Richard Curtis may be a rom-com staple auteur, but that doesn’t mean the writer/director thinks all his films belong on the nice list. Curtis, who makes his animated film debut with “That Christmas,” told IndieWire that another of his anthology Christmas films actually set the stage for his Netflix children’s feature: “Love Actually.”
While Curtis co-adapted “That Christmas” with Peter Souter from his own bestselling book series, it’s Simon Otto (“How to Train Your Dragon”) who directs (“I’m very much not number one here”); for “Love Actually,” Curtis pulled double duty back in 2003. Both films center on an ensemble cast with holiday-centric stories intersecting between characters. As Curtis told IndieWire, it was the “catastrophe” of editing “Love Actually” that helped bring “That Christmas” to the screen.
“The strange thing about ‘Love Actually’ is, when we finished the movie, it was a catastrophe,” Curtis said of...

Given the low bar for most contemporary Christmas movies – does someone wear a plaid shirt? That’ll do – and the desperate need for material that isn’t totally hackneyed, one can see the appeal of adapting some children’s books by Richard ‘Love Actually’ Curtis. The resulting British animation is a little disjointed and meandering at times, but it’s also genuinely touching and, thank Santa, better than all those formulaic romcoms.
The material is drawn from three storybooks Curtis wrote with illustrator Rebecca Cobb: ‘That Christmas’, ‘The Empty Stocking’ and ‘Snow Day’. We open with Brian Cox’s Santa Claus struggling to deliver presents through inclement weather, before flashing back to a few days earlier when things started to get difficult. There’s unrequited love at a school play, absent parents stuck in the snow, one good twin concerned that her naughty twin sister won’t get any presents,...

Melancholy Christmas songs are the best Christmas songs and Ed Sheeran sure seems to know it. His new holiday ballad, “Under the Tree,” longs for the one thing that St. Nick can’t bring him: the lover he has lost.
Sheeran wrote “Under the Tree” with Johnny McDaid for the upcoming animated film That Christmas, premiering on Netflix next month. The video for the song, released today, intersperses live-action Sheeran and his costar Claudia Jessie (Bridgerton) with animation from the movie. The pair play a couple no longer together, despite...

[This story contains major spoilers from the second and third episodes of Bad Sisters season two.]
The Bad Sisters fate of Grace, the eldest Garvey sister, in season two wasn’t an easy choice for creator and star Sharon Horgan.
The idea for her — spoiler alert! — death originated in the writers room, but was initially rejected for being too grim. Ultimately, her fate played out first in fragments at the end of episode two, when Grace gets into a car crash, and then expanded on in episode three, released on Wednesday, with Grace’s funeral.
“We had the idea about what would happen but then we dropped it, because we thought, ‘I don’t know if we can continue the tone of Bad Sisters with Grace dying.’ It felt too dark,” Horgan tells The Hollywood Reporter of the back and forth around Grace’s fate. “Then we ended up going back to it because we couldn’t really see a world where...

Emma Mackey is getting put in a mystery box.
The “Sex Education” and “Barbie” breakout is joining Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in lead roles in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Warner Bros. feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Details of Abrams’ first film since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” are being kept mysterious — all we really know about it is that it won’t involve time travel. It will be the box-office-dominating writer-director-producer’s first film not based on I.P. since 2011’s “Super 8.” Abrams’ company Bad Robot is producing.
Mackey is a rising star who made her debut in Netflix’s comedy series “Sex Education” in 2019. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her performance as entrepreneurial high school student Maeve Wiley in the hit series. She also appeared in “Barbie,” the biggest film of 2023, as Physicist Barbie, a role that played up her physical resemblance to Margot Robbie.

British actress Emma Mackey (“Barbie”) has landed the female lead opposite Glen Powell in J.J. Abrams’ forthcoming, untitled Warner Bros. movie.
Details about both Mackey’s role and the project in general are being kept under wraps. The film also stars Jenna Ortega.
Not much is known about Abrams’ new film except that it is not a time travel movie (as had been previously speculated) and that Abrams both wrote the script and will be directing. The project will be produced by Abrams and his production company Bad Robot.
Mackey, who first broke out with her role as Maeve Wiley on Netflix’s “Sex Education,” most recently starred in Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-winning “Barbie.” She is also the 2023 recipient of BAFTA’s Rising Star Award,
Other credits include playing famed novelist and poet Emily Brontë in Frances O’Connor’s Warner Bros drama “Emily,” and Kenneth Branagh’s “Death on the Nile.

Emma Mackey, the British actress best known for her work in Netflix’s Sex Education, has nabbed the female lead in J.J. Abrams’ untitled feature at Warner Bros.
The actress, who appeared as a Barbie in the studio’s billion-dollar grossing Barbie last year, will now join Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega in what is described as being a trifecta of leads.
Abrams wrote the script for the feature, whose logline and description is being kept in the mystery box. At one point it was speculated to involve time travel, but sources say that is not the case.
Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.
The project has been percolating for months (Powell signed on back in May) but is finally heading before cameras early next year.

Not everything needs a second season.
“Bad Sisters,” created by Sharon Horgan, Brett Baer, and Dave Finkel, and based on the Belgian series “Clan,” was one such series, neatly wrapping up the eponymous Garvey sisters’ story with ten episodes that premiered on Apple TV+ in 2022.
But of those many shows that should have left well enough alone, a rare few manage to pull off that second installment (if not more beyond that) with — if not resounding success, then aplomb. “Bad Sisters” didn’t need a second season, but Horgan and her team execute the near-impossible task of picking up, building out, and smartly continuing the story, even if Season 1 remains superior.
Season 2 catches up with the sisters — Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Eva (Horgan), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene), and Becka (Eve Hewson) — a few years after the other four planned to kill Grace’s husband, only for her to end up killing him herself.

The first season of Bad Sisters was a near-perfect whodunnit set across two timelines where the Garvey sisters plotted revenge against an abusive husband. Almost entirely self-contained, this BAFTA-winning first run resolved the story with a euphoric sense of justice and hard-won liberation. Despite the show's success, a follow-up was the last thing fans expected – so when the renewal was suddenly announced via Apple TV+, a new mystery came to light. Namely, how do you follow up that killer first season without tainting what's come before?
At first, it's business as usual in the opening scene, where we watch four of the Garveys dispose of a body before the show jumps back to reveal what's happened in the two years since we last visited Dublin. The sisters have moved on from the events of season one to varying degrees, but their lives take...

[This story contains major spoilers from Bad Sisters season one and the first two episodes of season two]
Following the success of the first season of Bad Sisters on Apple TV+, creator and star Sharon Horgan had the challenge of coming up with a fresh storyline.
In the first season, four of the five starring Garvey sisters plot different ways to kill John Paul (Claes Bang), the abusive husband of their sister, Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), only to have John Paul die at the hand of Grace herself. With that villain vanquished, Horgan still wanted season two to have the same kind of energy as well as the continued emotional pull for the audience toward the sisters.
“[I was] just thinking about how to give everyone the same level of entertainment and story and emotion, really. How to make it feel like the first season, but feel completely different as well. To keep the sort of DNA of the show,...

The “Bad Sisters” are back for a second round.
After a two-year time jump, the Garvey sisters were placed back under investigation when new evidence in the “accidental death” of Grace’s husband was revealed. The new trailer for “Bad Sisters” season 2 even hinted at a potential stabbing, another dead body and more secrets.
The BAFTA Award-winning series is executive produced by Sharon Horgan (who also stars as the oldest sister Eva Garvey), Faye Dorn and Clelia Mountford for Merman. Dearbhla Walsh also serves as an executive producer and director.
The first season of “Bad Sisters” earned two BAFTA Award wins, one for Best Drama Series and another for Best Supporting Actress for Duff. Additionally, the series won a Peabody and was nominated for four Emmy Awards.

I thoroughly enjoyed Season 1 of Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters… and at the same time, I didn’t see any need for it to continue with a Season 2.
The pitch-black comedy, centered around a tight-knit group of Irish sisters who all come under suspicion when one sister’s jerk of a husband ends up dead, was a morbid delight in its freshman run, powered by terrific performances and a bracing dose of gallows humor. But the story tied up so neatly in the end that a second season seemed unnecessary. Well, we’re getting one anyway — the first two episodes...

Fans are highly anticipating season two of “Bad Sisters,” which will start on November 13 on Apple TV+. It will explore the complicated lives of the Garvey sisters in greater depth. The dark comedy’s first two episodes will air on the first day of its run, and new episodes will air every week until December 23.
The new season picks up two years after the dramatic events of the first season. It follows the Garvey sisters as they deal with the fallout from a shocking family secret. Grace, played by Anne-Marie Duff, falls in love with Ian and seems to be getting on with her life, even though she is still dealing with the effects of her past.
In Season 1, it was revealed that Grace killed her violent husband John Paul Williams. Still, she cleverly pretended it was an accident with an Atv. Each of her sisters had strong reasons to...

Another season of Bad Sisters from creator Sharon Horgan, based on Malin-Sarah Gozin’s 2012 Belgian television series Clan, is underway on Apple TV+ with all five Garvey sisters returning alongside newcomers Fiona Shaw and Thaddea Graham.
Following the wild pattern of events that unfolded in the first season, a murder mystery still haunts Eva (Horgan), Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene) and Becka (Eve Hewson) Garvey. The suspense and — at times — silliness as well as sisterhood continues with the first two episodes arriving Nov. 13 followed by one per week through December 23.
Read on for what to remember from Bad Sisters Season 1 ahead of Season 2.

Richard Curtis returns to festive filmmaking with That Christmas, which streams on Netflix next month. Here’s the trailer.
Love it or loathe it, there is no denying that Richard Curtis’ Love Actually is a modern Christmas favourite for many. With its saccharine stories of love, lust and, in the case of Andrew Lincoln’s character – let’s be honest – stalking, the film has indelibly inked itself into the fabric of the festive season. It’s almost become a tradition to run an article contributing to the Love Actually debate – and who knows, one year we might even get around to it (we won’t – Ed).
Curtis returned to Christmas films last year with Genie, starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu, a big budget remake of his terrific 1991 television film Bernard And The Genie, which starred Alan Cumming, Lenny Henry and Rowan Atkinson – both films are available to stream on Sky Cinema.

Brian Cox’s Santa Claus is coming to town in the first trailer for Netflix’s animated holiday comedy That Christmas.
In the film’s first trailer, the Succession actor is sporting Kris Kringle’s standard uniform — a beard, red suit with a white fur trim and boots — as he delivers presents to children on the busiest night of the year, Christmas Eve.
That Christmas is based on a trilogy of children’s books by award-winning writer-director Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually and Yesterday) and marks his first leap into animation. The film features entwined stories about family and friends, love and loneliness and Santa Claus making a big mistake.
In her review, The Hollywood Reporter‘s Lovia Gyarkye praised the “charming animation” while adding that the movie “slyly avoids the usual mawkishness by grounding its whimsical story in the real and prickly emotions of life.
