Has been in two films that won Best Picture: Braveheart (1995) and The Departed (2006).

Despite his being born in Glasgow, Scotland, he has played Irish characters several times, notably his well-known role as Stephen in Braveheart (1995).

Worked with Helen Mirren twice in the same year. He appeared with her in Some Mother's Son (1996) and Prime Suspect 5: Errors of Judgement (1996).

He was a fan of the Harry Potter novels long before being cast in the films. He claims to have read the books several times.

Has twice participated in movies about genocide in Africa; Hotel Rwanda (2004), and Darfur (2009).

Played a character called "Fitz" in both The Departed (2006) and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013).
