Kevin Smith offered the latest on Twilight of the Mallrats (Mallrats 2), the long-awaited sequel to the 1995 cult film Mallrats, which starred Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani, and Jeremy London.
When discussing the potential sequel — that has been in stuck in limbo for years — during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Smith said that after Doherty’s death in July following a battle with cancer, he considered walking away from the project all together. “My first feeling after Shannen passed was like, ‘Well, that’s it,'” he told THR.

The 4:30 Movie writer-director Kevin Smith is well aware that filmmakers are in a self-reflective phase, especially after the wake-up call that was the recent global pandemic. In the past few years alone, Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and James Gray (Armageddon Time) have made period dramas based on their childhoods, but most notably, Steven Spielberg put out The Fabelmans in 2022, detailing how his parents’ divorce intersected with his budding filmmaking prowess. Smith’s 16th feature about his four first loves — his neighborhood movie theater, his adolescent crush and his two best friends — is already being compared to Spielberg’s most recent Oscar-nominated film.
“A lot of nice people online have been saying that [The 4:30 Movie] is kind of like The Fabelmans, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s sweet.’ And then The New York Times was like, ‘Yeah, it’s kind of like The Fabelmans if the kid grows up to make terrible movies,...

The sight of Tim Walz‘s son Gus tearfully standing up to proclaim “That’s my dad!” as he took the stage on Wednesday night’s (August 21) Democratic National Convention touched the hearts of audiences across the country. However, the scene has also sparked some trolling from certain right-wing personalities on social media that won’t be amplified in this post. In response to comments such as those, actor Jeremy London offered a tearful message to the digital world describing why protecting the 17-year-old, who has a non-verbal learning disorder, Adhd, and an anxiety disorder from the harm of hateful commentary. “You guys know that we’ve been raising our grandbaby Kingston. But what I haven’t ever mentioned, because it just simply doesn’t matter in the big picture of things, is that he’s also nonverbal, and he’s autistic, and [there are] challenges to raising him that I didn...

Actress-turned-filmmaker Devanny Pinn makes her directorial debut with The Black Mass, one of my favorite horror films of the year.
This gruesome and nasty slasher calls to mind serial killer thrillers of the past, including John McNaughton’s masterful Henry, and is now streaming on Screambox.
A true-crime thriller based on events in Florida during the winter of 1978, it unfolds over 24 hours and centers on a serial killer in the lead-up to his ultimate, deranged killing spree.
“Presenting a harrowing and unsettling portrayal of the twisted mind of a notorious murderer, Pinn also explores the devastating consequences of his violent actions on the victims and survivors alike,” FrightFest wrote out of its International Premiere.
Jeremy London (Mallrats) co-stars alongside genre veterans Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4), Susan Lanier (The Hills Have Eyes), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist), Nicky Whelan (Halloween II), and Kathleen Kinmont...

The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.
While he is in almost every scene, or the scenes are shot from his perspective, for the...

Kevin Smith has apologized to Shannen Doherty after she revealed to him his 1995 cult movie “Mallrats” killed her film career.
Doherty was reminiscing about the movie with Smith, a guest on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast, when she pointed out that despite becoming a fan favorite, it had fared poorly at the box office when it was originally released.
“That’s kind of the interesting thing about ‘Mallrats,’ right, is that it wasn’t a box office success,” she told Smith, who replied “Oh, it died.”
“It died,” Doherty agreed. “So did my film career. That was it.”
Doherty was the most famous member of “Mallrats” when the movie came out, having already starred in “Heathers” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Smith even admitted during the podcast that it was largely because of Doherty’s involvement the film got greenlit.

"I never start seeing anybody without stalking them first." Well, okay. Virgil Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie musical comedy called Open. A woman in a troubled marriage falls for her former teen heartthrob, who's fallen from industry favor, while having nagging (and empowering) hallucinations about fronting an 80's New Wave Band. Turns out this isn't really about wanting to be in a band, it's a weird story about open relationships and trouble romance. Starring Lindsay Anne Williams as Kristina, Jeremy London, William Forsythe, Amber Reign Smith, Elena Sanchez, and Miles Doleac. For the film's 10 original songs, writers Doleac & Williams partnered with their collaborator and composer, Clifton Hyde, and Oliver Hofer, to create a musical landscape "that's sure to delight fans of synth-driven 80’s post-punk." Or not. Because this looks really bad - the trailer is incoherent, and I don't expect the film to be any better.

When a filmmaker takes on a story based on the crimes committed by a real serial killer, they have to walk a fine line. If they cross that line, it can feel disrespectful to the victims… and can even seem like they’re glorifying the killer. That’s not something Devanny Pinn intends to do with her feature directorial debut a 1970s serial killer tale called Black Mass. Speaking with Rue Morgue, she revealed that Black Mass focuses on the victims rather than the killer.
Inspired by real events, Black Mass is set over a 24-hour period in Florida during the winter of 1978 when college girls were being stalked by a serial killer. Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle wrote the screenplay. Cast members include Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Jeremy London (Mallrats), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Michelle Romano (Escape From Ensenada), Kathleen Kinmont...

Gravitas Ventures have announced the acquisition of director Miles Doleac’s macabre riff on the Cernunnos myth, Demigod, which stars Rachel Nichols. The distributor plans for a late-October, day-and-date streaming and theatrical release.
Directed and co-written by Doleac (alongside Michael Donovan Horn), Demigod was produced by Doleac, James Victor Bulian, Lindsay Anne Williams, and Wesley O’Mary, the same team behind 2020’s The Dinner Party. Demigod’s supporting cast includes Doleac, Williams, Elena Sanchez, and Jeremy London.
Says Doleac:
I’m extremely grateful to Jeff Cooper and to Gravitas for their belief in this film’s potential. From its infancy, I knew this was a film that I wanted seen on the big screen. I’m heartened that audiences will have the opportunity to see it in movie theaters, an increasing rarity, of course, for true indie films.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American distribution rights to Goodbye, Butterfly, the directorial and screenwriting debut of Tyler Wayne. The neo-noir psychological thriller will get a theatrical day-and-date release January 15, 2021.
Adam Donshik stars as Ryan, a loving family man whose 5-year-old daughter is murdered. When the police investigation hits a dead end, he has a chance encounter with an oddball neighbor named Stan (Andy Lauer) and becomes convinced he is the killer. After the police ignore his suspicions, Ryan’s obsession with Stan quickly turns violent. It begs the question: Just how far would you go for justice? Marie Burke, Angela Sauer, Addison Ross, Jennifer Adams and Jeremy London also star.
“A thirst for retributive justice is a base human drive in the face of tragedy,” Gravitas Ventures’ Megan Huggins said. “Filmmaker Tyler Wayne has taken this and run with it, creating a taut, morally nuanced thriller that keeps you guessing to the end.

Last week, we heard that Kevin Smith has got the full cast back together for Mallrats 2. That means leads Jeremy London and Jason Lee as T.S. Quint and Brodie, along with Shannen Doherty, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Claire Forlani, Michael Rooker and Jason Mewes. But one member of the cast who most assumed couldn’t return was the dearly departed Stan Lee.
In the 1996 original, Lee appeared as himself, dispensing sage advice to our heroes, answering questions about whether Reed Richards can stretch every single part of his body and talking about how the superheroes he created were all reflections of his own emotions. It’s one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, and Lee puts in a great performance.
Now, Smith has stated that Stan Lee will indeed be back in Mallrats 2, but he’s not revealing how, saying:

1996’s Mallrats was critically skewered and bombed at the box office. Snooty critics may have been put off by the comic book references, stoner humor and stink palms, but to a generation of teenagers, it became a cult classic. Director Kevin Smith went on to have the last laugh and now plans are coming together for Mallrats 2 (which may end up being called either Twilight of the Mallrats or Mallrats Too).
Over the past few months, we’ve heard confirmation that various members of the original cast were returning, but it’s actually looking like a full reunion is in the works (with the obvious exception of the dearly departed Stan Lee). This means we’re going to see Shannon Doherty, Jeremy London, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Claire Forlani, Jason Mewes, Michael Rooker, and Smith himself – as well as a potential appearance by Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell.

In 1994, 23-year-old Kevin Smith became the toast of Park City, Utah, as his debut film, Clerks, earned the Sundance Film Festival’s Filmmakers Trophy. Smith quickly joined the ranks of fellow Sundance stars Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, as ’90s independent film became an industry-changing movement. Naturally, there was a lot of interest in Smith’s follow-up to Clerks, and he was quickly approached by Raising Arizona and Dazed and Confused producer, James Jacks, about making his second film with Universal’s Gramercy Pictures. From there, the script for Mallrats was soon completed.
As Smith started to cast the film, acclaimed casting director Don Phillips asked him if he’d do a favor for talent manager Gay Ribisi, and mother to Giovanni Ribisi. The request involved meeting the boyfriend of Ribisi’s daughter, Marissa, as the boyfriend had just retired from professional skateboarding in order to act. Filmmaker Kevin Smith has found the positive side of being stuck in quarantine — it gave him the opportunity to sit down at his computer and crank out the first draft of “Twilight of the Mallrats!” the sequel to the cult hit “Mallrats,” which came out in 1995.
“25 years after the original, Brodie Bruce will be back for an unnecessary sequel set against the Mallpocalypse!” Smith wrote on Instagram, giving fans insight into what the memorable characters are doing these days.
“Rene, Willam, Gwen, Brandy, T.S., Trish, Mr. Svenning, Lafours and the rebooted @jayandsilentbob are the returning ‘Rats in an Askewniverse imagining about what happens when the sidewalk sales end, and ‘happily ever after’ is easier to say than live! "How often do you have these dinners?" Historia Films has debuted an official promo trailer for an indie horror film titled The Dinner Party, the latest horror creation from Mississippi native filmmaker / actor Miles Doleac. A budding playwright and his wife attend a dinner party hosted by wealthy, cultural elites, who've promised to bankroll his latest play to Broadway, but, in fact, have darker designs in mind for the couple. Sounds a bit too much like The Invitation, mixed with Ready or Not. This stars Bill Sage, Lindsay Anne Williams, Jeremy London, Mike Mayhall, Alli Hart, Ritchie Montgomery, and Doleac. It looks especially bland, but still might entice a few horror fans. Here's the first festival promo trailer for Miles Doleac's The Dinner Party, direct from YouTube: In the film, written and directed by the Banshee alum, a budding playwright and his wife attend a dinner party hosted by wealthy,...

After Clerks in 1994, Kevin Smith went back to his writing desk to work on a tale of slackers hanging out in the mall and so, in 1995, Mallrats was born. It is, in many ways, similar to Clerks in tone. You move away from the Quick Stop and into a shopping mall. Instead of Dante and Randall, we were introduced to Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee) and T.S (Jeremy London), two friends who talked shit, hung out, discussed the important things in life, like video games, kids on escalators and, of course, their relationships.
