Married to actress Friederike Wagner. They have a daughter, Camilla.
Started his acting career on stage in Freiburg (1985).
On the first edition of the "German Actor Award" held during the Berlin Film Festival on 12 February 2012, he won the Award in the category "Best Supporting Actor for Cracks in the Shell (2011).
