heart started to swell. My blood pressure went up to 260 and I was...

"I gotta take everything he's got." MGM Studios has debuted a new trailer for the recut special edition of Rocky IV, which will be playing on the big screen for one-night-only this November. This new version is officially called Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago - The Ultimate Director's Cut, and it was updated by Stallone himself. He also wrote & directed & starred in the original 1985 film, which sees Rocky battling the brutal Soviet fighter Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren. Stallone has added 40 minutes of never-before-seen footage to the film originally made at the very end of the Cold War. The cast also includes Brigitte Nielsen, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Michael Pataki, Talia Shire, Stu Nahan, and Tony Burton. We're not entirely sure what is in the extra 40 minutes of footage, but it's likely more footage of training and the fights. There is also some renewed interest in this Rocky because it's...

In 1985, a plucky underdog from the “City of Brotherly Love” helped ease Cold War tensions with his gutsy triumph over a Soviet slugger and his passionate reminder that “everybody can change.” That ringside speech, of course, was the dramatic culmination of “Rocky IV,” one of the biggest hits of that year and critical component of the Sylvester Stallone canon. There were come-from-behind-victories, dramatic montages, and that stirring theme music, courtesy of Bill Conti — all the things that made the franchise so great. But fans of the Rocky saga might be forgiven for wondering, what got left on the cutting room floor?
Well, wonder no longer. “Rocky V. Drago: The Ultimate Director’s Cut” will deliver 40 more minutes of never-before-seen footage. The film, which Stallone directed as well as starred in, will be available for a one-night only engagement in theaters on Nov. 11. Richard Donner’s first feature post- Superman is a complete switcheroo — a small-scale character piece that delivers an impressive lineup of engaging actors. John Savage leads a ‘different’ ensemble of the walking wounded, that congregates at a neighborhood bar. Are friends the best therapy? The movie has a positive sports theme, and the way its characters overcome physical limits and psychological damage feels uplifting, never phony. Diana Scarwid earned an Oscar nomination, and the unappreciated Amy Wright is a heartbreaker in a strong, uncompromised role.

In 2015, Ryan Coogler’s Creed came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest box office surprises of the year after taking a tired Rocky franchise and turning it into something fresh, original and highly lucrative. Coogler did this by managing to stay true to the essence of the original films and by adding his own twist on a much-loved story.
Relinquishing his directorial duties in Creed II in favour of writing and producing, Coogler has handed the baton to newcomer Steven Caple Jr in this impressive sequel which sees Michael B Jordan back as boxer Adonis Creed (son of Apollo Creed) and Sylvester Stallone as the iconic Rocky Balboa and Creed’s boxing coach.
After a triumphant win which sees him crowned world champion and with his singer girlfriend Bianca (Tessa Thompson) expecting their first child, Adonis Creed seems to be finally on his way to achieving everything he’s ever dreamt of.

Even after the baton has been passed, and a new hero has laid just claim to our allegiance, the uniquely enduring Rocky legend continues.
More than four decades ago, “Rocky” appeared, seemingly from out of nowhere, to introduce relatively-unknown Sylvester Stallone (who also wrote the screenplay) as Philadelphia club fighter Rocky Balboa (aka The Italian Stallion), a battered but proud palooka who’s inspired by shy sweetheart Adrian Pennino (Talia Shire), her boozy brother Paulie (Burt Young), and crusty trainer/manager Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith) to take his best shot in an improbable matchup with heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). This week, Rocky returns as supportive mentor to the new champ, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), in “Creed II,” the latest entry in what now stands as an eight-film franchise. Here are all the films in the franchise ranked from worst to best.

How in the world did we get two spinoffs out of “Rocky IV”? Granted, it’s not the most pressing question on your mind as you watch the agreeably paint-by-numbers “Creed II,” the inevitable sequel to Ryan Coogler’s 2015 hit. “Creed” reignited the “Rocky” franchise with the story of the late Apollo Creed’s outside-of-marriage son Adonis, played by Michael B. Jordan as a brooding young man contending with the legacy of a champion he never knew.
But it is a bit of a head-scratcher that the worst entry in Sylvester Stallone’s initial series — in which Rocky Balboa’s fight against Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) was really jingoistic America versus a cartoon Soviet Union, which was really aging action star versus bulked-up newcomer, but which was Really Stallone’s terrible direction pummeling the crap out of Eisenstein’s theory of montage — also sowed the seeds for its newfound appreciation and reworked survival.

When police sergeant Ethan Bishop (Austin) is given the job of holding the fort at a closing La precinct office on New Year’s Eve he hopes the night will go smoothly. When a man turns up in shock, chased by a group of gang members though, it seems things will hardly go smoothly.

Actor Tony Burton, who is perhaps best known for his role as Duke in the Rocky series has passed away, TheWrap is reporting. The actor was 78 years old.
Apart from the character of Paulie, Duke was one of those characters who managed to find his way into each of the original six Rocky films, first as Apollo Creed's trainer, and then as Rocky's.
Check out one of my favorite scenes for the character from 2005's Rocky Balboa.
There has been no comment on what Burton passed away from, but regardless, Hollywood has lost a great talent. May he rest in peace.

Tony Burton was never the star of any of the Rocky films. He didn't get nominated for awards, didn't appear on the posters, and his character, Apollo Creed corner man Tony "Duke" Evers, wasn't even the most famous trainer of the series. (That would be either Burgess Meredith's Mickey, or, if we're counting Creed, Rocky himself.) But what Burton, who has died at the age of 78, gave the franchise was simple: Great, chill-inducing speeches, time after time after time. Sometimes, they could be quiet yet forceful, like his failed attempt to talk Apollo out of a Balboa rematch in Rocky II: or his pep talk to Rocky as the two men prepared to avenge Apollo's death at the hands of Ivan Drago: But when Burton had to crank up the volume, like Duke's adrenalized response to Rocky finally cutting the big Russian, holy cow: And then, of course,...

It’s always sad when an actor we spent a lot of time with passes away. Often, it’s the big movie stars that we remember most. But sometimes, it’s the character actors in the background, who were always there, that we find ourselves missing when they’re gone. Tony Burton played the role of Duke through the first six movies about Rocky Balboa. He died yesterday at the age of 78. Tony Burton is credited with nearly 90 film roles dating back to 1974 but he’s probably best known for his role as the friend and trainer of Apollo Creed, Duke Evers, starting with the first Rocky film in 1976 and running all the way until Rocky Balboa in 2006. Burton retired from acting shortly after. A native of Flint, Michigan, his death was reported by mlive.com. While Burton had apparently been in failing health for ...

On March 24th, 1975, struggling actor Sylvester Stallone spent his last few dollars to see boxing champ Muhammad Ali fight Chuck Wepner. Thought to be an easy win, Ali surprisingly met his match: a career brawler who was having the fight of his life. Fifteen rounds and an Ali knockdown later, Wepner lost. But the scrappy no name fighter inspired Stallone, who emerged from a twenty-hour writing binge with a screenplay and an underdog character named Rocky Balboa.
The script quickly became a hot property in Hollywood, and several attempts were made to purchase it for stars like Burt Reynolds and Ryan O’Neal. But Stallone refused, knowing full well that no one could play the part like he could. Stallone eventually got his wish at United Artists, and under director John G. Avildsen, the rest became movie history. Released in 1976, Rocky was a global sensation, winning a Best Picture Oscar...

Deputy District Attorney and prosecutor Bobby Grace's contention that Berry killed Dolla (real name: Roderick Anthony Burton II) as an act of vengeance was rejected by jurors.
Upon the reading of the verdict, Berry hugged his attorney while Burton's mother, Dayne Robinson, reportedly sobbed: "Oh, please, somebody help me."
