Janice Was Nearly Cut from Friends After Season 1 (Photo Credit – YouTube)
Sitcoms have a way of becoming pop culture touchstones, and Friends was no exception. Running for ten iconic seasons became a 90s phenomenon, catapulting its cast to A-list fame and solidifying its place in television history. While the main six characters were undoubtedly the stars, many guest appearances, like Janice, left an indelible mark. Janice’s signature laugh and catchphrase, “Oh my God,” became iconic—so much so that she almost didn’t make it past season one!
Maggie Wheeler, the brilliant actress behind Janice, revealed in a recent interview with Uproxx that her character was nearly written off after the first season. So, what kept her coming back? It all boiled down to the genius of Matthew Perry and a laugh that became legendary. “I needed a safety net because he was hilarious,” Wheeler explained, referring to the...

Matthew Perry at the top of his fame found worldwide love and critical acclaim as Chandler Bing in the iconic American sitcom Friends. The actor also found pressure, a need to be good, and anxiety.

During the earlier seasons, Perry’s character was shown as addicted to cigarettes. Whether that was intentional or not, Matthew Perry struggled with drug use and even visited rehab to get clean. A new claim by Kelly Osbourne seems to be related to a deeper conspiracy in this rehab business!
Capitalism Might Have Cost Matthew Perry His Life
Greed, the drive for money, and the extent to which people are willing to go is a rabbit hole that most people choose to overlook. However, when these conspiracies are exposed, the cost of lies (thank you Chernobyl) becomes too big to count.

First impressions are everything — except when they’re not. While most sitcoms that struggle in their first season get the ax, there have been occasions when a network is so invested in the success of a star or a concept that they give it another shot after retooling things. Sometimes they ditch a few characters or switch the location; other times they go so far as to change the name of the show. Then they put it back out into the world and hope everyone forgets about the original incarnation.
Here are seven such shows that were retooled after (or during) their first season, with notably mixed results…
7 Ellen
Ellen DeGeneres’ mid-1990s ABC sitcom was a modest success. Its first season, though, was very different from those that would follow. For starters, it was called These Friends of Mine instead of Ellen. And a couple of those friends (played...

Well, Friends star Maggie Wheeler, who portrayed the role of Janice Hosenstein in the show, owes her iconic catchphrase to Perry’s antics. If it weren’t for Matthew Perry, the world may never have heard the catchphrase ‘Oh My God’.
How Matthew Perry Helped Maggie Wheeler With Her Catchphrase
Believe it or not, the catchphrase ‘Oh My God’ said by Janice throughout the entirety of Friends wasn’t scripted. It was the result of improvisation, trying not to laugh, and, Matthew Perry’s comedy.

New Girl is definitely one of the most heartwarmingly funny series about friends and love created by Elizabeth Meriwether. The Fox comedy series follows the chirpy and naive Jessica as she moves into a loft with 3 guys who are equally as quirky and weird. New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Damon Wayans Jr., Nasim Pedrad, and Megan Fox. Friends is a beloved sitcom that has carved a place in the hearts of a whole generation of millennials, and why wouldn’t it? It’s a treasure trove of comedy, wholesomeness, and spot-on punchlines that are guaranteed to put you out of even the worst Monday blues.
Friends | NBC
Each character was bestowed with their own trademark, of sorts. Monica was the clean freak, Joey’s flirty “How you doin” is still a classic pickup, and Rachel was the spoiled but brave friend. Then there’s Ross, the clumsy nerd, and Chandler Bing, the funnyman.
But you know who else was a good character (and you realize this especially when you’re on your umpteenth rerun of the show)? Janice Hosenstein. Yup, her.
The (Seemingly) Most Irritating Friends Character
A drama queen whose scream would put even a banshee to shame, Janice is the quintessential ex who everyone hates but is forced to tolerate.

John Stamos revealed on Instagram in the wake of Matthew Perry’s death that the late “Friends” star came to his aid during an embarrassing trip to the set of the NBC sitcom. Stamos made a surprise cameo on “Friends” in 2003 during the show’s ninth season. He played Zach, Chandler’s co-worker who is courted to be a potential sperm donor for Monica and Chandler. The couple invite Zach over to their apartment for dinner to assess his physical and emotional attributes.
“Matthew and I had been friendly long before ‘Friends,’ so when I guest starred as Zach, the prospective sperm donor for Chandler and Monica, I hung with him a lot,” Stamos remembered about filming the episode. “Standing backstage, ready to make my entrance, Matt whispers, ‘The audience is going go crazy when they see you! Get ready for some loud screams.’ I walk through the door… silence.

“He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words,” they continued. “From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.

Late in the eighth season of “Friends,” Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) comes storming into her old apartment, upset and concerned. Joey (Matt LeBlanc) has just confessed he’s in love with her, she’s told him she doesn’t feel the same way, and now the two are stuck in an awkward cycle of avoidance. Chandler (Matthew Perry), being the only one there, tries to comfort her, but his broad assurances aren’t convincing, and when challenged, all he can muster is a light joke. “I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”
That line stuck with a lot of people who watched “Friends,” and thus, it stuck with a lot of people. For one, it’s extremely relatable — not knowing what to say when a friend is hurting — but the moment also seemed to define Chandler as a character, and, to some extent,...

Tributes poured in from all corners of Hollywood when the news came of Matthew Perry’s death at age 54 on Saturday. The actor, best known for starring as Chandler Bing in “Friends,” was found dead in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles.
Many of the sentiments posted online Saturday pointed to Perry as the heart of the humor in “Friends.” As written in a tribute by Variety‘s chief correspondent Daniel D’Addario, “the character’s caustic wit, as performed by a master comic actor, presented as nothing more and nothing less than observational humor about his friends: One degree harsher and it would have tanked the show, one degree softer and it wouldn’t have landed.”
Several also referenced Perry’s struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction, which he discussed publicly throughout his career, especially in his memoir “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”

If your TV heart belongs to Friends, then you know the Central Perk gang rarely missed a chance to celebrate a holiday. The 1994–2004 sitcom’s Valentine’s Day-themed episodes don’t get the same love and attention as the Thanksgiving classics, but they’re still worth a watch — especially while you’re single. Though the NBC comedy is no longer streaming on Netflix — it is available to binge on HBO Max. In honor of the romantic holiday, we’re rounding up the best Valentine’s Day-themed episodes from the fan-favorite, below. 1. “The One With the Candy Hearts” Oh. My. Gawd. Meanwhile, the girls’ boyfriend bonfire — which kooky Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) suggests for “spiritual cleansing” — goes up in flames in the apartment. Hello, cute firefighters! After so many years — and episode re-watches — could there Be anything left to learn about “Friends”?
As the highly-anticipated, almost two-hour reunion special for HBO Max shows (and with apologies to Matthew Perry for continuing to borrow his lines), “Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes.”
One thing that we didn’t need to learn (because we already knew it) was just how truly there these six characters were for the audience. In the 1990s and early-aughts, the cast of “Friends” provided hours of joy — first just on Thursday nights when new episodes aired, but soon enough five nights a week in syndication. Within the past decade, diehard and casual fans alike could spend any time of any day with Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Perry and David Schwimmer, as the show became available on streaming services. This sextet has helped their audience get through so much, now including the Covid-19 pandemic.

Back in the day, this would have been a nice touch as Bonus Feature on a Collector's Edition DVD set. In the streaming era, when right marketing can trend just about anything that can be dropped on Ott, the pop hysteria about "Friends" renders reason enough for an event release. The hype about the special seemed obvious pre-release.
"Friends: The Reunion" was never really meant to reload the hysteria. The purpose was always to remind the world that the hysteria still exists. Seventeen years after the original series ended its decade's run, the reunion special was essentially aimed at reiterating the fact that nostalgia around the series is still intact.
Creators Kevin S. Bright, David Crane and Marta Kauffman have wisely gone for an unscripted format, aware perhaps that no amount of smart storywriting could create an episode that would let them avoid comparisons with an original series that continues to draw overwhelming sentimental appeal.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for “Friends: The Reunion”
For a special that was filmed and edited much faster than most are, “Friends: The Reunion” managed to bring in a lot of fan-favorites, either in person or via Zoom. That said, there were still some notable absences, like Phoebe’s husband Mike, played by Paul Rudd, and Ross’ son Ben, played by Cole Sprouse. So why weren’t those two involved?
“Well, we couldn’t have everybody on, because it’s only an hour and 45 minutes. And you’ve got to pay attention — the main nub of the show has got to be about the six cast members,” Ben Winston, director of the HBO Max reunion special, told TheWrap. “So you can’t have too many cameos because of course, there were hundreds of amazing people who were in ‘Friends’ over the years. Sadly, we couldn’t get everybody in.

The long-awaited and highly-anticipated Friends reunion special is hitting HBO Max (where all 236 episodes of the hit series are currently available for streaming) on Thursday, May 27! Hosted by James Corden, the episode marks the first time all six cast members will be sharing a screen in the 17 years since the show wrapped! A slew of the sitcom’s best-loved guest stars will be popping by to join in the fun, as well, including Reese Witherspoon, Tom Selleck and Maggie Wheeler (cue the “Oh my Gods!”). Justin Bieber, who was a wee six months old when the pilot aired, is also (inexplicably) making an appearance.
