As a film student, I, like many before me, found myself caught under the mesmerizing spell of Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky soon after I watched the opening shot of his seminal Stalker in class. I rushed to find a copy and, sitting on my dorm room bed — laptop open, headphones blasting — I watched, mouth agape, as the sheer poeticism and beauty of his work washed over me. For some, Russian slow cinema is a sleep-inducing slog better left on the dusty shelves of film history. For others (myself included), it proves a rapturous experience through its challenges and subsequent rewards. Steeped in philosophy, dread, and beauty, Tarkovsky’s picture is a staple and lasting example of the medium’s particular powers. With each revisit, Stalker continually unfolds new layers to the attentive viewer: though it was released in 1979, essayists and scholars (not to mention teachers and students) are still having a field day.

Washington, Oct 2: White-collar criminals, convicted of fraud, embezzlement, tax violation, anti-trust and other business offenses, report no greater level of difficulty adjusting to prison than those in a general prison population, according to a new study.
The research from the University of Cincinnati found that when it comes to specific adjustment issues- problems with cell mates, feelings of safety and general difficulties, white-collar criminals actually report fewer problems than other prison populations.
Michael Benson, professor of criminal justice at Uc, said before entering prison, most white-collar criminals are.

Today sees an odd confluence of stories on Asghar Farhadi, his Academy Award-winner for Best Foreign Film, A Separation, and his follow-up, which will "center on a love story between a young Iranian woman and a North African man, and will begin filming within weeks," as the Afp reports. And while it'll be shot in France, Farhadi is insisting that "I love my country and I will not change it for anywhere in the world… I will never emigrate from Iran."
Meantime, the Center for Directors of Iranian Cinema and the High Council of Producers of Iranian Cinema had been planning a ceremony in Tehran, welcoming Farhadi back home, a gesture of appreciation. But as the AP reports, authorities called off the event, "even though the government had hailed his win as a triumph over a competitor from Israel."

[1] A lot of the reviews I've read of this fall's new series seem to keep returning to the same theme: television comedy is making a comeback. That's definitely the case in this edition of TV Bits, which includes news about the cancellation of NBC's much-hyped drama The Playboy Club, and new sitcoms for AMC and Fox. Hit the jump for more. Each fall season, there are a couple new series that get marketed extensively and still manage to flop. (Remember how hard it was to escape ads for My Generation last year? And then how quickly that series died?) This time around, that show seems to be The Playboy Club, which NBC has cancelled after just three episodes. The '60s-set drama, which starred Amber Heard as a recently hired Bunny, received disappointing ratings in each of its three outings and was little loved by critics. NBC will be replacing...

Exclusive: Just when we thought the trend of comedies based on blogs and Twitter feeds was cooling off, it’s back! Fox has tapped Ugly Betty creator Silvio Horta to develop a half-hour comedy based on the infamous blog Texts From Last Night. Happy Madison and Sony Pictures TV are producing. Fox has been high on the Web property. The network, Happy Madison and Sony TV first took a stab at developing a comedy based on the Web site two seasons ago with Steve Holland as the writer. Last season, it was redeveloped with different writers, Marc Abrams and Michael Benson. Now a new take will be written by Horta, who had been looking to branch out into half-hour comedies after creating 2 sci-fi dramas, The Chronicle and Jake 2.0 and a dramedy, ABC’s Ugly Betty. The user-generated Tfnl blog posts “regrettable,” often embarrassing text messages usually sent late at...

The first hour of the final season of ABC's "Lost" has leaked online, and the reaction is not what industry insiders expected.
Though preview content for heavily serialized dramas such as "Lost" are typically and frantically consumed online by fans, the sixth season of the ABC hit has managed to build such an epic level of anticipation that many fans are doing the unthinkable: refusing to watch the leaks.
When the opening scene from the premiere popped up online after a fan promotion Friday, users of one popular social network site voted to "bury" the video.
"Why spoil it now?" wrote one fan with the moniker MyWhiteNoise. "I'd rather watch it in hi-def and surround sound than ruin the surprise and watch some (low-quality) video."
To TV executives, such statements are like something from an alternative universe, the polar-bear opposite of how young, Web-savvy viewers typically respond to content. Fans...

Debuted November 20 during the airing of "Grey's Anatomy" is the promo video of "Lost" that features the new single from The Fray. The video that is produced by ABC and Epic Records combines exclusive scenes from the upcoming fifth season of the drama thriller series plus the band's live performance footage on "You Found Me".
Rooting from their successful debut album "How to Save a Life" (2005), The Fray will drop their self-titled sophomore effort on February 3, 2009 with "You Found Me" as the lead single. "The record definitely has some isolation and loneliness rolled into the fabric of the sound and lyrics," frontman Isaac Slade explains. "We'd been gone from our family and friends for more time than we'd been home. You start to lose sight of priorities and lose sight of balance and you don't really have the luxury of a routine. When that happens, naturally it comes out in the music.

HBO and Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis are developing a series based on the singer’s unconventional, rock 'n' roll childhood. Kiedis has partnered with Catapult 360 partners Marc Abrams and Michael Benson to create the series, tentatively titled Scar Tissue. Abrams and Benson are scouting for a writer to pen the script, which will center on Kiedis' relationship with his father, Spider, who sold drugs and mingled with rock stars on the Sunset Strip, all while aspiring to get into showbiz. The show will begin with young Kiedis moving from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to West Hollywood to live with his dad. But Kiedis' father, having been raised in a tyrannical household, decided to go to the other extreme. The show will also center on West Hollywood and Los Angeles in the early 1970s, including the rock stars encountered by Kiedis and his father (who, according to rumors, was...

'Zip' gets new lock at NBC
"Zip" is back in contention at NBC.
NBC has handed out a cast-contingent pilot order to the Universal Media Studios/Reveille project, which was originally developed last season when it was picked up by the network as a pilot directed by Dan Attias and starring Rob Huebel.
Written by Mark Rizzo, Marc Abrams and Michael Benson, "Zip" revolves around "have nots" living in a ZIP code full of "haves."
NBC's previous regime passed on the pilot in May. When Reveille's Ben Silverman joined the network as co-chairman in June, he put the project back in development.
Rizzo, Abrams and Benson penned a new script, which is getting a cast-contingent green light. Richard Shepard is set to direct the new pilot, which is exec produced by Abrams and Benson. Rizzo is serving as supervising producer.
"Zip" is one of two Reveille/UMS comedy pilots at NBC, along with "Kath & Kim," which also is casting.
