Ricki Lake Opens Up About Christian Evans’ Struggles (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Ricki Lake has opened up about her late ex-husband Christian Evans’ death and how his struggles with mental health severely impacted her life.
At End Well’s annual symposium on November 22, Lake recalled trying to “save” Evans, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, from his “psychotic breaks” before he took his own life in 2017.
Ricki Lake Wasn’t Aware of Bipolar Disorder at First
The former talk show host claimed that she knew Evans was in a lot of pain due to depression even though she “didn’t understand what bipolar disorder meant at first.”
The 56-year-old added, “We were together four years before he had his first psychotic break. It was almost more shocking seeing him turn into another person than his ultimate death.”
Lake stated it became very challenging for her when she went to great lengths to save Evans’ life.

The film-maker’s 1984 shocker gave pop culture a new, physics-defying villain in the misshape of Freddy Krueger
From the beginning of his career, when he reworked Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring into The Last House on the Left, one of the nastiest (and smartest) exploitation horror films of the 1970s, the director Wes Craven had the unique ability to reconcile high-minded ideas with low-down genre kicks. In person, he had a professorial air because he was once, in fact, a professor, teaching English and the humanities at various north-eastern colleges before picking up a 16mm camera. He would turn The Hills Have Eyes into a cannibalistic shocker that doubled as a stark class critique and give the villainous couple of The People Under the Stairs the unmistakable echo of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. He understood as well as anyone how horror could be a vessel for larger themes, so...

When Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev sit down to discuss a potential nuclear arms treaty in the upcoming film “Reykjavik,” the actors portraying them, Jeff Daniels and Jared Harris, will be lowering themselves into the actual chairs in the actual building where the historic 1986 meeting took place.
Writer-director Michael Russell Gunn, who previously shot “Thai Cave Rescue,” says he loves the “authenticity” of shooting at the actual Höfði House in Iceland. Producer John Logan Pierson adds, “there’s an energy and spirit that comes from shooting in the real place.”
This authenticity was only feasible because of Iceland’s rebates and professional crews. “We needed to make this for a competitive number and sometimes you want to film in a place that isn’t production friendly and lacks a robust infrastructure,” Pierson says.

The Sunshine Place, the ratings-topping and award-winning documentary podcast that counts Robert Downey Jr. as one of its executive producers, will devote its second season to a topic with which the Oscar-winning actor feels a personal connection: a controversial ‘tough-love’ teen rehab program.
The podcast’s first season, which focused on the early behavior-modification rehab Synanon, hit No. 1 on the Apple Podcasts chart and won the 2023 Deadline Club Award for audio investigative reporting. Its second season will examine Straight Inc., which emerged in the 1980s, was endorsed by First Lady Nancy Reagan and swept the nation — but also, according to survivors who speak to The Sunshine Place, employed abuse, torture and brainwashing.
Season two will launch with the posting of its first two episodes on Oct. 30; additional episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays through Dec. 11. (The trailer for season two can be heard here.) Executive producers include Downey, his...

If the presidential campaign stirs your appetite for still more political noise, here’s a quick solution: Catch the new biopics of Donald Trump or Ronald Reagan. Trump calls the movie about him “a hit job”; Reagan likely would find his biopic a sleeper..
Is there an audience for political movies? Perhaps it’s no coincidence that two movie stars known as policy activists instead have created caper films for the popcorn crowd, or the streaming subset.
George Clooney glibly glides through Wolfs, co-starring Brad Pitt, while Matt Damon ambles through the chaos of The Instigators, co-starring Casey Affleck. The paydays are formidable, but their Tomatoes will whither on the vine.
But then political movies always have had a troubled history in terms of impact and accuracy: One helped obliterate an entire studio regime, another triggered a bitter creative feud. But none became a major audience hit.

In modern royal family history, no other member has made as much of an impact as Princess Diana. She continues to inspire royal watchers of all ages, from those who recall her entry into the royal family or those who learned of her impact from history books. Hollywood is home to many experts on counter-programming but insiders behind the new film Reagan, which had its world premiere Tuesday at the town’s most iconic theater, insist that it was merely a coincidence that the event bumped up against the Democratic National Convention.
“It wasn’t intended but what the heck, that’s awesome,” offered filmmaker Sean McNamara with a smile, adding that despite missing the night’s program that featured onetime White House residents Barack and Michelle Obama, he would be watching clips once he got home. “I always watch it all day if I’m not working to try and get a sense of what everybody is saying, both Republicans and Democrats.”
McNamara, who pointed out that he’s a registered Democrat, said people are sometimes too quick to link politics to movies when sometimes those ties don’t tell the full story. “Look at the movie Lincoln,...

Reagan is a sweeping new biopic that tells the story of the late President Ronald Reagan in its entirety. Set to be released in U.S. theaters on August 30, it stars Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller, Robert Davi, Lesley-Anne Down, and Jon Voight.
Earlier this week, we sat down with Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow) and Miller (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story) to learn more about how they approached playing Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
As well as offering a deep dive into doing the President and First Lady justice on screen, the actors share insights into why it was important to also explore Ronald and Nancy's shared history in Hollywood.
His journey to the Oval Office aside, Reagan is an epic love story that provides a rarely-seen glimpse into Hollywood's Golden Age. It also delivers a surprisingly no-holds-barred account of how the future President's acting career ultimately fizzled out.

The Dennis Quaid-led biopic of Ronald Reagan is one of those movies I feel like I’ve been hearing about forever. While it’s been in the planning stages for years, it first really started to pick up steam in 2019 when director Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer) signed on to helm the film, along with the great Dennis Quaid to play the famed 40th President of the United States.
Shot at the height of the pandemic in 2020, the film has spent a good chunk of time in post-production. I’ve been seeing posters of it at CinemaCon since 2021. Yet, the movie is now set for release, and star Dennis Quaid has been open about how pleased he is with the finished product, calling it his favorite movie of his own since The Right Stuff.

Where in the World Is Diller’s Memoir?
In late July, when Barry Diller’s forthcoming memoir, Who Knew, suddenly disappeared from Amazon — after it had popped up for presales ahead of a planned fall release — it raised all sorts of eyebrows. Had the book’s publisher, Knopf, pulled the project for some reason? Had there been an issue with Amazon (and Target, too, which also was taking preorders)? Was the tome even real in the first place? After all, Knopf hadn’t announced anything about a book deal with Diller, despite an early leak to Page Six. The answer, it turns out, is none of the above. Sources close to the project tell Rambling Reporter that it was Diller himself who delayed publication. After sending early copies to a close circle of friends for comments, the 82-year-old media mogul turned memoirist decided the manuscript needed some last-minute noodling. He...

July 29th marked forty-three years since Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s lavish royal nuptials at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Diana Was Only 20 Years Old When She Married Charles
The former couple, who were wed on July 29th, 1981, had what was, at the time, dubbed “The wedding of the century.” Many people thought Prince Charles and Diana had a storybook romance. Little did they know, not so much.
A young and radiant Lady Diana Spencer, who was just 20 years old at the time, married Prince Charles, who was 12 years older than her.
The wedding was seen globally by a television audience of 750 million in 74 countries. Truth be told, the ceremony almost didn’t happen. The night before the wedding, Charles admitted to Diana that “he didn’t love her.”
But Charles and Diana went through with the wedding. It is thought that Diana’s father, Earl Spencer, changed her mind about calling it off.

On July 23, 1986, Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, and it was quite the occasion. Like many brides in the 80s, Fergie wore a giant satin dress with long, puffy sleeves.
Sarah Had Her Dress Decorated With Her Coat Of Arms
Sarah’s dress featured a magnificent 17-foot-long beaded train embroidered with A and S initials.
Fergie initially had some bizarre ideas for her wedding dress that the designer refused to create, including decorative teddy bears and helicopters.
The helicopters she requested were likely to honor the groom, who had previously served as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy.
Several former Palace workers have revealed how Prince Andrew collected teddy bears and proudly displayed them on his bed. No one ever said the Duke of York was normal.
Charlotte Briggs, a former Buckingham Palace maid, explained. She was told about Andrew’s teddy bear infatuation as soon as she got the job.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. (U.S. National Archives photo)
The New York Post prematurely published an obituary for former President Jimmy Carter on Tuesday after a letter that appeared to be from his estate went viral on social media.
The article, which was online for about 15 minutes, resembled a pre-written obituary that was ready to be published the moment the news outlet learned of his passing, according to a copy of the write-up reviewed by The Desk before it was pulled.
The write-up did not reference the letter that circulated on X, which contained numerous typos and obvious satirical quotes, including one that referred to Carter’s late wife Rosalynn as a “baddie” and former First Lady Nancy Reagan as a “throat goat.” The letter also included a false quote attributed to Carter’s son, Chip Carter, that claimed part of his father’s legacy would be his “peace-through-weakness agenda.

The creature feature, at its most basic, is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role as the primary antagonist; the term says it all. It’s the creature part that’s loose for interpretation, of course. A creature feature could be anything from carnivorous aliens from space to manmade monsters to genetically altered animals run amok.
This week’s streaming picks highlight creature features from the glorious age of practical effects: the ’80s. These five horror titles run the gamut in tone, style, and creature, showcasing just how nebulous and varied the creature feature can be. As the competition series that revived the career and public image of Donald Trump, The Apprentice might be the most impactful -- and infamous -- reality show in TV history.
Seventeen years after it wrapped up its original run, the NBC series still occupies a surprisingly large place in our national consciousness.
In fact, it's the basis for an upcoming book by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh and a new movie from director Ali Abbasi.
The book will be available on June 18, and the movie will be in a theater near you on -- well, that's not quite clear.
You see, Abbasi's film -- aptly titled The Apprentice -- has yet to secure a distribution deal in the US.
With hot-button subject matter and an all-star cast that includes Sebastian Stan as Trump and Succession's Jeremy Strong as the infamous McCarthyite attorney Roy Cohn, it's the sort of film that...

By the time he died at 59 on October 2, 1985 as the most famous early casualty of the AIDS crisis, Rock Hudson had unwittingly become more than just a tragic victim of a horrible disease; he was also one of the first star actors of his generation to be outed as gay. It was something he zealously guarded by necessity in order to remain a star. It’s at the center of the HBO/Max film documentary “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed,” which paints a fascinating but bittersweet portrait of the film icon’s life in the closet. “It goes back to the ethics of the day,” believes the film’s director Stephen Kijak (pronounced “Kayak”). “One didn’t speak of those things.” But a code of silence also helped Hudson keep his secret across decades. “There was such goodwill around him,” he adds. “He was notoriously the nicest man in Hollywood.

Jeff Harris and Bernie Kukoff's sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes" debuted in 1978 and ran 189 episodes over a whopping eight seasons. The series starred Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, two impoverished kids from Harlem whose mother had recently died. They were adopted by the wealthy Mr. Drummond (Conrad Bain), a Park Avenue millionaire. The series revolved around the relationship Arnold and Willis developed with their adopted father, new sister Kimberly (Dana Plato), and one of three kindly housekeepers. In the 1984 season, Mr. Drummond married a woman named Maggie, and she was played by Dixie Carter for two years before being replaced by Mary Ann Mobley.
"Diff'rent Strokes" wasn't just overwhelmingly popular, but it also served as a template for a decade's worth of booming sitcoms. It was "Diff'rent Strokes" that famously presented "very special episodes" about serious issues like drug addiction, homelessness, eating disorders, and looking out...

Director Sean McNamara‘s Reagan, the first full-length feature on the 40th U.S. president, is out with its first trailer.
A biopic starring Dennis Quaid and set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the film follows Reagan’s journey from his childhood in Dixon, Illinois, to Hollywood, and then on to the White House. It begins with an aging Petrovich (Jon Voight), now 90 years old, being visited by an up-and-coming Russian leader who wants to know how the Soviet Union was lost.
Petrovich, the spy who knows everything there is to know about Reagan, begins recounting the tale of his adversary: the man he mockingly nicknamed “The Crusader,” beginning in 1922, when 11-year-old Ronald Reagan faces his first life crisis.

Well, the first trailer for Dennis Quaid’s Ronald Reagan biopic has debuted. The actor plays the 40th President of the United States in the feature, which promises to span the major events of Reagan’s life, including his confrontation with childhood bullies, his acting career and time leading the Screen Actors Guild and his ascendant rise in politics bolstered by anti-communist rhetoric. Set to a cover of Tears for Fears’ ’80s hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” the trailer tracks how Reagan wanted to rule the free world — and did.
“I was a lifeguard on a river. And I learned how to read the currents — not just the ones on the surface, but also the ones deep underneath the water,” President Reagan says in the trailer, drawing a comparison to his own eye for geopolitical tensions. The footage also teases more well-known moments from the conservative President’s tenure,...

One such chapter was his whirlwind romance with Brigitte Nielsen, which captivated the public as the two became one of the most iconic celebrity couples of the 1980s.

Patti Davis, the daughter of Ronald Reagan, stated that her father would not want to have any association with today’s Republican Party.
“[Reagan] was much more moderate on a whole host of issues, while at the same time, much more hawkish on Russia than what you’re seeing from the modern day Republican party,” CNN’s Jim Acosta, the chief domestic correspondent for CNN, said to Davis during an interview.
“What would your father think about what he’s seeing right now,” he then asked her. “Do you have any insights on that?”
“Well I’d – I’d like to answer your question in sort of a bigger – from a bigger view than – than, you know, current – the current political scene,” Davis responded. “I’m not a political strategist, and quite frankly, I’m so tired of hearing about the current political scene.

The word is all over town. After leading SAG-AFTRA to an historic new deal with the Hollywood studios, Fran Drescher has leverage, rediscovered fame and momentum.
Could she use all that to transition into a political career?
“This has been a great launching pad for her. So it wouldn’t be unusual for her to try to make that leap,” said Jorge Flores, a Los Angeles-based political consultant who has run campaigns for Congress and state offices.
“Certainly she has raised her profile significantly, and has developed a base with certain constituencies across labor,” he noted. “I could see her potentially running for Congress on the sort of issues that she’s been dealing with in SAG-AFTRA. Macro issues as far as cost of living, equity issues, is where I think her platform would be aligned with a member of Congress.”

Movie stars no longer “own” Hollywood, we are told, but two hallowed brand names owned much of the media space this week.
At age 80, Harrison Ford is soldiering through the interview circuit to energize his balky Indy numbers. And an HBO doc about Rock Hudson this week reminded viewers of an era when stardom was as much manufactured as earned.
Both Ford and Hudson coveted their celebrity, which now borders on the mythic. But early in their careers, both struggled through identity crises, trying to define a persona they could comfortably live with.
The young Hudson was so gawky and naïve that he required emergency coaching on both his speech and sexuality from his ambitious manager, Henry Willson. Neither Willson nor his protégé imagined that Hudson would become a superstar both in cult movies, like Pillow Talk, and in classics, like Giant. Who else could hold his own opposite both Doris Day and Elizabeth Taylor?...

The discovery of cocaine at the White House on Sunday has stirred the imagination of the media and some Republicans — including Donald Trump, who wasted no time in suggesting that either Joe or Hunter Biden were the clandestine owners. While there is of course no evidence that the 80-year-old president and his son were responsible for the tiny bag found in a high-traffic area where guests touring the White House are asked to leave their belongings, rumors of illicit drug use have peppered the White House’s history.

The most important thing about “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed” is that, within the essential act of reclamation it provides for the star, it doesn’t just write off the Hollywood icon’s life as sad. That’s a remarkable thing for a documentary in which its last 40 minutes are as harrowing a depiction of AIDS in the ’80s there’s been in a film since “How to Survive a Plague.”
Certainly, it’s infuriating and upsetting on many levels: that Hudson wasn’t allowed to fly on a commercial airliner because of his diagnosis and had to rent an Air France Boeing 747 at the cost of $250,000 to return home to Los Angeles from Paris as it became clear his experimental treatment there had failed. And the revelation that his friend Nancy Reagan even urged her husband to deny him treatment at a military hospital is beyond enraging.

There has long been a grave misunderstanding of the spoof movie, a genre that takes one movie or cinematic trend and recreates it while mocking it mercilessly. It's easy to write off comedy staples like "Airplane!" and "Spaceballs" as delivery systems for silly non-stop gags, and sure enough, they absolutely are. But at its best, the spoof genre is much more insidious.
Most great spoof movies don't just mock something popular, they mock something serious. "Top Gun" is a self-serious motion picture, one that's seemingly unaware or at least uncritical of its own artificiality and jingoism. Fans of "Top Gun" may laugh at the film's funnier moments but the film itself is not to be laughed at. That's why a film like "Hot Shots!" is such a delight. The jokes are absurd and rapid-fire, but they're all aimed at taking a movie that set itself on a pedestal down a...

You probably know more about Ronald Reagan from U.S. History than Film Studies. Make no mistake. Before Reagan ever ran for office, he was an actor. The 40th U.S. president started his entertainment career as "Dutch" Reagan, a radio sports announcer in Des Moines, Iowa. Reagan honed his storytelling chops by recreating Chicago Cubs games with nothing but a slip sent to him by telegraph. The 26-year-old dreamed of big-screen stardom, so he joined the Cubs for spring training in Southern California — to snag a screen test with Warner Brothers. The WB studio suits liked what they saw, and film actor Ronald Reagan was born.
While Reagan had a better Hollywood career than most, he never became a bonafide movie star. Throughout Reagan's political career, opponents and detractors slandered him as a "B-movie actor." However, Reagan was a B-movie actor. No, he wasn't starring in the 1940s equivalent...

Elizabeth Banks' new film "Cocaine Bear" was indeed inspired by true events. In 1985, a drug smuggler dropped a duffel bag containing $15 million worth of cocaine from a plane into the woods below. There, it was found by a 175-pound black bear, who proceeded to consume the cocaine. Unlike in Banks' movie, where the bear eats the cocaine and goes on a killing spree, the real-life bear wasn't known to have killed anyone. The bear simply died of a drug overdose. Because it was so well-preserved, the bear was taxidermied and subsequently passed around among various owners, not all of whom knew its cause of death. Waylon Jennings owned the Cocaine Bear at one point. These days, one can visit the Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington, Ky, and visit the bear's taxidermied body. Its current owners, Whit Hiler and Griffin VanMeter, have cleverly named their prize "Pablo Escobear."
Banks' film is refreshingly uncomplicated.

Actors John Wayne and Ronald Regan both know what it’s like to be a star in Hollywood. The Western actor was undeniably the bigger movie star, but they both understood what it felt like to receive good and bad headlines in the press. As a result, Wayne kindly went out of his way to ensure that Reagan and his wife, Nancy, had a cheerful phone call to warm their hearts.

Reagan was once the president of the Screen Actors Guild, where he made quite some noise in a showdown with major studio executives over the residual payment system that remains in place. He had difficulty getting them to even engage in the conversation, let alone have any sort of intelligent negotiations.

Publicity executive Jeffrey Ballard, who represented Charlie Sheen for many years through his company Jeff Ballard PR, died Jan. 30 in Santa Monica after a five-year battle with cancer. He was 64.
His death was confirmed by his friend Brad Bessey.
Charlie Sheen said in a statement, “As my publicist of 37 years, it’s no secret that he had his work cut out for him. He met every challenge head on with class and patience. As my dear friend of 40 years, he was equally loyal and generous to a fault. Safe travels Jb, you are sorely missed, now and forever.”
Ballard got his start in Hollywood while still a teenager, crashing the set of “Eight is Enough” as a high school journalism student and signing his first two clients — the show’s stars Adam Rich and Dick Van Patten.
He was dubbed the “boy publicist to the stars,” and opened Jeff Ballard P.
