The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

By now, the outcome of 1986’s April Fool’s Day is well known: an heiress’ guests are misled to believe their party is being picked off by a killer among them. However, had the producers not requested a last-minute change, the film would have turned the tables on the elaborate prank’s orchestrator; she would have died for real. Fans had hoped to see footage from this shot-but-unused ending on Shout! Factory’s Blu-ray. No such luck, unfortunately. And it was likely not for a lack of trying on the distributor’s part, either. Although the final cut of Fred Walton’s film features no actual deaths, Jeff Rovin’s novelization was based on an earlier draft of Danilo Bach’s script. Which means this now out-of-print adaptation used that sought-after “lost” ending.

In the last episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the U.S.S. Cerritos found themselves under attack by a small armada of Breen warships. The California-class vessel was severely outmatched, and was at risk of being destroyed when a heretofore unseen starship, the U.S.S. Aledo, swooped in, destroyed the attackers and saved the day. The Aledo, it is later revealed, was an experimental Texas-class starship that was run entirely by artificial intelligence. There was no crew on board. The Texas class was the brainchild of one Vice Admiral Buen Amigo (Carlos Alazraqui), who sought to reduce both casualties and any human error in Starfleet by essentially replacing its officers with drones. 

As any good Trekkie knows, creating an artificially intelligent machine is an enormous can of worms on "Star Trek," and giving both A.

Almost every horror fan enjoys a good creature feature, but sometimes it can be hard to find one that plays it mostly straight without descending into complete self-parody. Peter Hyams’ The Relic is just that kind of monster movie, presenting an air of sophistication that distracts you from its roots in outright schlock.

It was one of the few times that Hyams—who has many thriller, sci-fi, and action films in his credits—jumped into the horror pool. Previously, he ventured into supernatural territory with the 1992 fantasy comedy Stay Tuned, which saw John Ritter and Pam Dawber running through a satellite dish system powered by Hell. It wasn’t exactly what many would call horror, but still, check it out if you haven’t—there’s some good dark comedy jokes that would make readers of this site cackle.

"You'll do anything I ask?" Quiver has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Mope, which first premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival. It also played at the Cinepocalypse, Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival, and Fantasy Filmfest in Germany last year. Based on a true crime story by Michael Louis Albo, the film is a dark comedy about the multibillion-dollar world of pornography, the term "mope" refers to a low-level, wannabe porn actor. In this tragic true story, Stephen and Herbert, respectively known by their porn alter egos Steve Driver and Tom Dong, were two such mopes—real-life best friends attempting to live the impossible dream. This all looks as crazy and twisted and wacky as it sounds. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Steve and Kelly Sry as Tom, with David Arquette, Max Adler, Tonya Cornelisse, Clayton Rohner, Brian Huskey, and Peggy Dunne. This seems totally ridiculous, but ridiculous in a good way.

We have a relatively quiet week of home media releases ahead of us this week, but the titles that are coming out are a rad bunch of films nonetheless. Scream Factory is doing the Dark Lord’s work with both the Collector’s Edition of April Fool’s Day and the HD release of Frankenstein: The True Story. If you missed it in theaters back in January, Nicolas Pesce’s The Grudge (2020) is headed to various platforms this Tuesday, and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition release of Philip Ridley’s The Passion of Darkly Noon as well.

Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 24th include Endless Night, Cabal, Hunter’s Moon, The Zombinator, and The Wizard: Collector’s Edition.

April Fool’s Day: Collector’s Edition

A film I’ve talked about ad nauseam for like decades now, Fred Walton’s April Fool’s Day has been a favorite of mine ever since I discovered it on VHS during the summer of 1987.

[Spoiler warning if you haven't seen April Fool's Day.] To me, it’s always been the perfect anti-slasher, where no one in the film really dies (unless you count the film’s missing ending), and instead leans into the whodunit aspects that are driving the mystery of just who exactly is terrorizing Muffy St. John (played by Deborah Foreman) and her friends during what’s supposed to be their idyllic lakeside weekend away from the stresses of college life.

What it may lack in an official body count, April Fool’s Day more than makes up for with its whip-smart script, charismatic performances, and a whopper of an ending that I certainly wasn’t expecting at all the first time I saw it.

When I was a kid, my family would spend New Year's Eve watching movies rented from the local video store. As a young film fanatic, this was one of my favorite nights of the year; not only was everyone else in my family finally sharing my favorite pastime with me, but I would even get to stay up way past my regular bedtime watching movie after movie after movie. The only downside of this tradition was that we weren't the only household in town to do this, apparently, because most of the good movies were usually taken by the time we made it to the video store to stock up. That meant we were often forced to rent more off-beat titles—the ones that hadn't been snatched up because most people hadn't even heard of them.

Lucas Heyne’s feature directing debut Mope will have its world premiere later this month in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. Deadline has the first look at the movie co-written by Zack Newkirk and Heyne and produced by Parkside Pictures in association with Saxton Cinema & Uncooperative Pictures.

The drama is based on the true story of a real-life murder in 2010 at a San Fernando Valley porn company. That’s where Stephen Clancy Hill, a mope (slang for a wannabe porn star), who was living in the company’s warehouse at the time, went on a rampage with a sword when he was told he was fired. He eventually killed his friend and fellow mope Herbert Wong, who tried to intervene when Hill was attacking two others. Hill was killed in a standoff with police five days later.

Best known for playing Norman Bates in the Psycho films, Anthony Perkins played a plethora of other cinematic characters in his career, including roles in Destroyer and Edge of Sanity, both of which will come out on a new double feature Blu-ray this year from Scream Factory.

Originally planned to be released last summer as a double feature release with Scarecrows, Destroyer—along with Edge of Sanity—will finally get its high-def due on April 12th from the fine folks at Scream Factory.

Scream Factory brings late 80’s horror thriller I, Madman to Blu-ray, one of two notable cult classics from Hungarian/Canadian director Tibor Tabaks. Beginning in Canadian television, Tabaks reached notoriety with his 1987 sophomore feature, The Gate, a bizarre creature feature which terrorized children with its forced perspective monsters and introduced the world to child actor Stephen Dorff. He’d follow that up with this pulpy adaptation of a screenplay by David Chaskin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge). The wait is finally over ladies and gentlemen! One of this years most anticipated horror films is finally here! Yep, Tom Six (I Love Dries) has finally unleashed The Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence upon the world. When I watched parts 1 & 2 upon initial release, I was rather underwhelmed, but upon revisiting the films prior to the third and final chapter in the trilogy, I found myself enjoying the films for what they are. Usually being assigned to sit in the electric chair means you’ve reached the end of the line, but for serial killer Ivan Moser, his death sentence is a springboard to a new string of murders in Robert Kirk’s Destroyer. Scream Factory has just announced they are coupling the 1988 horror film with William Wesley’s Scarecrows for a Blu-ray release next summer.

From Scream Factory: “Our “Shocktober” celebration continues with another film to reveal, and this is a rare one: The 1988 prison/slasher film Destroyer will make its debut on the Blu-ray format in Summer 2015 and will be paired in a double feature with the previously-announced Scarecrows—another quasi-slasher flick from 1988.

In Looper (opening Friday), Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a contract killer who rubs out people that the mob throws back in time ... until he himself is tossed back through the portal looking like Bruce Willis and he is unable to shoot himself because he was a huuuuuge Moonlighting fan. At least I think that's the plot.

The point is, time travel is a tricky topic for movies, and lots of times it gets botched. Here are some of the worst reasons we've ever seen for someone to get their Back to the Future on.

1. To Bang Your Own Great-Great-Grandmother (Kate & Leopold)

There’s a theory that you can tell more about a society from its “low-brow” pop culture than you can from its high art. If that’s true, there’s not too much that’s more low-brow than the teen sex comedy, movies which are usually celebrations of male promiscuity and debauchery – often with a vague or bittersweet moral tacked on at the end.

What are teen sex comedies saying about gay people?

Surprisingly, the news lately is pretty good. A trio of recent teen sex comedies, Easy A, She’s Out of My League, and I Love You, Beth Cooper, have either included sympathetic gay teen characters, or joked about gay themes in surprisingly progressive or inclusive ways.

Someone over at Netflix (and, more specifically Netflix's 'Watch Instantly' department) has been digging into my brain and pulling out some really strange and obscure movies that (as far as I know) aren't even available on DVD! The last time out, I was gushing over titles like Rolling Thunder, The Squeeze, and Planet of the Vampires -- but this time the Netflix VHS Stack is overflowing with wierd little flickers. Get a load of these ones:

The 1986 comedy Modern Girls, starring Cynthia Gibb, Daphne Zuniga, Virginia Madsen, and Clayton Rohner. I actually saw this one during its theatrical run. Some of the Animal House guys (Tim Matheson, Stephen Furst) team up with one of the Porky's guys (Dan Monahan) and the Esp hottie from Ghostbusters (Jennifer Runyon) to deliver one of the more fondly-remembered sex comedies of 1984: Up the Creek! Also features a cool Cheap Trick song and a great performance by a dog.
