- Margaux's sister Mariel stated, "She was found with her legs propped up on a pillow, with a book in her lap. That does not sound like someone who committed suicide. The coroner said the same thing. Also, my sister was somewhat a drama queen. If she had committed suicide, she would have left a note, a long note naming everyone who had ever wronged her.".
- Sister Mariel Hemingway, while appearing on Larry King Live (1985) on CNN, stated publicly that Margaux did not commit suicide. She said that the original coroner reported that Margaux most likely died of an epileptic seizure. (July 11, 2001)
- She was found dead in her Santa Monica apartment on the 35th anniversary of the suicide of her grandfather, Ernest Hemingway, whose father, brother, and sister also committed suicide. Margaux had taken an overdose of Klonopin, a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and some types of epileptic seizures.

D'Abo believed that Hemingway was cast solely because of her name, and she could've been a good actress if she'd had formal training. She also believed that Hemingway's death was accidental, not suicide. She remembered Hemingway as a sweet, vulnerable and caring friend, a woman who may have been injured by a too early brush with the limelight but was not destroyed by it, someone who struggled to overcome her disappointment and find meaning in the ordinary events of her life.

- Mariel went on to say that it was three weeks after Margaux's death that it was announced that she had committed suicide, and that the press most likely said this because it "made for a better story." Mariel had ironically enough played the owner of the Daily Planet (a newspaper) in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987).
