Usually, the back-from-the-dead homecoming of a story’s hero is the stuff of triumphant season finales. But even though an alive-and-well Jamie Fraser burst back into the action in last week’s Outlander, we’re a long way off from a happy ending.

Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame is lauding Downton Abbey as a landmark piece of British television.
The executive spoke at Content London on Thursday alongside a panel of Universal International Studio bosses Beatrice Springborn and Margaret Schatzel, as well as Nigel Marchant, managing director at Carnival Films, to discuss their latest major shows and the direction they’re heading in after NBCUniversal’s acquisition of the production company in 2008.
Neame, Springborn, Schatzel and Marchant spoke extensively about the success of Sky and Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal, the upcoming Colin Firth-led show Lockerbie and Sarah Snook’s All Her Fault.
But first, the four reflected on the example set by the English period drama Downton Abbey starring Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Dan Stevens.

The Agency has scored a quick Season 2 renewal at Showtime after a monster debut weekend.
The first two episodes of the espionage thriller have racked up 5.1M global “viewers” on streaming and linear since premiering on November 29. Paramount Global says it’s Showtime’s most-streamed new series in history, though streaming-specific numbers weren’t available.
(While Paramount is touting viewers, it’s important to note that, on Paramount+, the company can’t determine how many people are watching via a single stream, or if anyone is actually watching at all. This likely means that Paramount is using “active sub households” as a proxy for streaming viewers.)

Hit U.K. crime drama “The Jetty” is finally making its way across the pond. As the result of some unique dealmaking by BBC Studios, “The Jetty” will be shared by two platforms — BritBox and Hulu — as it launches in the U.S. on Dec. 13.
BBC Studios holds global distribution rights on ‘The Jetty,” which premiered on BBC One and streamed on BBC iPlayer in July. The four episode series, from showrunner Cat Jones, stars Jenna Coleman as Detective Ember Manning, whose investigation into an abused teenager sets her onto a cold case relating to another missing teen, Amy Knightly, who disappeared some decades earlier. It’s a case Ember soon realizes she has an intimate connection to.

Agreeing to star in “The Agency” was an easy yes for Richard Gere given the star was already a fan of the espionage drama’s source material. But differentiating this Paramount+ with Showtime original from the French “The Bureau” was entirely different matter.
“It looked like a movie. It was long-form version of movie storytelling with very rich and complicated characters,” Gere told TheWrap when asked why he enjoyed “The Bureau.” The Canal+ espionage thriller originally ran from 2015 to 2020 and focused on what Gere described as “post-colonial Earth and what culture has done to culture.”
“[‘The Agency’] is dealing with the present since then, and certainly from the American point of view. It’s dealing with the former Soviet Union. It’s dealing with Putin. It’s dealing with Ukraine. It’s dealing with Africa, the Middle East. It’s it’s all that stuff that’s in our world...

Sony has moved back the US release of Paddington In Peru from January 17 to February 14, 2025, pitching Studiocanal’s family film against Captain America: Brave New World.
While opening on the same day as a Marvel Studios release sounds daunting, it is likely Sony executives were more eager to avoid clashing with holdover business from Wicked, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, and Mufasa: The Lion King.

Paddington in Peru was released in the UK earlier this month, with a US release set for the new year. However, fans will have to wait a little longer as Sony Pictures has pushed the release back by a month.
The film was set to hit US theaters on January 17, 2025, but will now debut on February 14, 2025. The Paddington sequel has given StudioCanal its biggest-ever opening with a 3-day total of £9.65 million. The first film opened to £5.1 million, and the sequel grossed £8.2 million in its debut. Seems that audiences can’t get enough of that marmalade-loving bastard. While the reactions to the sequel weren’t nearly as glowing as the first two films (which are damn-near perfect), there’s still a lot of fun to be had. StudioCanal is already developing Paddington 4 as well as a new TV series.
Paddington in Peru “follows Paddington and the Brown family as they visit Aunt Lucy in Peru.

U.S. audiences will have to wait a little longer to get their Paddington fix, as the successful film franchise’s third installment “Paddington in Peru” shifts from a Jan. 2025 release to Valentine’s Day.
The Columbia Pictures film’s domestic release has moved from Jan. 17 to Feb. 14, now coinciding with both Presidents’ Day & Valentine’s Day weekend. The shift positions the family film on a double holiday weekend, with a large percentage of K-12 students out of school Friday-Monday.
“Paddington 3” debuted in the U.K. earlier this month and scored a record-breaking opening weekend, collecting £9.65 million ($12.4 million) — the biggest opening for a British film since 2021’s “No Time to Die.”

On the Wednesday, November 20 episode of The Today Show, Richard Gere promoted The Agency, his new spy thriller.
Today played a clip from the 10-episode series, which is a Paramount+ and Showtime project.
The video helped set up Gere’s whole segment. But the clip also cut off right before Gere’s character flipped his middle finger — showing the actor making the gesture in the studio instead.
Though Today show drama pales beside reports from GMA behind the scenes, the NBC news program has its moments.

The Paddington films have always been about learning to feel at home. In the first film, Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) adapts to life in London while his adoptive family, the Browns, figure out how to integrate the bear into their household. And in the second film, Paddington even turns a prison into a kind of domestic paradise using nothing but good manners and some fine marmalade. Now, Paddington in Peru presents the series with its biggest challenge, catapulting its characters to the other side of the planet as Dougal Wilson, making his feature directorial debut, takes over from Paul King. And yet, in spite of all these changes, the series has never felt more at home in its own furry skin than it does here.
The film begins with the exciting arrival of Paddington’s first British passport. But the young bear has barely had time to celebrate this...

"It's a real village... making Paddington. And bringing it all together is this lovingly hand-crafted film you get to see." The first "Paddington" movie arrived with low expectations, first after Colin Firth departed the titular role, and later when the first trailers threatened a "Sonic the Hedgehog" level CGI monstrosity. And yet, that movie won audiences over, before director Paul King delivered a sequel that is a perfect movie by every metric as subjective as a Rotten Tomatoes score, or as objective as the word of Nicolas Cage.
Unfortunately, it seems that when King decided to make "Wonka" instead of another "Paddington" movie, he took all the magic with him, leaving only a "story by" credit for newcomer Dougal Wilson (in his feature directorial debut) and his cohort of writers to pick up. Wilson's task of following a masterpiece despite the loss of the original creator and one of the main stars of the film, was impossible. Sadly, the result is the "worst" of the three movies so far, a...

A little bear goes a long way, especially at the U.K. box office, where “Paddington in Peru” has scored a record-breaking opening weekend.
The third installment in the beloved Paddington Bear franchise proved that the seven-year wait from the second didn’t matter, becoming the biggest opening of the three to date.
The three-day result of £9.65 million ($12.4) was also the biggest opening of the year for the British-produced film, and the biggest since “No Time to Die” in 2021. For StudioCanal, which financed the feature (its most expensive investment in a film to date), it also marked the company’s biggest opening in the U.K. of all time. Not bad for a plucky CGI bear with a penchant for marmalade sandwiches.
By contrast, the first “Paddington” feature opened to £5.1 million in 2014, while the 2017 sequel earned £8.2 million. The two would go on to earn in excess of $600 million globally, creating...

Paddington in Peru charmed UK & Ireland audiences this weekend with the biggest opening of the year for a British-produced movie, and the best since 2021’s No Time to Die. The 2014 original opened to £5.1M, and the 2017 sequel did £8.2M in its debut. Combined, the previous two films grossed $600M worldwide.
The No. 1 debut for the Dougal Wilson-directed threequel drew an audience of an estimated 1.2M across the UK & Ireland since releasing on Friday.

Hugh Bonneville has said making ‘Paddington in Peru’ “felt very different” thanks to the new director Dougal Wilson. The 53-year-old filmmaker took over the franchise from Paul King for the upcoming movie, and while the experience of making a new ‘Paddington’ film was not the same as before due to the new director, the ‘Downton Abbey’ star, 60, insisted Wilson was able to incorporate some “gloriously fresh” ideas into the series while remaining faithful to what had come before . During an interview with Digital Spy, Bonneville said: “It felt very different, particularly with Dougal's nerves bless him because he said, 'How am I ever going to match what Paul created', but he has.“He's not only stepped into those very big shoes but he's filled them beautifully and added his own flavours and tone. There are lots of bad movies in the world. A lot of mediocre movies as well. And quite a few good-to-great ones. But there’s only one “Paddington 2,” which is literally one of the best-reviewed motion pictures in history. While not everybody thinks “Paddington 2” is one of the best movies ever made, per se, quite a lot of people kinda do. And even the ones who don’t have largely come to the conclusion that it’s sweet and fun.
Ordinarily, the idea of making a sequel to one of the best movies ever made would be a little anxiety-inducing, since how could lightning possibly strike twice? But “Paddington 2” is “Paddington 2.” There’s literally a “2” in the title. This “Peru” adventure is a sequel to a great movie that people not only liked more than the original, but is now one of the most celebrated movies of all-time.

The lovable bear is back. Paddington in Peru has the task of following two movies that had near-perfect positive reactions. Plus, the original director, Paul King, sits this one out. So, now that the film has been screened in the U.K., reactions are hitting social media. How is it faring this time around? Paddington in Peru “follows Paddington and the Brown family as they visit Aunt Lucy in Peru. A thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and to the mountain peaks of Peru.” Ben Whishaw returns to voice Paddington, with Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, and Imelda Staunton rounding out the cast.

The bar for the bear has been raised awfully high. A decade ago, the polite, Peruvian furball with a hankering for fruit preserves stormed the box office — and our hearts — with his first cinematic outing. Then Paddington 2 proved to be The Godfather Part II of adorable comedies, enhancing pretty much every aspect of the original and even proving a bonding experience for Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent. Keeping that triumphant roll going was always going to be a tough order. And so it proves — while this threequel provides laughs and charm and two new A-list bad’uns, there’s something intangible missing. The marmalade has lost a bit of its zest.
One issue is that Paddington is no longer out of his element. The marma-lad has left London before, in creator Michael Bond’s books — in 1961’s Paddington Abroad, he headed across the Channel,...

Olivia Colman plays a singing nun. I’m almost prepared to say that’s all you need to know about Paddington in Peru: that Olivia Colman, living English treasure, gets her Julie Andrews on and leads a song-and-dance sequence on an alpine meadow that tells us that the hills are still very much alive. It’s not much of a spoiler to say that her Reverend Mother proves to be something less than exemplary in the deadly sins department, at least the ones that involve lying. That’s the best bit, in fact: the singing nun in the naughty corner.
Paddington in Peru is the third film to adapt Michael Bond’s iconic children’s stories. All of it is fine, actually, not just Colman’s homage to the Von Trapps. Directing duties have passed from Paul King to Dougal Wilson, who may not have King’s Midas touch with physical comedy,...

Paddington, the duffel-coated bear with a penchant for marmalade and mishaps, was already a cultural institution of nearly 60 years’ standing by the time he headlined his first feature film a decade ago. The success of Paul King’s “Paddington” and “Paddington 2,” however, promoted the diminutive children’s-book hero to the status of national treasure: a warm and fuzzy global mascot for British pluck and politeness, to the point that he was drafted in for a sketch with the late Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate her platinum jubilee in 2022. The films are lovely, funny and just a little odd; the associated branding has since edged into a patriotic tweeness that’s less endearing. So on the face of it, it’s a good idea for Paddington’s third screen outing, “Paddington in Peru,” to get him out of Blighty for a while, and back to his Latin roots.

Aunt Lucy has disappeared into the Amazon and Paddington is on the case in his third cinematic outing. Here’s our Paddington In Peru review.
There’s a lot of expectation heading into the third film of a trilogy, which might explain why StudioCanal have already made it very clear that’s not what Paddington In Peru is. With a fourth film (and a TV series) given the green light, the pressure on Dougal Wilson’s first go in the director’s chair to deliver a Toy Story 3 or Return Of The King is reduced somewhat.
In hindsight, that might be a good thing. If watching Paddington 2 offered an emotional bruising from a very polite, if surprisingly violent, apex predator (I’ve yet to find a person alive who can watch the final five minutes of that film with dry eyes) then its follow-up is more like an...

Few literary characters have endured as fondly as Paddington Bear. Created by Michael Bond in the late 1950s, this beloved Peruvian bear has captivated readers and filmgoers for generations.
Seven years after the beloved Paddington 2, a film that continues to grace the top ten lists of cinephiles young and old worldwide, we’re once again reunited with our favourite marmalade-loving friend. This time, acclaimed music video director Dougal Wilson takes the helm, bringing his unique vision to this hugely popular franchise. The film’s story, is penned by Paul King, Mark Burton and Simon Farnaby.

The upcoming third Downton Abbey film will pay tribute to Dame Maggie Smith, who portrayed Violet Crawley throughout the popular television series and films. Dame Maggie, who passed away in 2024 at age 89, had already completed filming her scenes prior to her death.
Hugh Bonneville, who plays Robert Crawley, recently discussed details about the upcoming film. He said the movie will serve as a “great lasting tribute” to Dame Maggie and her legacy within the Downton Abbey franchise. According to Bonneville, wrapping up all the character storylines in this final installment will give fans a “proper” conclusion.
The film is set to resume at Downton Abbey and will focus on saying goodbye to all the beloved characters, including a special farewell for Dame Maggie’s Violet Crawley. Producer Gareth Neame echoed that the film aims to honor one of its most important stars. Fellow producer Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay to provide closure for the fans.

First-time director Dougal Wilson takes over from Paul King. King directed the first two films, which were praised for their heart and humor. Wilson called following those films “one of the hardest acts.” He hopes to maintain what audiences love about Paddington while taking the story in a new international direction.
The film features Oscar winner Olivia Colman as a guitar-playing nun running a home for retired bears. Antonio Banderas also joins the cast in an undisclosed role. Returning cast includes Hugh Bonneville as Mr. Brown. Emily Mortimer replaces Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Brown.

Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville just confirmed some news that we already suspected.
If you don’t know, the 60-year-old actor will be back for the third film in the franchise, which will be released in September, 2025.
Keep reading to find out more…
In a new interview, he confirmed that it’s “probably” the final film in the franchise.
“We finished a third — and I think probably final — Downton Abbey film this summer, which will come out next September and that is a wonderful sort of closing off of all the stories, so it’s a proper film for the fans,” Hugh told The Chris Evans Breakfast Show in a new interview. News that this film will be the final one isn’t exactly surprising information, as it confirms what another cast member previously shared.
He did give a few details, including how they’ll be saying goodbye to the late Dame Maggie Smith.
