Thanks to a fluke in Night of the Living Dead’s original copyright notice, the modern concept of “zombies” has been in the public domain since the release of Romero’s masterpiece back in 1968. That’s why it’s no surprise that so many filmmakers have gone on to reappropriate and update these undead flesh-eaters for new audiences, often changing their mythology and behavior in order to better suit their respective stories.
Naturally, some takes on these shambling corpses are stranger than others, and that’s why we’ve decided to compile a list celebrating six of the weirdest zombies in horror movies. After all, when it comes to breaking the rules, no one does it better than the horror genre!

Like many vampire movies, Stake Land mixes genres to tell an engaging story in a post-apocalyptic setting with compelling characters. Stake Land focuses on world-building and setting, creating a unique atmosphere that goes beyond typical vampire horror tropes. Despite being overlooked upon release, Stake Land stands out for its eerie atmosphere, characterization, and brutal fantasy elements.
Vampires have long been a staple of horror movies, which makes it interesting when they can mix genres and create compelling films. The genre has produced many iconic movie vampires, though notably, fewer vampire hunters are depicted. The monstrous fantasy allows for many iconic settings in vampire movies, which allows some to stand out above others.
Given the many vampire films, standing out and subverting the common vampire horror tropes can be challenging. Unfortunately, many good vampire films go unnoticed in the oversaturated market. One of the best genre-mixing vampire-centered films is also a...

I’ve been obsessed with apocalyptic fiction since I was a small boy, but young Luiz was always frustrated with the disproportionate amount of media that takes place months or even years after the end of the world instead of showing us the apocalypse as it happens. It was only years later that I understood the logistical difficulties in telling a believable yarn about a near-instant societal collapse, though I never stopped wishing for more stories that take place in the moments between our current world and whatever wasteland comes next.
Thankfully, there are a few brave filmmakers willing to take on the challenge of depicting the early days of humanity’s downfall. And with Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One (which is now available on Digital outlets at home) proving that audiences are still hungry for this specific kind of apocalyptic thrill, we’ve decided to come...

World-ending apocalypses are inherently terrifying, but sometimes what comes after is even scarier. The remnants of humanity are left to pick up the pieces of a world torn apart by devastating catastrophe, with resources far scarcer than ever-present threats.
This week’s streaming picks belong to post-apocalyptic horror movies that explore life after the world as we know it has ended, where conditions are harsh and survival odds are low.
While the frequent recurring theme of post-apocalyptic movies highlights how humankind is its own worst enemy, these five titles take drastically different approaches. Some favor retro style, while others infuse their wastelands with a heaping helping of inhuman monsters.

To use VFX or not use VFX: that is the question, and one that each TV show has to answer differently. “Sweet Tooth,” the Netflix series set in a world where a virus has wiped out much of humanity and, maybe or maybe not coincidentally, human-animal hybrids are now born, has a tactile, cobbled-together ethos in its design choices. The show’s look doesn’t just illustrate the haphazard nature of scavenging for survival but also is in itself a kind of argument for everything that makes its young human-deer hybrid Gus (Christian Convery) a hero. Building too much of that world in a digital environment would flatten it and make it feel too slick.
Still, in the show’s final season showdown, the story needed to create some big setpieces that were beyond what could be done practically. How “Sweet Tooth” combined new-school and old-school techniques is a fantastic...

Gus (Christian Convery) and Jepperd’s (Nonso Anozie) epic journey through a broken world overrun by sickness and crumbling salvation is at an end. With a new world order on the horizon, humankind could be on the brink of its last gasp as a new species ascends to dominion over land and sky. Netflix‘s Sweet Tooth is one of the streamer’s most eye-opening series as the story confronts the abuse of Mother Nature, the segregation of a marginalized hybrid community, and the promise of a new rise to power as humans cope with losing a Darwinian battle worldwide. Thankfully, gifted creators and actors from Sweet Tooth, including showrunner Jim Mickle, executive producers Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell, and actors Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, and Rosalind Chao, are here to usher us through the apocalypse.

Love Is Blind is merely a TV show about TV relationships. Showtime’s Couples Therapy, however, is one big psychoanalysis session bursting with real vulnerability that’ll make you want to ditch your golden goblets forever.
Netflix’s social experiment sets up singles in adjoined rooms — called pods — in hopes that they might fall in love without the distraction of physical appearance, and ultimately forces couples to walk down the aisle where they’ll either say “I do,” or walk away from each other forever. Warning! Contains spoilers for Sweet Tooth season 3.
Munaq, aka the Caribou Man, is revealed as the first hybrid born before Gus, shedding new light on Sweet Tooth's origins. Munaq lived for over a century before being killed, highlighting the hybrids' unique genetic makeup and longer lifespans. The Caribou Man serves as a cautionary tale for Gus, showing the potential darkness in humanity if not for acts of kindness.
Although Sweet Tooth season 3 maintains an air of ambiguity surrounding the Caribou Man's origins, it drops enough clues to let viewers deduce who he is and how he came into existence. Developed by Jim Mickle, Netflix's Sweet Tooth season 3 reinstates almost all the characters who led its first two seasons. While some, like Rani and Abbot, do not return in the finale because they meet with tragic fates toward Sweet Tooth season 2's ending, others, like Jepperd, Gus, Wendy, and Bear,...

I’ve been on a bit of a Larry Fessenden kick lately either intentionally or by circumstance. I really wanted to talk about the movie Late Phases which has a cameo from the man and his name in the produced by section. This led to one of our favorites in Danielle Harris wishing that more people knew about a movie she did called Stake Land. While this had a six degrees of separation angle attached to it with Late Phases star Nick Damichi also starring and writing Stake Land, it also brought back Fessenden in his comfortable producer role, oh and another cameo. We’ve gone down another rabbit hole and heard from the man himself that The Last Winter (watch it Here) is a movie of his that he wishes had been seen by more people. The Sweet Tooth team never wanted to create “a bleak world” for its pint-sized hero, human-deer hybrid Gus (Christian Convery). There are unavoidably dark moments in the fantasy drama, which returns for Season 2 on April 27, but its ultimately hopeful tone offers an important message for kids and adults alike. “There are so many things that I grew up watching with my folks that still stick with me,” series creator Jim Mickle recalls. “I’d love to think that Sweet Tooth could be that for people.”

Hybrid children like Gus are viewed by adults as either terrifying threats or possible saviors. Who are we to disagree Danielle Harris? When looking for a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw, nothing in our completely mad up rules that say a movie can’t be well received at the time of release. It can win awards including one from the audiences that saw it at TIFF and the kind of go away. There are a ton of movies that are great and original films in a genre that is nearly as obsessed with sequels and movie universes as DC and Marvel are today. Rose Glass is back with a vengeance in her sweat-slick ode to American underbelly tales, Love Lies Bleeding. The Saint Maud filmmaker returns with a brawny psychological thriller that isn't afraid to get weird or take risks, which is both a warning and encouragement. Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian unsurprisingly flex their talents while wrestling with every twist and turn in Glass' queer criminal caper, gorgeously shot like high art meets a weightlifting competition. It's gritty like grip chalk and obscure in measured doses, comparable to something illicit like Jim Mickle's Cold in July splashed with Glass' exciting penchant for surrealist pops in an otherwise grounded narrative.
Kristen Stewart stars as reclusive Crater Gym manager Lou, who takes an immediate shine to the beefy and beautiful bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O'Brian). One thing leads to another, and Jackie ends up romantically entangled with Lou, shacked together while Jackie trains for a competition in Las Vegas.
