Exclusive: Chris Rock’s animated series Everybody Still Hates Chris is lining up the stars.

The series, which is set to premiere on Comedy Central on September 25, has unveiled a swathe of guest stars including Ayo Edebiri, Sally Jessy Raphael and Busta Rhymes.

The Bear star, talk show host and rapper will be joined by the likes of Tisha Campbell, Sam Richardson and Bell Biv DeVoe members Ricky Bell, Michael L. Bivins, Ronald Boyd DeVoe Jr.

A half-dozen showbiz figures, each of whom hails from a marginalized community within America, have recorded a public service announcement that is launching on Tuesday — which is National Voter Registration Day, and exactly seven weeks to the day from the 2024 presidential election — calling upon their fellow Americans to register to vote.

Participants in the campaign — which was organized by the media production and management consultancy Icon Mann and will air 48 times on the Revolt cable network from Sept. 17-29 — include producer/director Ali LeRoi, who created Everybody Hates Chris; Tony-winning stage and screen actress Anika Noni Rose; Grammy-winning singer/actress Estelle; actor/activist Jason Butler Harner; actor/producer Michael Ealy; Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo.

The continuing — and now animated — story of Chris Rock’s life will return to TV in September.

Comedy Central has set a Sept. 25 premiere date for Everybody Still Hates Chris, an animated series based on the Upn/CW sitcom Everybody Hates Chris. The cable network has also released a first look at the animated Rock family (which is at the top of this page).

As with the live-action comedy, which ran from 2005-09, Everybody Still Hates Chris will feature Rock narrating stories from his life growing up in Brooklyn. Tichina Arnold and Terry Crews will reprise their roles as Rochelle and Julius, Chris’ parents. Tim Johnson Jr. plays the young Chris, and Terrence Little Gardenhigh and Ozioma Akagha voice his siblings, Drew and Tonya. Gunnar Sizemore plays Greg, Chris’ only friend at school.

The comedy series Everybody Hates Chris, inspired by filmmaker Chris Rock’s teenage years, is getting reimagined for a new animated series called Everybody Still Hates Chris. Select actors from the original live-action series reprise their roles while newcomers join the hate parade coming to Comedy Central later this year.

Chris Rock will once again narrate the story of his life.

The comedian will be part of the voice cast of Everybody Still Hates Chris, an animated series based on the critically acclaimed Upn/CW comedy Everybody Hates Chris. As with the original, Rock will narrate the show — which is set to premiere on Comedy Central later this year — as his adult self, looking back at events from his childhood.

Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold will also reprise their roles from the live-action series as Chris’ parents, Julius and Rochelle, on the Comedy Central series. Expect to hear some familiar voices on “Everybody Still Hates Chris,” Comedy Central’s upcoming animated take on the hit 2000s live action comedy “Everybody Hates Chris.” That includes star and executive producer Chris Rock, who narrated the original series and will do the same in the new version.

Also back are original stars Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold, who played Chris’ parents in the original series and will voice them in the animated edition. New cast members include Tim Johnson Jr., Ozioma Akagha, Terrence Little Gardenhigh and Gunnar Sizemore.

Contrary to what you may have heard, being a TV writer isn’t solely about the interminable daily ritual of placing, receiving and consuming each afternoon’s rigorously debated lunch order. No—there are also fantasy football teams to be managed and Nerf basketballs to be bounced from one end of the workspace to the other. That, plus the tricky business of using one’s imagination to dream up the characters, storylines and dialogue that so many millions of people around the world build their lives around, e.g. a highly demanding creative act that often requires just as much strategic distraction as it does pure artistic inspiration. And all this is even before we even get to strikes, AI and a post-Peak TV landscape where the number of shows are actually contracting for the first time this century.

So yeah—it’s a hard industry to build a career in.

Deion Sanders is potentially going primetime, again.

Derek Luke, best known for his starring role turn in Denzel Washington’s directorial debut Antwone Fisher, has signed with Gersh for representation.

Luke, a veteran film and TV actor, has recent credits that include Disney+’s The Crossover, a coming-of-age drama about two middle school basketball prodigies based on a novel by Kwame Alexander, to bow on April 5. The actor also appears in two movies directed by Katie Holmes: Alone Together and Rare Objects.

Luke reunited with Holmes after their work in Pieces of April. He earned an Independent Spirit Award for his breakout role as Hollywood newcomer in Antwone Fisher.

Chris Rock’s animated adult series “Everybody Still Hates Chris” was greenlit Tuesday to run on Paramount+ and Comedy Central, an individual with knowledge of the move told TheWrap.

The show, which was ordered straight-to-series by MTV Entertainment Studios, reimagines the sitcom in an animated adult format.

Rock will return as a narrator and executive producer on the series and, like the original, will be based on the comedian’s teenage years. The half-hour animated series will feature “stories inspired by [Rock’s] experiences growing up as a skinny nerd in a large working class family in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, during the late 1980s.”

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed an overall deal with the writing and producing team of Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman under their new production arm, RaqMar Entertainment.

The new entity will focus on writing and producing with a multicultural emphasis for the theatrical market. They will also cultivate up-and-coming talent by mentoring new voices from the U.S. and international/bilingual markets.

The comedy series is returning for a six-episode limited revival at the streamer, with Kevin Hart, Boris Kodjoe, Duane Martin, Jb Smoove, Nelly, Nick Cannon, Robin Thicke, Cynthia McWilliams and Jackie Long all returning. The new series will also feature a range of celebrity guest stars like the original series. The original “Real Husbands of Hollywood” debuted on BET back in 2013 and ran for five seasons, with the series also releasing two specials. Real Husbands of Hollywood is making a comeback. BET+ has greenlighted a six-episode limited series revival of the hit BET reality TV parody show from Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions and Jesse Collins Entertainment. The show is currently in production in Los Angeles with a premiere date Tbd.

Exclusive: Sanjay Shah (Central Park) has been tapped as writer and executive producer on Everybody Hates Chris, an animated series reboot of Chris Rock’s beloved autobiographical family sitcom. Rock is poised to return as narrator and executive producer of the animated project, which is currently in development at CBS Studios, the studio behind the 2005 coming-of-age single-camera comedy, created by Rock and Ali LeRoi based on Rock’s teen years.

Shah is coming off a stint as an executive producer/co-showrunner on the first two seasons of Apple TV+’s animated musical series Central Park. His other series credits include Fresh Off The Boat, South Park and King of the Hill. He’s also consulted on feature and streaming projects at Pixar. Shah is repped by UTA, Kaplan/Perrone, and attorney Ken Richman.

Living Single star Erika Alexander, who has appeared in Black Lightning and Wu Tang: An American Saga, Derek Luke of 13 Reasons Why and The Americans, and True Blood’s Sam Trammell have been cast in the lead roles.

The film tells the story of a family seeking shelter in a neighbor’s bunker (Trammell), while the American economy is in collapse and the nation under martial law. There they find the danger inside is potentially greater than the danger outside.

Alexander and Luke have previously worked with Blumhouse; Alexander starred in Get Out and Luke featured in The Purge television series.

Exclusive: Everybody Hates Chris co-creator Ali LeRoi is to direct American Refugee – the second movie in Blumhouse Television’s recent partnership with Epix.

This comes after the producer struck a slate deal with the MGM-owned cable network to make eight television movies including A House on the Bayou, from Don’t Tell a Soul writer and director Alex McAulay.

American Refugee is centered around a family seeking shelter in their neighbor’s bunker, when the American economy is in collapse, the nation is under martial law, and the danger inside is potentially greater than the danger outside.

An animated reboot of Chris Rock’s sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris” is in the works at CBS Studios, TheWrap has learned.

Based on Rock’s teenage years, “Everybody Hates Chris” ran for four seasons, first on Upn from 2005-2006, and then for its final three years on The CW. Rock is expected to lend his voice as narrator for the animated reboot. Also attached to the project are Ali LeRoi, who co-created the original series with Rock, and Michael Rotenberg, who was an executive producer on the sitcom.

Also in development at CBS Studios are a “Panther Baby” TV adaptation from Gina Prince-Bythewood, which is set up at Starz, and a remake of the Israeli series “Shtisel” from “Insatiable” creator Lauren Gussis, which is being taken out to market.

It’s a tricky balance, combining this popcorn movie conceit with a serious social issue, but the film mostly pulls it off. It’s anchored by a strong performance from Steven Silver, an up-and-coming actor from Netflix’s ‘13 Reasons Why’. As Tunde, Silver commits entirely as the narrative moves from high school soap opera to forbidden love story to coming-out drama to police brutality suspense to sci-fi mystery. February is Black History Month so we like to put extra shine on Black Hollywood and recognize the achievements of the community and how they have paved the way and pushed the needle further when it comes to diversity and representation in film & TV.

The Film Life Foundation’s inaugural Social Justice Now Film Festival (Sjnff) has unveiled its robust program including its spotlight screenings including the documentaries 40 Years A Prisoner from HBO, Us Kids, and Sncc executive produced by Pharell Williams as well as I Am Other. and the narrative feature Reefa. The fest will also feature the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed Just Mercy and Ryan Coogler’s award-winning Fruitvale Station as opening night films which will screen at Paramount’s Drive-In Theater on Wednesday, October 21. Both films star Michael B. Jordan, who was previously announced as Co-Ambassador alongside Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Opal Tometi. All official selections and spotlight screenings will be available to stream for free on abffplay.com, a new digital platform, powered by Endeavor Streaming from October 21-25.

The 30th annual Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival has revealed its lineup for this year’s virtual edition which will also include drive-in and special events as it showcases 150 films and Nine episodic series. The fest was originally set for May but was pushed to October 1-11.

Inside Out’s Executive Director Andria Wilson and the festival’s Director of Programming Andrew Murphy unveiled the lineup for the 10-day festival which includes an exclusive conversation with talent from Netflix’s The Boys in the Band. Based on the Tony-award winning play, the new film stars Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons and is directed by Joe Mantello and produced by Ryan Murphy.
