First published in 1881, Swiss author Johanna Spyri’s novel Heidi is one of the best-selling books ever written. As Wikipedia explains, the story follows “a joyful and free-spirited young girl who is orphaned as a toddler” as she develops a friendship with a girl named Klara, who is unable to walk. More than 140 years later, the Swiss icon Heidi has been reimagined as Mad Heidi for an over-the-top action-adventure horror comedy. The film (read our review Here) received a one-night theatrical release in the United States and Canada last week, but if you missed out on that, you still won’t have to wait much longer to see the movie. Raven Banner Releasing and Swissploitation Films are teaming up to bring Mad Heidi to Blu-ray, digital HD, and cable VOD in North America on July 21st!

The director behind Ray Stevenson’s final film has written a heartfelt farewell letter to the star, who died unexpectedly this week. Scroll down to read in full.
Péter Soós was flying home from the Cannes Film Festival when he was informed of Stevenson’s death aged 58.
The director had worked with the Rrr, Thor, Vikings and Rome actor on historical drama 1242 Gateway to the West. Stevenson replaced Kevin Spacey in the role and his scenes wrapped in Hungary back in February. Above is an image of Stevenson on set with Soós.
“On Monday night, on the way home by plane from Cannes, I received the news that you had left us. Only now can I find the words to speak,” wrote Soós. “I have realised the overwhelming weight of the responsibility that has fallen upon me with our work together on what is surely your last feature film.

Ray Stevenson's a busy man. Coming off of his head-turning role in cinephile sensation flick "Rrr," the man has also booked himself a role as a "Star Wars" bad guy in the upcoming "Ahsoka" Disney+ series. Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, he has replaced the extremely problematic Kevin Spacey in the historical action flick "1242: Gateway to the West" playing the lead role in the film about a Hungarian Priest who stands up against the Mongol army.
Also starring in the movie are Eric Roberts ("The Dark Knight"), Michael Ironside ("Starship Troopers"), Bold Choimbol ("Bogd Khaan"), David Schofield ("Gladiator"), and Christopher Lambert ("Highlander"). The film is currently in production under the direction of Peter Soos and is expected to be shopped around to distributors around the end of the year.

In the first leg of what it hopes is an industry revolution, Zurich-based A Film Company has raised north of 2 million in crowd investment from 560 people across 19 counties to co-finance “Mad Heidi,” an action-adventure horror comedy reimagining of the Swiss icon.
The Ott re-set includes portraying the Swiss icon Hedi as she’s never been seen before – with smocked dress, puffed sleeves, apron and pigtails, yes, but as a badass, kick-ass rebel with the brute strength to slice an opponent in two, top to toe, with a battle axe, for example.
In industrial terms, however, the change goes even further as “Mad Heidi” departs from traditional film models not only in financing but also distribution.
Starring Casper Van Dien (“Starship Troopers”) and David Schofield, the English-language movie, with a total 3.5 million budget, is now readying for the second and most radical part of the experiment: Exclusive global release day and date on madheidi.

Inspired by the real history of Bexhill-on-Sea’s Victoria-Augusta-College, a 1930s finishing school for the daughters of the Nazi elite, “Six Minutes to Midnight,” helmed by Andy Goddard, wants to be a Hitchcockian thriller, but merely manages a familiar pastiche peopled with stock characters that should divert less-discriminating viewers. The clunky plot, set circa August 1939, centers on an undercover British agent who infiltrates the school disguised as a new teacher. With the U.K. and Germany on the brink of war, his assignment is to discover if Deutschland plans on repatriating their young flowers of maidenhood and whether said Mädchen might serve as captive pawns in Britain’s diplomatic chess game.
After his predecessor mysteriously disappears, Thomas Miller becomes the school’s English master. He’s disdainfully welcomed by the school’s headmistress Miss Rocholl (a subdued Judi Dench) as a “journeyman” teacher. In a telling indicator of the lower-budget nature of this project,...

With a nod to Robert Donat’s Richard Hannay in Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps and an unintended wink to a bus trip in Torn Curtain with Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, Andy Goddard’s Six Minutes To Midnight (co-written with Eddie Izzard and Celyn Jones) conjures up moments from cinema history. Leontine Sagan’s Mädchen in Uniform from 1931 may come to mind and when the German girls at the Augusta-Victoria College are singing in the staircase, The Sound Of Music is in the air.
The tautly wound historical thriller stars Eddie Izzard and Judi Dench with Carla Juri (of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 and Frauke Finsterwalder’s Finsterworld), Jim Broadbent, Celyn Jones, Maria Dragus (of Michael Haneke’s White Ribbon and Cristian Mungiu’s Graduation), James D’Arcy, David Schofield, and Tijan Marei. “England can be an unforgiving place if you happen to be German”
England, 1939.
17 days before the start of World War 2, English teacher Wheatley (Nigel Lindsay) goes missing from The Augusta-Victoria College for Girls in Bexley-on-Sea, the boarding school famous for housing the daughters and goddaughters of Nazi High Command. 6 days later Thomas Miller (Eddie Izzard) secures a job replacing Wheatley and from then on, tries to secretly find out what exactly happened. Inspired by true events, Six Minutes to Midnight is a period thriller written by Eddie Izzard, director Andy Goddard and co-writer Celyn Jones.
The film starts off strong, with fast-paced, intense scenes from Lindsey and Izzard. It’s accompanied by German composer Marc Streitenfeld’s beautiful score which is a delight to listen to throughout the film. This makes for a great start to the film, with an intriguing mystery to look forward to…or so you would hope.

"My girls are not the enemy..." IFC Films has also debuted a new US trailer for the UK thriller set just days before WWII began called Six Minutes to Midnight, the latest from director Andy Goddard. We just featured the UK trailer for this yesterday, but there's even more footage in here. Set mostly at a finishing school on the south coast of England, the films tells the story of a teacher and a headmistress. 17 days before WWII, an English teacher and his camera disappear on a coastal boarding school with 20 German teen girls. Miller gets the job 6 days later, secretly trying to find out what happened. The film's impressive ensemble cast is lead by Eddie Izzard as Mr. Miller, with Judi Dench, James D'Arcy, Jim Broadbent, Kevin Eldon, Carla Juri, Nigel Lindsay, David Schofield, and Maria Dragus. It looks like this becomes an edge-of-your-seat thriller once ...

On Monday evening, Prince William left his growing family at home to attend the Pride of Britain Awards. While chatting with 5-year-old Suzie McCash, who recently saved her mom's life by calling 911 (999 in England), the royal admitted that he didn't know what Prince George would do in an emergency. "I have a four-year-old called George and if I gave him a telephone I do not know what he would do," William said. "And do you know what? I'm going to have a conversation with my George about what to do because of what you've done. It's really important." During the event - which celebrates the achievements of truly remarkable people who make our world a better place - the soon-to-be father of three also posed for a few selfies with some young fans before mingling with celebrities such as David Schofield, Sir Rod Stewart, and X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger.

"Surely things aren't that bad?" Netflix has debuted an official Us trailer for their upcoming release of the British cop spoof movie titled Mindhorn. This already opened in UK cinemas earlier this month, and first premiered at the London Film Festival last year, which must mean it's actually way better than expected. Mindhorn is about a washed-up actor named Richard Thorncroft, played by comedian Julian Barratt, who played "Mindhorn" on a 1980s detective show. He has a bionic eye that allows him to literally "see the truth", which is why he has the eye patch. Set in the current day, the film is about Mindhorn returning to the Isle of Man to take on the job of working as a real private detective. This also stars Andrea Riseborough, Essie Davis, Russell Tovey, Simon Farnaby, David Schofield, Nicholas Farrell, Simon Callow, and Steve Coogan. It looks quite entertaining, hopefully the entire...

Jenna Coleman and Maisie Williams are about to be crushed – quite literally – in a fresh clip from this weekend's Doctor Who episode.

In the clip above, time is running out for Clara, Ashildr (Williams) and their Viking friends as the Mire trap them in a massive trash compactor-like device.
In spite of some truly vague hints about Ashildr's cosmic connection to The Doctor, we're still guessing about who exactly this plucky young woman really is.
Maisie Williams recently told Digital Spy that Ashildr is in fact "a new character" who meets The Doctor – and yet he recognises her somehow.

Doctor Who pits Vikings against aliens in its next explosive adventure, 'The Girl Who Died'.
Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams makes a guest appearance in the episode, but do these new pictures hold any clues as to her character's identity?
Williams plays Viking girl Ashildr and the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) seems to recognise her. But from where? Or should that be when?
Da Vinci's Demons actor David Schofield also features in the new images, sharing scenes with Capaldi's Time Lord.
But is Schofield's character Odin really the famous figure from Nordic myth - the same bloke that Anthony Hopkins plays in the Thor movies?
You'll have to tune into BBC One at 8.20pm this Saturday (October 17) to get all the answers.
For an early insight, check out our interview with Capaldi and Jenna Coleman (Clara) from July, where they talked all about "vikings on a spaceship".

Fire up the Tardis because the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) are back for another adventure through time and space in Doctor Who.
A brand new teaser for series nine is full of terrifying monsters, strange alien planets and even Game of Thrones favourite Maisie Williams.
It will be another exciting series for the Time Lord, as he teams up with Unit once again and faces an entire city full of those menacing pepper-pots the Daleks.
The shape-shifting Zygons are back to cause trouble as well, following the failure of their world domination plot in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special.
Here's what we learned about Sherlock, Missy and more from Doctor Who's Comic-Con panel
As usual, showrunner Steven Moffat has lined up guest stars galore with the likes of Paul Kaye, Reece Shearsmith, Bethany Black, David Schofield and Rebecca Front popping up.

Doctor Who series 9 with Peter Capaldi arrives in September, which gives us plenty of time to speculate over this first trailer...
"I'm the Doctor, and I save people"
So. The trailer.
In the dead of night (and the slightly more alive of day over the Atlantic at this year's Sdcc), the BBC released a ninety-second trailer for Doctor Who series 9.
It showed Missy, Clara, a Zygon, Maisie Williams, a creature with two faces, and Peter Capaldi's Doctor headlining space Glastonbury or some such and wanting to kiss things to death.
See for yourself, here:
Obviously we knew Clara, Missy and the Zygons were back, and we knew Maisie Williams was in the show but we didn’t know she was apparently ‘back’ as well. What this actually means, we can only speculate.
The trailer for the new series of Doctor Who tantalised us with a feast of monsters and new Peter Capaldi memes.

The BBC’s The Musketeers will have to cope without its showrunner Adrian Hodges for its already-confirmed third series…
Here’s an interesting one – Adrian Hodges, creator and showrunner for the BBC’s The Musketeers, won't be signing on for the third series.
A third run for the family-friendly historical action drama has already been confirmed by the BBC (we can expect it early next year, if previous broadcast dates are anything to go by), but Hodges has ruled himself out for a return.
Our friends at Geek Syndicate got the scoop on the matter, with a quote from the man himself explaining his reason for leaving his own show:
“I just felt that after the last season I was totally knackered. I love the show but it had been a very intensive two…well four years really and what I didn’t want to go was go straight into developing a new season.

Part I. Anger, Suez and Archie Rice
“There they are,” George Devine told John Osborne, surveying The Entertainer‘s opening night audience. “All waiting for you…Same old pack of c***s, fashionable assholes. Just more of them than usual.” The Royal Court had arrived: no longer outcasts, they were London’s main attraction.
Look Back in Anger vindicated Devine’s model of a writer’s-based theater. Osborne’s success attracted a host of dramatists to Sloane Square. There’s Shelagh Delaney, whose A Taste of Honey featured a working-class girl pregnant from an interracial dalliance; Harold Pinter’s The Room, a bizarre “comedy of menace”; and John Arden’s Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance, which aimed a Gatling gun at its audience. Devine encouraged them, however bold or experimental. “You always knew he was on the writer’s side,” Osborne said.

I will be honest with all of you; I am not a huge fan of ‘The Howling’. I know, I know. One of the most revered werewolf films ever made with a huge base of fans and critics alike. By all accounts I should be among them, but there is just something about it I do not gel with. It’s not a badly made film and it boasts some really incredible visual effects (you don’t see a natural lady garden in this day and age, either) and Dee Wallace was very likeable in the lead role, but as a whole, I just couldn’t get into it. Someone has hi-jacked a London commuter train and six passengers left aboard are forced to figure out a way to either stop or get off said train. Given the six passengers, I'm not sure where the title Last Passenger comes from, but more importantly, the fact this film doesn't even care who the driver of the train is or what exactly their motivations are actually works in its favor. These kind of films can often get bogged down in the whos and whys, forgetting that much of the time spent debating the villain's reasons ignores the fact the characters are in a heap-load of trouble. Directed and co-written by first time feature director Omid Nooshin, Last Passenger is a one-location thriller with the majority of the focus on Dr. Lewis Shaler (Dougray Scott), a single father traveling with his son (Joshua Kaynama). But before he realizes trouble is afoot, he's...

In the late 1990s, he was originally cast as adamantium-clawed “X-Men” mauler Wolverine, but then forced to drop out of the film when overruns and delays dragged out the production schedule of “Mission: Impossible II.” Stripped of that franchise touchstone, he’s never quite reached the same buzzy occupational heights. A tight, claustrophic thriller that puts a premium on character development, Last Passenger is one of the best surprises I’ve had at the movies in a long while. Indie thrillers, working with leaner budgets and lesser known stars, are often dead on arrival, thanks to scripts too weak to compensate for the lack of top-tier effects work. Luckily, writer-director Omid Nooshin and co-writer Andrew Love are smart enough to maintain a level of frightening plausibility in their film even as they ratchet the suspense up to agonizing levels. Couple their efforts with remarkably strong performances, and you’ve got one of the year’s best thrillers so far.

Da Vinci’s Demons, Season 2: Episode 4 – “The Ends of the Earth”
Written by Marco Ramirez
Directed by Charles Sturridge
Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz
What strikes me most when considering “The Ends of the Earth” is how the episode (and this season, by extension) manages to engage the viewer while Leo and Riario–arguably the series’ two most compelling characters–are so far removed from the events occurring in Italy. I believe I half-expected Da Vinci’s Demons to become a different kind of show altogether once Leo got started on his quest for the Book of Leaves. It might have made more sense to abandon most of the cast to recurring, minor roles and introduce new companions at sea and from whatever places Leo and co. find themselves along the way. Yet, it feels like the lion’s share of “The Ends of the Earth” tracks multiple plots across Italy,...

What’s this? I’m reviewing a new British movie? Yes indeed, if you’ve been a long time reader of my work, you may have noticed a proclivity for me to review mainly American movies be it of the mainstream or independent variety. But every so often a British flick comes along that grabs my attention – usually they’re of the horror or thriller variety of course, and Last Passenger is no different.
The film tells the story of a small group of passengers on a late night train out of London. In the sleepy and abandoned carriages stop after stop are missed and Lewis (Dougray Scott), with five other remaining passengers, end up on a ride of a lifetime as the train hurtles relentlessly down the track.

If you’re anywhere near the Los Angeles area this Saturday, you may be interested in checking out “An Evening with the Makers of An American Werewolf in London,” a special event that features a screening of the film and a number of guests, including John Landis and Rick Baker:
“The moon seemed perennially full on screen in the 1980s, a decade that saw more than its share of classic—and not-so-classic—werewolf movies including Wolfen (1981), The Howling petrology (1981-1989), The Company of Wolves (1984), Silver Bullet (1985) and Teen Wolf (1985), to name a few. Towering above them all is writer-director John Landis’ An American Werewolf in London (1981). A defining film of the era,American Werewolf proved wildly successful thanks to Landis’ deft balance of comedy and horror, while Rick Baker’s Academy Award–winning makeup effects set the bar for technical mastery. The film’s influence can be felt in...
