Few shows have had the staying power of The Dick Van Dyke Show. Premiering on October 3, 1961, and wrapping up in ‘66, unlike most shows that end due to low ratings, this one simply concluded because the cast was ready to move on to fresher pastures.

With such a talented team, it made sense to spread the creativity around. Even 10-year-old Larry Mathews, who played Ritchie, was already looking ahead to his next big break. There were no big speeches or tearful goodbyes on the final day of filming. Instead, the cast spent their last moments together cracking jokes, recording tracks, and trading one-liners.
Created by comedy legend Carl Reiner, the series saw the incomparable Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore bring performances to life that won the show 15 Emmy Awards in a five-season run. But what happened to...

Dick Van Dyke is a Hollywood legend. But he’s not the only entertainer in the family. The Mary Poppins star – who turned 98 on Dec. 13, 2023 – has four kids and multiple grandchildren. Several followed in their dad and granddad’s footsteps with careers both on and behind the screen.

Dick Van Dyke married his first wife Margie Willet in 1948 on an episode of the radio show Bride and Groom. Their first child, Christian, was born in 1950. In 1962, Christian appeared in an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show as a kid named Frankie. But Christian didn’t catch the acting bug. Rather than pursuing a career in Hollywood, he went to law school. He moved to Oregon, where he served as a district attorney and worked...

Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a great holiday weekend (or regular weekend for those of you outside of the States). We’re back today with a brand new round-up of horror and sci-fi home media releases that are headed home today, and it includes quite the array of titles. One of my favorite movies of the year - Everything Everywhere All At Once from The Daniels - is being released to 4K as well as Blu-ray and DVD and if you’re looking to indulge in even more 4K entertainment, Edge of Tomorrow is also getting the 4K treatment, too.
Kino Lorber is keeping busy this week with an array of classic titles headed to Blu, including Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo, Ants! (aka It Happened at Lakewood Manor) and Terror Out of the Sky (aka Revenge of the Savage Bees), and IFC is also releasing Ruth Paxton’s...

Listen I have nothing against ants – rubber tree plants, veracity, etc – but put enough of them together and I get nervous. Radiate them? You get the big ass ones in Them! (1954). Delve into cosmic circumstance and you have the smarty pants overlords of Phase IV (1974). Throw a bunch on the television, make them poisonous and you end up with The Love Boat meets The Towering Inferno goofiness of Robert Scheerer’s It Happened at Lakewood Manor (1977), a pretty silly and damn entertaining TV flick.
Aka Ants! upon rebroadcasting and future home video release, It Happ – screw it; let’s just call it Ants! okay? It’s a more fun and less pretentious title (which this thing is anything but), and to the point. Okay, Ants! originally aired December 2nd as part of The ABC Friday Night Movie, and it’s competition was The Incredible Hulk on CBS, while NBC trotted...

Sandwiched between Star Wars and Star Trek: The Motion Picture in the heyday of late 1970’s sci-fi entertainment was Battlestar Galactica. The show pitted Cylons against the crew of the Galactica for 24 episodes before being followed by Galactica 1980, and fans of the franchise should be pleased to hear that Universal is releasing both series on two separate Blu-ray releases—each with a bunch of bonus features:
(Press release via TVShowsOnDVD.com.) “Universal City, Calif., Nov. 24, 2014 – From renowned writer/producer Glen A. Larson, the creative force behind Knight Rider, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, comes the groundbreaking TV series that launched one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises in history, now available in widescreen and high definition as both Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection and Battlestar Galactica: The Remastered Collection come to Blu-ray on May 12, 2015 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

In new that pleases me greatly (what? I’m a fan of this Canadian iteration of the series), Universal Studios Home Entertainment have announced the Us release of Airwolf – Season 4, the much-maligned final season of the TV show that was shot on video in Canada after the original stars left the series.
Airwolf – Season 4 stars Barry Van Dyke (Diagnosis: Murder) as the long-missing brother of Jan Michael Vincent’s character, Michele Scarabelli (TV’s Alien Nation), Geraint Wyn Davies (24, Forever Knight), Anthony Sherwood (Street Legal) and in a recurring role William B. Davis (The X-Files).
Airwolf – Season 4 is released on Region 1 DVD on February 1st 2011.

It's always fun to see classic TV show characters pop up -- if it's handled well. The appearance of Carol (Marcia Wallace) from The Bob Newhart Show as one of the secretaries on Murphy Brown comes to mind as one that was well done.
In the 1990s, Dick Van Dyke starred in a medical mystery series that also featured Barry Van Dyke, Victoria Rowell, Scott Baio, Charlie Schlatter, Michael Tucci, and Delores Hall. Over the course of its run, Diagnosis: Murder reunited lots of classic TV show actors and resurrected several characters as well.
One of the strangest is from the last episode of season five, called "Obsession, Part Two." In the May 14, 1998 installment, Dr. Mark Sloan is visiting a radio station early in the morning and might not be quite awake yet. He briefly stumbles onto Rob Petrie from The...

Van Dyke stumbles on 'Murder 101'
Hallmark Channel will bring back Dick Van Dyke to the small screen in an occasional mystery movie series that will debut in January. Murder 101 will star Van Dyke, star of The Dick Van Dyke Show and more recently Diagnosis: Murder, as well as his son and former co-star, Barry Van Dyke. Dick Van Dyke will play a criminology professor who is less than brilliant when it comes to everyday tasks though incredibly smart when it comes to solving crimes. "He bumbles through life not knowing where his keys are, but when he gets involved in a case his mind is a steel trap," said David Kenin, executive vp programming at Los Angeles-based Hallmark Channel, at the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour Saturday at the Beverly Hilton. Kenin was joined by Dick Van Dyke and several actors and actresses who will appear in upcoming Hallmark Channel projects.
