In January of 2021, Megan Ellison got a call from Erik Lomis, the former head of distribution at her company, Annapurna Pictures, asking if she’d like to take a look at a movie whose filmmakers needed a lifeline. Disney was days away from announcing that it planned to shutter Blue Sky Studios, the 500-person, Greenwich, Connecticut-based animation studio it had inherited in the 2019 Fox acquisition, and with that closure, the Burbank media giant would be dropping Blue Sky’s most promising movie, Nimona.
“I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time, but being curious, I said yes,” Ellison said, in an email.
Ellison watched the hand-drawn storyboard reels, which directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane had adapted from Nd Stevenson’s 2015 graphic novel, and instantly connected with the title character, a shape-shifter voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz who appears most often as a young woman, but...

Freda Black, the former assistant district attorney who was featured in the documentary series “The Staircase,” has died at the age of 57.
According to the News & Observer, Black was found dead in her North Carolina home over the weekend. No cause of death has been made public, though law enforcement told the paper that her death “does not appear to be suspicious at this point.”
A Durham County assistant district attorney from the early 1990s until 2005, Black was part of the team that helped convict Michael Peterson for murder following the 2001 death of his wife.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for the Netflix series “The Staircase,” so you might want to finish it before reading on.)
One of the key figures in the long-running case of Michael Peterson in “The Staircase” is Duane Deaver, a blood spatter analyst who worked for North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation in 2002 when the case went to trial.
Deaver’s expert testimony is a major part of what lead to Peterson’s conviction for the murder of his wife, Kathleen Peterson, in 2001. The blood spatter expert insists in “The Staircase” that the patterns seen in the staircase of the Peterson home were the result of Kathleen Peterson being beaten to death. Though Peterson maintained his innocence and the defense presented blood spatter experts of its own, the jury convicted Peterson of first-degree murder in 2003, and sentenced him to life in prison.

This Week’s Must Read is actually a few weeks old, but I’ve been skipping these links posts a lot. Anyway… The Brooklyn Rail got a bunch of big names, such as P. That legacy, of course, can never be summed up in just one article, but this is good.Media artist Clint Enns interviewed media artist Sabrina Ratté about her working process. Clint’s probably one of the most insightful people regarding our world of experimental media I know, so this is a must read.Filmmaker Magazine interviewed one of our favorite underground comedy directors, Zach Clark, about his new Christmas movie White Reindeer, which, of course, we’re dying to see.Our pal J.J. It seems like just yesterday that Adam Green's artful use of Internet marketing heralded the arrival of Hatchet, its mock trailer offering the promise of a back-to-basics slasher trumpeted as the return of 'old school American horror' with some of the genre's most respected icons.
Jump forward six years to present day, and a hungry Hatchet fan base are looking forward to the imminent release of the third chapter, testament to the widespread appeal of Victor Crowley, Green's gloriously old school, axe-wielding creation. Foregoing some much needed sleep to speak with us, the filmmaker gracefully sat down to talk of the second season of his and fellow genre director Joe Lynch’s horror comedy sitcom "Holliston" (Blu-ray / DVD review here), his producing gig on Hatchet III, and his scribe duties on the upcoming Chris Columbus-produced kids’ monster-fantasy Killer Pizza. Although his last few directorial projects have been mediocre at best, Chris Columbus continues to be a force for cool family entertainment in Hollywood. Recently he helped shepherd a deal at MGM that finds them landing the rights to Killer Pizza, a script written by Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen) based on the young adult book by Greg Taylor. The story is said to have a Gremlins and Goonies-type vibe, and Chris Columbus should know -- after all, he wrote the original screenplays for both of those films. Raffaella De Laurentiis (The Forbidden Kingdom, Dragonheart) will produce along with Columbus, who is setting it up through his own 1492 Pictures. The plot is described as follows: "Toby McGill dreams of becoming a world-famous chef, but up until now, his only experience has been watching the Food Network. Adam Green (Hatchet) has written a script based on author Greg Taylor’s Killer Pizza, and MGM is in the process of acquiring it, with plans for a film adaptation. According to Deadline, Chris Columbus took the project to MGM, who have been looking for something along the lines of Gremlins and Goonies.
Adam Green mentioned on his Facebook page that Chris Columbus will serve as producer. Although not confirmed, it sounds like Green will be directing if MGM moves forward with Killer Pizza:
“…I thought I’d point out that last year at this exact time I was barricaded up at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas (where I often lock myself away to write) working on the first draft of the script. Serendipity? We’ll see how it all pans out but I’ve got high hopes for this project and the process so far has been a joy.

Adam Green (Frozen) has scripted an adaptation of Greg Taylor's young adult novel Killer Pizza, about a 14-year old who gets a summer job at a pizza place that is a front for a monster hunting outfit. Now MGM has picked up the script -- the latest buy from the revamped studio that has bought the Eminem boxing film [1] Southpaw and the rights [2] to Where's Waldo? More details below. Deadline [3] says that Chris Columbus brought the novel to the attention of MGM after he sensed that MGM execs had an "appetite for Gremlins and Goonies-type fare." Columbus' company, 1492 Entertainment, will produce with Cj Entertainment. Green was attached to direct [4] the film last year, but whether that will continue to be the case is unknown. MGM, fresh off news that they’ll be adapting the not-so-fresh kid’s book franchise Where’s Waldo?, is in talks with low-budget horror auteur Adam Green (the filmmaker behind little-seen schlockers like Hatchet and Frozen) to produce Killer Pizza, an adaptation of the quite-lesser-known-than-Where’s Waldo? MGM is picking up Killer Pizza , the script Adam Green penned based on the novel by Greg Taylor. The film follows a teen who takes a gig at the eponymous pizza delivery joint which is really a cover for a monster hunting organization. Cj Entertainment and Chris Columbus' 1492 Entertainment will produce with Rafaella De Laurentiis. Green was first attached to the property in early 2010. Columbus brought Green's script to the studio which, according to Deadline , was looking for "'Gremlins' and 'Goonies'-type fare." Green, who directed Frozen and the "Hatchet" films, has a segment in the upcoming Chillerama , hitting DVD later this month.

Adam Green is set to direct the new film with an interesting title Killer Pizza. And that’s not all, he will also be in charge for the script, that will be based on the Greg Taylor novel.
We guess this is wonderful news for all horror fans out there, since we all know that Green is writer and director of the horror film Hatchet and forthcoming sequel Hatchet 2, so is there better guy for this pizza-adaptation? Definitely no…
The official description from the book goes like this: “Pizza you’ll die for! Toby McGill dreams of becoming a world-famous chef, but up until now, his only experience has been watching the Food Network.
When Toby lands a summer job at Killer Pizza, where pies like The Monstrosity and The Frankensausage are on the menu, things seem perfect. His coworkers, Annabel and Strobe, are cool, and Toby loves being part of a team.

Heat Vision is reporting that Chris Columbus' 1492 Pictures and South Korean media company Cj Entertainment are coming on board to help produce an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Newberry Medal-winning young-adult novel "The Graveyard Book."
The book centers on a young boy raised in a graveyard and educated by ghosts.
Neil Jordan is writing the script and will direct the live-action movie.
The project has seen its financing come and go but is back from the dead thanks to 1492 and Cj's involvement. Cj also will co-finance "Graveyard" and distribute the pic in Korea and Japan.
They will also be producing these projects as well:
"Killer Pizza": The action-packed, coming-of-age comedy is about a 14-year-old boy who lands a summer job at Killer Pizza -- where such pies as the Monstrosity and the Frankensausage are on the menu -- but quickly learns it's a front for a monster-hunting organization.

Hatchet/Frozen helmer Adam Green will direct a big screen adaptation of Greg Taylor's young adult novel Killer Pizza for Chris Columbus' 1492 Pictures. The action comedy tells the story of a 14-year-old who gets a summer job at Killer Pizza, which turns out to be a front for a monster-hunting organization. What excites me most about this film is that it sounds like the kind of films that Columbus was creating in the 1980's Amblin era of Gremlins and The Goonies. Also, while I have yet to see Green's Hatchet, I was impressed with his contained three person single-location thriller Frozen, which premiered at Sundance. Here is the official description from the book: Pizza you’ll die for! Toby McGill dreams of becoming a world-famous chef, but up until now, his only experience has been watching the Food Network. Now this is something we are looking forward to. Based off the Greg Taylor novel "Killer Pizza", director and horror mastermind Adam Green will be adapting and directing this off-beat horror comedy...
What is "Killer Pizza" all about? It's a comedy about a 14-year old who lands a summer job at a pizza joint which serves pizza pies like The Monstrosity and The Frankensausage, but is actually a front for a monster-hunting organization. Sounds like more than good times and for those of you that have read the book you know what kind of madness is in-store. This is truly a perfect film in our eyes for director Adam Green and one that we can't wait to her more about.

Chris Columbus, savior of a lost genre? You snicker, but it may very well be the case.
In these pages we have long lamented the loss of the 1980's style kids horror and fantasy film, the unique subgenre of films that made most of us into film geeks in the first place and a genre that was effectively killed by a single rule change when the MPAA tightened up ratings on films that featured kids in peril and / or kids swearing. Thanks to that one move, any future films along the lines of Goonies or Gremlins would no longer be accessible to their target audience and so producers simply stopped making them.
In the world of this sort of film no company loomed larger than Amblin Entertainment and in the world of Amblin the key writer was Chris Columbus. Before he turned to directing with 1987's Adventures In Babysitting Columbus...
