Let’s talk about one of the internet’s weirdest obsessions: killing off celebrities who are very much alive. What started as rare newspaper blunders in the early 1900s has morphed into a full-blown social media sport, where a single viral post can “declare” a star’s death faster than you can say “fake news.”

From Charlie Chaplin’s early brush with rumored demise to today’s pop icons getting “canceled” by bogus death reports, celebrities have basically become professional rumor-busters. These death hoaxes aren’t just random internet noise—they’re bizarre opportunities for stars to showcase their wit, turning potentially scary misinformation into clever comebacks and marketing moments. Turns out, in the age of viral headlines, staying alive can be its own form of entertainment.

Early next year, Saturday Night Live will air a three-hour primetime special to celebrate its 50th anniversary, featuring celebrity guests and those surviving former SNL cast members who haven’t made Lorne Michaels’ enemies list — yet.
But this is hardly the first time that SNL has thrown a big party for itself. One of the biggest celebrations happened back in 1999. The Saturday Night Live 25th Anniversary Special featured Bill Murray belting out Bruce Springsteen tunes, a touching tribute to Phil Hartman and the most awkward Jerry Seinfeld appearance this side of the Unfrosted press tour.
One famous face who didn’t show up to the big bash was Eric Idle, which is odd because the Monty Python star was a key fixture in the early days of SNL. He hosted the show four times in the ‘70s, once while pretending to be gravely ill.

The recent batch of Ghostbusters movies — not including the 2016 reboot that Sony has decided doesn’t exist, it seems — introduced the world to a new group of ethically-questionable paranormal cops, played by Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard. But it also incorporated the surviving members of the original Ghostbusters team (minus Rick Moranis who had better things to do).
The most recent entry in the series, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, was a modest box office hit earlier this year, making just over $200 million on a budget of $100 million. While it remains to be seen if the franchise will continue (Coon recently revealed that she’s yet to see a script for a follow-up), if we do get another Ghostbusters movie, it will probably be without the original cast.
While speaking with The New York Post, franchise co-creator, and chief Ghostbusters hype man, Dan Aykroyd suggested that he may...

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, with the actor working with some of the most acclaimed filmmakers, especially during the earlier stages of his career. As a result, Cruise appeared in some truly unique films. One of these was helmed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick and emerged as the most explicit movie in Cruise’s career.

However, Cruise wasn’t the first choice for the lead role in Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut. Instead, Woody Allen and Tom Hanks were the favored choices among Kubrick’s wishlist of potential leading men for what turned out to be his final film as a director. Here is everything you need to know about the original choice for Eyes Wide Shut.

Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. rights to “Relay” following the twisty thriller’s debut at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The film was directed by David MacKenzie, who oversaw the Oscar-nominated “Hell or High Water,” and stars Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Lily James (“Pam & Tommy”) and Sam Worthington (“Avatar”). Bleecker Street is planning to release the film in theaters next year.
“Relay” puts a new spin on the kind of paranoid loner films like “The Conversation” and “The Parallax View” that populated ’70s cinema. In it, Ahmed plays a “fixer” who specializes in brokering payoffs between businesses and employees who have secrets about corporate malfeasance that could ruin companies. Because of the nature of his work, he keeps his identity a secret through meticulous planning, but his guard drops ever so slightly when he takes on a new client (Lily James) who needs his protection to stay alive.

Bleecker Street has swooped on Relay, acquiring U.S. rights to the high-concept contemporary thriller, starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington, which impressed in its world premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Written by Justin Piasecki and directed by David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water), the film will be released in theaters sometime next year.
In Relay, Ahmed plays a world class “fixer” who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten their ruin. Since 2012, when she broke onto Broadway with “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” Carrie Coon has shared the stage (theatrical and sound) with a formidable number of acting icons. In “The Post,” she stood opposite Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep (while being directed by some nerd named Steven Spielberg). Then there’s “Widows” with Viola Davis, “The Nest” next to Jude Law, two “Ghostbusters” movies alongside Bill Murray, and, this critic would argue, “The Leftovers,” across from the incomparable Ann Dowd. Soon, she’ll be traveling back to “The Gilded Age” where she’ll thrust and parry with none other than Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald.
There are plenty more Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winners to add to the list — and more to come in the years ahead — but for all the praise Coon heaps on her cherished co-stars, she said there were only two times when she was “scared to...

With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.
Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).
Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.
“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

Who you gonna call for the next Ghostbusters movie? Maybe not franchise mainstays Dan Aykroyd or Bill Murray. It seems as though the two original Ghostbusters may have hung up their proton packs for good, based on Aykroyd’s recent comments in an interview.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire scared up an impressive $188 million at the box office and even received a haunt attraction at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights. The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife once again reunited the original Ghostbusters with the new generation of Spenglers, furthering the bridge between original fans and newcomers.
When speaking with the New York Post while promoting his History Channel series The UnBelievable With Dan Aykroyd, the actor shared that he doesn’t expect that he or Murray will return for the expected sequel. He said, “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast,...

When there’s something strange in the neighborhood, the first people you’re gonna call are the Ghostbusters. But you better leave Ray Stantz off the list because Dan Aykroyd says he has no place in saving the world anymore.
Speaking with the New York Post, Dan Aykroyd confirmed that he doesn’t see a place for himself – or any of the original Ghostbusters – in the future of the franchise, simply because of how it has progressed over the last couple of entries. “I don’t see that coming. I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.”

Maybe don’t call Dan Aykroyd?
The writer-star of the 1984 Ghostbusters said it was unlikely he and Bill Murray would return to their iconic roles in the sci-fi comedy franchise.
“I don’t see that coming,” Aykroyd told the New York Post while promoting his History Channel series The UnBelievable With Dan Aykroyd.
The Og Saturday Night Live cast member and Oscar nominee continued, “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.”
Aykroyd, Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis starred as Manhattan-based paranormal investigators in the 1984 lighthearted action-horror movie, from a script by Aykroyd and Ramis, with Ivan Reitman directing. Also starring Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, the pic became a critical and commercial success, spawning several sequels and reboots, as well as merchandise and a coveted spot in the cultural zeitgeist.

It could be any day, any night, any city, and Bill Murray could be there. Maybe this sad clown folk hero is hitting karaoke night or doing a frat’s dishes or crashing a kickball game or bartending at some random joint or giving a speech at a bachelor party or popping in for a wedding photo shoot. Bill Murray is that “fun” uncle, the loose one with no clear direction yet always grounded in…well, whatever he wants. Maybe he’ll show up, maybe he won’t. Maybe he’ll have a job this year, maybe he won’t bother. Maybe he’ll sock a male co-worker on the nose, maybe he’ll direct misconduct at a woman. It’s been nearly half a century since Saturday Night Live premiered and changed the course of television history, and NBC is planning a very big birthday party for the beloved sketch comedy series indeed. When will the SNL 50th anniversary special air? The special will air on February 16 from 8 to 11 p.m. Et on NBC. Who will host the celebration? The network has not announced a host for the 50th anniversary special. However, prior anniversary specials did not feature a designated host. In 1989, for the 15th anniversary special, there were many tributes and performances from some of the show’s original stars — including Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, and more. Then, for the 25th in 1999, the cold open featured Bill Murray addressing an audience full of A-listers, with Chris Rock delivering the opening monologue and additional performances from the likes of Adam Sandler, Christopher Walken, and Tom Hanks,...

One of Jesse Eisenberg‘s most memorable leading ladies gave him a run for his money before even landing the role.
After 15 years, the Zombieland actor recalled how co-star Emma Stone wowed the casting director and left him feeling “so, so small” during her audition for the 2009 Ruben Fleischer-directed post-apocalyptic comedy.
“I was already cast in the movie, so I was auditioning like many people for her part that day,” he recounted on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. “The actors at that point were all amazing actresses, but they were all, like, trying to get into the movie, and so they were being really polite and everything.
“And then [Stone] came in, and she just started making fun of me in the scene, like just assaulting me with insults in the scene and it was so funny. They were so quick and so funny and cutting,” added Eisenberg.

Ernie Hudson seems to have a love-hate relationship with the entire Ghostbusters series, acknowledging its significance in his career but also recognizing that the studio crossed the streams when it came to promoting the movies. But one aspect that shines above the rest is his admiration for Peter Venkman himself, Bill Murray, who he recognizes helped him star onboard for the 1989 sequel.
Appearing at the Rhode Island Comic Con over the weekend (via People), Ernie Hudson remembered that his casting in Ghostbusters II wasn’t exactly a guarantee. “Bill Murray is the only actor I think I’ve ever worked with who when they tried to get him to do another [Ghostbusters] — remember it was about 20 years before we came back with another movie after the second movie. But Bill just basically said, ‘If Ernie Hudson’s not in it, I’m not doing it.’ There are not many people...

Aziz Ansari’s (belated) directorial debut Good Fortune will land in 2025, with Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen leading the cast. More here.
Lionsgate has announced a release date for Good Fortune, the upcoming Aziz Ansari comedy that brings a promising cast together with a fun premise for the actor’s long overdue directorial debut. The Parks & Recreation star has been in the frame to direct his first film for some time, and began production on a feature that was ultimately scrapped.
None of that was Ansari’s fault however. Here’s a quick recap: back in 2023, Ansari was in the midst of production on Being Mortal, a comedy movie he was directing for Searchlight Pictures. During production, an accusation was made about Bill Murray’s on-set conduct which ended up shutting production down. The film never got going again and was ultimately scrapped. As debuts go, that’s a...

14 The First Cast Member
Big names like Chevy Chase, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd have gotten more press over the years, but Gilda Radner was the first person Lorne Michaels added to the roster. She tragically passed away in 1989.

There needs to be a new wing in Saturday Night Live‘s Five-Timers Club, that exclusive lounge reserved for comedians who’ve proven so funny that they’ve been asked to host the show five times or more. That new room would be reserved for the five people who not only hosted five times but delivered several standout seasons as cast members as well. In addition to the smoking jacket, maybe Lorne Michaels could pop for slippers and a silver cigarette holder as well — something to signify that these Five-Timers are a cut above.
Here are the five Five-Timers who were also superstars in the show’s cast…

Bill Murray’s past arrest for attempting to smuggle marijuana on a plane (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
Let’s rewind to September 21, 1970. Bill Murray had just hit the big 2-0, and instead of basking in birthday glory, he stumbled into a comedy of errors at O’Hare International Airport. After a cozy family birthday bash in Chicago, young Bill was ready to jet off to Denver for some serious pre-med studies at Regis College. But instead of focusing on anatomy, he made a joke that would turn his birthday into a legendary fiasco.
While waiting to board, Murray casually told a fellow passenger that he was carrying “two bombs” in his suitcase and joking, right? Wrong! A nearby ticket agent didn’t see the punchline and called in U.S. marshals faster than you can say “Groundhog Day.” When they rifled through his luggage, they didn’t find explosives but rather...

When Fantastic Mr. Fox premiered in 2009, Wes Anderson’s quirky adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s book won audiences over with its unique stop-motion animation and all-star cast. With George Clooney as the voice of the titular character, Meryl Streep playing his wife, and even Bill Murray and more in the film, it wound up being a huge success.

Though the film went on to be known for its humor, charm, and artistic style, it ended up being one of Clooney’s most underrated roles. However, Anderson believed that was only because fans had missed one message that was deeply relevant: the importance of working together for a common good.

One of the most common complaints about latter-day Saturday Night Live is that the cast is too big. That problem gets compounded when SNL enlists multiple people to host at the same time.
How does the show handle that juggling act? As you’ll see below, not very well — when it comes to hosting, less is usually more.
Check out these five examples of two people fighting for stage time while hosting Saturday Night Live…
1 The Olsen Twins Play
The early aughts might have been apex creepy at SNL. Shows featured teenage guests from Lindsay Lohan to Britney Spears to Sarah Michelle Gellar getting hit on by older male cast members under the guise of comedy, while Horatio Sanz was allegedly doing the same thing to fans.
The Olsen Twins episode in 2004 was no exception. Their opening monologue, understandably scrubbed from the Peacock version, features the 17-year-olds complaining about missing prom.

Quentin Tarantino loves bastards, inglorious or otherwise. And the worst thing a movie can do, in his opinion, is redeem those a-holes.
“If you make a movie about a fucking bastard, you could bet that fucking bastard would see the error of their ways and be redeemed in the last 20 minutes,” Tarantino writes in his book of essays, Cinema Speculation. “Like, for example, all of Bill Murray’s characters.”
Whoa — what did Murray’s cinematic smart-asses do to catch the back of Tarantino’s hand?
The same thing countless other comedy characters have done throughout movie history: Start out irresponsible and reckless, then learn a few lessons over the course of the story to become a better person.

In the 1982 comedy classic Tootsie, Teri Garr plays Sandy Lester, a struggling actress and close friend of Dustin Hoffman’s Michael Dorsey. Between her chosen profession and her many bad choices in men, she has been conditioned to be life’s doormat. In an early scene, she vents that she was trapped in Michael’s bathroom for a half-hour during a party while no one noticed, then admits that, yes, everyone seems to be having a good time. Later, when Michael stands her up for a dinner date, she somehow winds up apologizing to him.

Coulda shoulda woulda — when it comes to breakthrough ‘80s comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, there’s a murderers’ row of comedians who might have taken on the lead role that eventually went to Bob Hoskins. Robin Williams, Wallace Shawn and Sylvester Stallone were reportedly considered to play beleaguered private dick Eddie Valiant, but two comedy superstars in particular wished they’d thought twice about taking the job: Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy.
According to director Robert Zemeckis on the film’s DVD commentary, he and producer Steven Spielberg had Murray at the very top of their list to play Eddie. There was only one problem — neither man knew how to get hold of the Ghostbusters star. That’s not surprising for those familiar with Murray legend. The comedian doesn’t employ an agent or manager; he instead uses an unlisted 800 number to collect his messages. Sometimes (like when Sofia Coppola...

Uncovering the Original Dark Script of ‘Ghostbusters’: How a Grimmer Vision Evolved into the Beloved Comedy Classic! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
“Ghostbusters” went from a dark, ambitious script to a comedic classic that’s haunted our hearts since ‘84. When Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis teamed up to create this film, they tapped into Aykroyd’s deep-seated fascination with the paranormal. Growing up in a family with a history steeped in spiritualism, Aykroyd was practically destined to explore the ghostly unknown. His great-grandfather hosted séances, and his upbringing was rich with tales of the supernatural.
Originally titled Ghost Smashers, Aykroyd’s vision was wild, sprawling across multiple dimensions and brimming with supernatural phenomena. Picture this: an open portal unleashing ghosts on Earth, leading to various teams of “ghost smashers” battling for supremacy. 2013's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is widely regarded as a box office disappointment, if not an outright flop, but a new report reveals that the MCU threequel actually did turn a small - and we mean small - profit.
The third Ant-Man movie had a reported budget of around $200 million (before marketing costs), and ended up taking in $476 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. Analysts predicted that the movie would need to pass the $500 million mark just to break even, but not according to Forbes.
"The super hero flick debuted in February last year to a lukewarm reception and only grossed $476.07 million according to industry analyst Box Office Mojo. Studios typically receive around 50% of the takings meaning that Disney got around $238.05 million which was $92.05 million less than its net spending on making the movie, as we recently revealed."
Apparently, Quantumania earned a profit of $88,236 after expenses were factored in.

Teri Garr, beloved actress and comic of stage and screen, is dead at the age of 79. In the last decades of her life, she became an inspirational figure for those, like her, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, tirelessly working to raise awareness of the disease as a frequent speaker at the annual Race to Erase Ms events.
As much as as she inspired people in her last years, she made people smile and laugh throughout her four-decade career on stage and screen as one of the funniest actresses of her generation, in films such as “Young Frankenstein” and “Tootsie.” She was one of the harder-working people in show business, coming up via true bit parts: She was a background dancer in 1964 teen-focused concert film “The T.A.M.I. Few Asian actresses boast the footing that Lucy Liu has achieved during her time in Hollywood. An American actress of Chinese descent, it has not been easy for her to reach the position she is in now, thanks to the many Asian stereotypes present in the West and the film industry’s fake ‘woke culture’.
Lucy Liu | Credit: Elementary / CBS
Often portraying a reality that is so unlike actual life, Hollywood has constructed its own flawed reality when it comes to representing Asians. But at the same time, it is rooted in the deep history of stereotypes and prejudices the West has long harbored against the ‘Other’ people. And one person who has worked vehemently to change the narrative and criticized the film industry’s superficiality is Lucy Liu.

One of the only bad things about attending a festival like TIFF is that so many great-looking movies play that it’s too easy to miss more than a few. One of the movies I tried hardest to fit into my schedule – to no avail – was The Friend, starring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray. Directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the film is an adaptation of a book by Sigrid Nunez that focuses on a woman trying to come to terms with the death of her friend and mentor. Complicating matters is that the woman’s also been left custody of her deceased friend’s beloved Great Dane, an unwieldy pet for her tiny New York apartment.
While it earned very solid reviews at TIFF, it wasn’t one of the films that got snapped up right away for distribution. However, Bleecker Street has now stepped in to acquire The Friend,...

The fall festival season has wrapped up! Each year, dozens of movies premiere at festivals with distributors looking to launch them before they’re released in theaters or on streaming services. But dozens more are independent films without distribution that came to the festivals looking to be discovered. This year, over 200 movies made their world premieres across the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival, and we’ve seen some big name movie sales across all four.
Right as Venice got underway, we saw U.S. deals for two of the biggest competition titles on the slate, Pablo Larraín’s “Maria” to Netflix and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” to A24. A24 also picked up the rights to Venice Silver Lion winner “The Brutalist” in a competitive situation. And some of the hottest discoveries like “Nutcrackers,” “September 5,” and TIFF Audience...

Bleecker Street has taken North American rights to the Scott McGehee and David Siegel directed and written feature, The Friend, starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray and a Great Dane named Bing. A 2025 theatrical release is planned.
The film marks Bleecker Street’s second collaboration with Siegel & McGehee, having handled the US release of their 2021 neo-Western drama Montana Story, starring Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague.
In The Friend, writer and teacher Iris (Watts) finds her comfortable, solitary New York life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor (Murray) dies suddenly and bequeaths her his beloved 150 lb. Great Dane. The regal yet intractable beast, named Apollo, immediately creates practical problems for Iris, from furniture destruction to eviction notices, as well as more existential ones, his looming presence constantly reminding her of her friend’s problematic choices in both life and death. Yet as Iris finds herself unexpectedly bonding with the animal,...

Naomi Watts and a very big dog are heading to cinemas.
“The Friend,” a touching drama about a writer and editor whose literary mentor commits suicide and leaves her with his Great Dane to care for, has been acquired by Bleecker Street. The indie studio has nabbed North American distribution rights for an undisclosed sum — the sale took some time, which is something of a surprise given that “The Friend” received strong reviews when it showed at fall film festivals like Telluride and Toronto. It’s another reminder that studios are being more cautious when it comes to buying projects post-covid. The indie and arthouse theatrical market is still struggling to fully rebound from pandemic disruptions.
“The Friend” was written and directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the team behind “The Deep End” and “What Maisie Knew,” and co-stars Bill Murray, Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Noma Dumezweni and Ann Dowd.
