Paramount Global Content Distribution and Paramount Pictures UK have acquired worldwide rights on Adam Deacon’s upcoming action-comedy Sumotherhood.

The studio will release the film theatrically in the UK and Ireland later this year.

Sumotherhood marks a return to the industry for UK actor-filmmaker Deacon, who broke out as an actor in 2006’s Kidulthood and won the Bafta Rising Star award in 2012. The new film is the fourth in the Kidulthood series, after 2008’s Adulthood and 2016’s Brotherhood, the latter of which Deacon did not appear in.

Sumotherhood, the upcoming British urban action-comedy that marks the much-anticipated return to filmmaking for BAFTA winner Adam Deacon, is set to hit cinemas later this year following a major worldwide deal with Paramount, The Hollywood Reporter can reveal.

Paramount Global Content Distribution and Paramount Pictures U.K. have acquired the feature, now in postproduction and coming from Piece of Pie Productions, Deaconstructed and Belstone Pictures. Paramount Pictures U.K. is planning a theatrical release in the U.K. and Ireland later in 2023.

‘Shape of You’ hitmaker Ed Sheeran is set to shock fans as he will soon be seen playing a homeless drug addict in a new action-comedy film. The 32-year-old musician will star opposite Denise van Outen, Jennifer Saunders, Jaime Winstone, Peter Serafinowicz and Kevin Bishop in a big screen adventure that was filmed in London last year, reports Mirror.co.uk.

The film is titled ‘Sumotherhood’ and has been written and directed by Adam Deacon.

In the past, Ed has caused upset in the acting world when he was crowbarred into an episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ but has also managed to bag appearances on ‘Home and Away’, ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’.

As per Mirror.co.uk, it is unclear the extent to which Ed will feature in the new film but will be a rare instance where he is playing a character rather than himself on screen.

Documentary Now! is back on IFC and it is set to premiere Season 53 on Wednesday, October 19 at 10 p.m. Et with two new episodes. The titles of the two-part season premiere are “Soldier of Illusion,” written by John Mulaney, and “Trouver Frisson,” which plays tribute to the Agnès Varda films.

IFC on Friday released a first look teaser of the 4th season of “Documentary Now!” — or in the show’s parody universe, the 53rd season — which finds Alexander Skarsgård as a Werner Herzog-inspired filmmaker slogging through the Russian mountains in the two-part season that premieres on IFC and AMC+ on October 9.

Skarsgård is joined by “Succession” star Nicholas Braun and August Diehl of “Inglourious Basterds” in the John Mulaney-penned ode to Herzog’s “Burden of Dreams.” Kevin Bishop, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Matthias Rimpler, and, series co-creator Fred Armisen will also star.

The new season also spoofs beloved late director Agnès Varda in “Trouver Frisson,” in which French actor Liliane Rovère stars as filmmaker Ida Leos, who is searching for “frisson,” the goosebumps that have always been her guide. Written by series producers Matt Pacult and Tamsin Rawady and co-directed by Micah Gardner, the episode also stars “Documentary Now!” alumni Gary Kraus.

Adam Deacon, the BAFTA-winning star of British indie dramas “Kidulthood” and “Adulthood,” will take on his next directorial project with “Sumotherhood.”

Billed as an urban action comedy, the film sees Deacon reteaming with Michael Vu, with whom he collaborated on the 2011 film “Anuvahood” — his first turn in the director’s seat. Joining them for the new project is writing partner and comedy performer Jazzie Zonzolo.

“Sumotherhood” marks Deacon’s return to the industry after a number of years away. In the time that most television series are still putting their boots on, Inside No. 9 conjures entire narrative worlds, complete with characters, plot, gags, surprises and satisfying endings. Its half-hours are so densely packed, no TV offers better value for money or a more generous time-investment-to-reward ratio.

The series six opener ‘Wuthering Heist’ is no different. In under 30 minutes, it delivers a thriller heist that riffs around a traditional form of masked theatre, without a minute’s let-up in the volley of jokes. That full a script though, must have some casualties, and one was a planned episode ending that had to be scrapped for lack of time.

The Inside No. 9 series six opener draws on the latter, improbably combining 16th century commedia dell’arte with a modern-day jewel heist. It’s proof, if any were needed, that there really is no formula to this show. Peculiarity is its only genre.

Commedia dell’arte sounds complicated because it’s Italian, but so does bruschetta, and that’s just tomato on toast. The term describes a form of historical theatre using a group of stock characters wearing masks and doing gags around a familiar plot.

There’s a pointed takedown of very-online living fighting to emerge from the many zany, bloody distractions of “Paul Dood’s Deadly Lunch Break,” though even if it succeeded, it probably wouldn’t be all that fresh. Wringing bleak comedy from the psychological collapse of a naive middle-aged man chasing talent-show glory, this uneven sophomore feature from director Nick Gillespie most resembles a grindhouse marriage of “Joker” and “Ingrid Goes West,” with its makeup left to run in a gray British drizzle. The celebrity-forging cycle of reality TV and the false validation of social media likes aren’t exactly hard targets, so Gillespie’s film can’t help but hit them squarely here and there. Yet it’s hard to escape the queasy sense that such points are also being scored at the expense of a vulnerable protagonist’s mental frailty, at which stage the laughs rather dry up.

Belstone Pictures has inked a worldwide sales deal with Concourse Media on hot SXSW title “Paul Dood’s Deadly Lunch Break.”

Georgia prosecutors pursuing a criminal investigation against former president Donald Trump for trying to influence the 2020 election are eyeing a call Sen. Lindsey Graham made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger as part of that probe, the Washington Post reported Friday.

Shooting now on location in the UK and Bulgaria, the film will cast the antics of the Roman Empire in a comedic light. It will follow Atti, a Roman teenager with brains but very little brawn. When one of his clever schemes falls foul of Emperor Nero, he is forced to join the army and is sent to miserable, cold, wet Britain where the natives are revolting – quite literally. The BBC is giving its Porridge sequel series the boot...

Sad news for fans of the Beeb's recently-revived Porridge, we're afraid - the series won't be back for more banged-up-(not)-abroad hijinx, as it's been nixed after just one series.

The show featured Kevin Bishop as Nigel, the cyber crime-committing grandson of Ronnie Barker's character Norman Fletcher, alongside Mark Bonnar, Dominic Coleman, Dave Hill, Harman Singh, Jason Barnett and Ricky Grover.

The BBC first floated the project as a pilot in its Landmark Comedy Season a couple of years ago. The new version of the classic sitcom was well received, and so 6 episodes were ordered and plonked in a Friday night slot. It performed fine there for a spell, but it seems that either the ratings, or general interest in keeping Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement's new Porridge alive, must have started deteriorating rather quickly.

Brilliant! The BBC has ordered a full series of new comedy Motherland, and of its rebooted Porridge starring Kevin Bishop...

Two new comedies are coming to the BBC: Motherland, written by the winning combination of Graham Linehan, Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh and Helen Linehan, and a rebooted version of Porridge, from original creators Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. 

Both part of the BBC's recent Landmark Sitcom season, the pilot for Motherland took an acerbic look at modern middle-class parenting. Starring Anna Maxwell Martin--an absolute treat to see in a comedic role--as harassed working mother of two Julia, it showed her dealings with playground queen bee Amanda (Lucy Punch), chaotic social outcast Liz (Diane Morgan) and eager-to-please stay at home dad Kevin (Paul Ready).

A Few Less Men, the sequel to Stephan Elliott's 2011 comedy A Few Best Men, was helmed by Mark Lamprell, the screenwriter of Babe: Pig in the City and director of 2000's My Mother Frank and 2013's Goddess.

Lamprell came on board after reading the script by Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral), who wrote the original film.

"It was lovely working on somebody else's screenplay because it was a really solid screenplay structurally," Lamprell said. "I could see that there was a really good movie in there. Dean's a very accomplished writer. The whole guts of it were laid out before me.".

Lamprell, who got his start at Kennedy Miller making Bts documentaries such as The Making of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), describes A Few Less Men as "a silly comedy.".

Arclight Films have released a first look at A Few Less Men, the sequel to 2011's A Few Best Men..

The new film sees Goddess' Mark Lamprell taking over directing duties from Priscilla's Stephan Elliot, and will be released by StudioCanal in Australia and Nz.

The film was produced by Laurence Malkin, Tania Chambers and Share Stallings and written by Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral), and footage is currently being screened to buyers in Cannes.

BBC iPlayer original comedy drama The Rack Pack tells the story of Alex “Hurricane” Higgins and snooker's exploding 1980s popularity…

“Colourful” is the preferred press euphemism for describing lives like that of snooker’s Alex Higgins. The “bad boy” of the game, he was a genius on the baize who drank, smoked, snorted and head-butted his way to world champion status and back. Talk about colour. As the tabloids tell it, Higgins’ story is a nothing short of a kaleidoscope.

It’s harder to describe his 2010 death as similarly vibrant. Higgins died broke and alone, wilfully starving in sheltered housing after throat cancer left him toothless and skeletal.

That’s the bit of these stories we prefer to ignore. Stories of men like Higgins and his Belfast contemporary George Best, whose talent comes packaged in a personality that erodes it. Men whose self-destruction isn’t just tolerated by their public but celebrated.

Feature is based on the character made famous in BBC comedy The Office.

Principal photography has begun today on David Brent: Life On The Road, directed, written and starring Ricky Gervais.

The feature sees a documentary crew catching up with David Brent 12 years on from the BBC2 ‘documentary’ The Office. Brent is now a travelling salesman, chasing his dream of rock stardom by self-financing a UK tour with his band, Foregone Conclusion.

Shooting on location in and around London and Slough, production will shoot for five weeks and is due to wrap on Dec 18.

In addition to Gervais, the cast includes Ben Bailey Smith as Dom, most recently seen rapping in Brent’s Equality Street and writer-comedian Tom Basden as Dan, Brent’s road manager.

The BBC has commissioned its first feature-length scripted film for iPlayer - a comedy drama based on the rivalry between snooker players Alex Higgins and Steve Davis.

Endemol Shine indie Zeppotron will produce The Rack Pack, a 90-minute-plus film exploring the “glory days” of the 1970s and 80s snooker scene.

The film is penned by Shaun Pye, Mark Chappell and Alan Connor, the writing team behind Sky Arts’ A Young Doctor’s Notebook, which starred Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm..

There's already a Dad's Army movie remake on the horizon, and now there's going to be a drama based around its origins.

EastEnders star Shane Richie will play Bill Pertwee in BBC Two's Making Dad's Army, a one-off film about the classic and beloved British sitcom.

The drama will focus on the show's original idea in 1967 up until its first broadcast in 1968, and the struggles creators Jimmy Perry and David Croft had to endure to get it on screen.

Friday Night Dinner's Paul Ritter will play Perry, while Game of Thrones actor Richard Dormer will portray Croft.

At the same board meeting, the government agency also backed Kimble Rendall’s The Nest, a China-Australia co-production to be primarily made in Australia.

The agency is investing $3.19 million in the three projects, a remarkable economic multiplier as the combined budgets are $38.4 million.

An official Australian/Chinese co-production, The Nest tells of the discovery of a well-preserved mummified Emperor from 200 BC China, which unleashes a 2,000 year-old nightmare.

Arclight Films, which produced Rendall.s Chinese hit Bait 3D, is producing through Gary Hamilton, Ying Ye and Mark Lazarus with a Chinese partner yet to be identified.
