Netflix is not holding back when it comes to the return of Squid Game, the streamer’s biggest show of all time, as it held an immersive premiere and fan event in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Los Angeles City College’s athletic field was converted into a recreation of the games, featuring the iconic “Red Light, Green Light” (with accompanying giant doll), set-inspired photo opps and a seemingly endless number of pink guards wandering the premises. The night’s biggest component, though, was a nearly 5k run, as hundreds of fans — outfitted in the show’s green tracksuits — attempted to win tickets to the night’s premiere screening by correctly completing challenges along the route.
“I can’t believe I’m watching this moment,” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told the crowd as he overlooked the sea of costumed guests. “Thank you for coming to the event and celebrating Squid Game season two together.

Let the games begin! As the world awaits Season 2 of the smash-hit series Squid Game, Netflix has galvanized fans around the globe in anticipation of the new episodes.
On Dec. 9, the new season had its premiere in Seoul. And another premiere will soon follow, including a not-quite-5K race in Los Angeles on Dec. 12 where fans will compete for a seat at the US screening. It’s all green lights from here — there’s no stopping Squid Game from taking over the world.
“I never imagined that we’d make a second season,” Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, said in Seoul. “Developing new stories and writing a full season is a tremendously daunting task, but the script came out unbelievably well … It was so well written that I often thought director Hwang [Dong-hyuk] was a genius, and I told him that, too. … Finally, the day to reveal the...

It’s been more than three years since audiences saw Lee Jung-jae’s gambling addict Seong Gi-hun jump into his Player 456 uniform to compete in the deadly, childish games at the center of Netflix’s Korean drama “Squid Game.” Now that the Emmy-winning smash hit show returns for Season 2 on Dec. 26, viewers might not recognize Lee when he suits up as Gi-hun again — but that’s not because of the lengthy wait between installments.
This season, Gi-hun is no longer his fun-loving, optimistic self, which is pretty understandable for someone who was the sole survivor of a battle royale. He walked away with 45.6 billion won — but it was all blood money.
Given that “Squid Game” creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk didn’t conclude Season 1 with any plans to make a second (which has led to a third and final) season, it was not a role Lee initially had to worry about reprising.

"Squid Game" is more than just the most thrilling competition on TV — it also wears its cultural identity on its sleeve. Though it deals with universal themes such as the skewed distribution of wealth, the series is profoundly and unashamedly South Korean. In fact, Hwang Dong-hyuk's survival thriller revolves heavily around a deadly series of Korean playground games that the country's desperate, impoverished people play for the amusement of the jaded global elite.
One of the things to remember about "Squid Game" is that it thrives on carefully chosen locations and impressive set pieces but rarely overexplains them. While the show does a great job of depicting the everyday life and deep financial distress of the Squid Game participants and explaining each game for viewers who may be unfamiliar with them, it's often content to leave its impressive locations unaddressed. Still, it doesn't hurt to know more about the...

It’s all games, but very little fun (at least for the players). When Squid Game protagonist Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) enters the Squid Game arena, he’s struck by its inviting bright hues: pinks, greens, and twinkling lights. But, underneath the childlike wonder of Squid Game is violence even greater than in the rat race outside. Squid Game is a competition that promises fortune, but almost exclusively deals in pain, manipulation, and death. Even the winner leaves with blood on their hands.
Still, there isa winner. And a series of vicious games decide the identity of that winner, who takes home a prize of 4.56 billion won. Whether you’re a Squid Gamesuperfan or a new viewer, you’re going to need a refresher on all the games at the center of the series ahead of Season 2’s...

If you thought actual reality shows were bad, just be thankful we don't live in the same universe as those unfortunate characters in "Squid Game." The Netflix series famously put millions and millions of viewers in a chokehold during the height of the pandemic in 2021. It's been quite a long wait to see what happens next after season 1's shocking ending left fans with more questions than answers, not the least of which involved the identity of the mysterious figure running the morbid games in the first place and, more importantly, the uncertain fates of our surviving characters. Considering what a pop cultural phenomenon this South Korean survival/horror series turned into, it was only a matter of time before the streaming platform decided to return to the scene of the crime and recreate that success in a second season.
That time has finally arrived; "Squid Game" season 2 has now been made available to critics,...

Forced to play a new set of games, Gi-hun finds himself locked in a tense battle with the shadowy Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), whose true motivations remain cloaked in secrecy as the twists and turns of Season 2 unfurl. The streamers’ newly-discovered drive to prioritize profit over subs will soon be felt in the landscape in a big way, according to an Ampere Analysis report.
The firm’s latest deep dive into the SVoD world found that subscription streaming revenues are expected to grow almost three times faster than subscribers over the next five years. Ampere expects plus-30% growth by 2029 as services focus on profitability and per-subscriber monetization. By 2029, the annual revenue of the global subscription streaming market will be more than $190B, with Netflix making up almost one third, according to the report.
While Ampere predicted global subs will hit a milestone by crossing 2 billion by 2029, this 200 million rise over the next five years will be far smaller than the prior five-year period, when subs doubled with people stuck at home during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With an enormous Young-hee doll towering ominously above them, the creator and stars of Squid Game met the press in South Korea on Monday to publicly discuss the second season of Netflix’s most-watched show for the first time. Fans and influencers who had flocked to Seoul from across the globe for the occasion could be heard chatting excitedly about how unnerving it was to be in the presence of the deadly Squid Game figurine, as well as the legions of pink-suited guards who were stationed throughout the event inside the city’s futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza. But it wasn’t long before Squid Game‘s director-creator Hwang Dong-hyuk reminded everyone that a far graver backdrop was looming over the show’s wildly anticipated rollout in its home country — a spiraling political crisis sparked by South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law less than a week ago.

Just over 3 years after Squid Game became a global phenomenon — sweeping the Emmys and becoming Netflix's most popular series ever — the Korean drama is back with over 450 new contestants and new, brutal games.
The premise of Squid Game is simple. A mysterious organization sets up a series of games on a secret island. The contestants are all cash-strapped and in serious debt they're desperate to get out of. With a potential prize worth billions of dollars, they can't say no to participating in the games, even if the consequence for losing any of the games is death.
In season 1, Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-Jae) is the last man standing, taking home the enormous cash prize. However, he feels guilty, and in the final moment of the season decides to seek vengeance against whoever is running these sick games. Season 2 begins three years later, where Gi-Hun is ardently searching for the hosts of the games.

Back in August, we got word that Lucasfilm/Disney would not be moving forward with a second season of The Acolyte.
The decision was met with a mixture of indifference and disappointment, but it's very clear that a lot of Star Wars fans - and some of the actors involved with the show - were surprised by this development.
Despite some rumors to the contrary, reliable reports suggested that The Acolyte was cancelled because it didn't get enough viewers, plain and simple. However, it's difficult to disregard the possibility that the level of negativity surrounding the show did influence the studio's decision to at least some extent.
While speaking to Vanity Fair about season 2 of Squid Game, star Lee Jung-jae (Master Sol) reflected on the backlash the show received from certain fans, with some cast members being subjected to racist, homophobic and misogynistic abuse online.
“My feelings were hurt,” he admitted.

Although The Acolyte did wrap up certain plotlines during its first season, there was enough left unexplained that its cancellation was very frustrating for fans. One of those tidbits included the reveal of Darth Plagueis, the future master of Sheev Palpatine. Had the show returned for another season (or even more), The Acolyte star Manny Jacinto teased that we definitely would have seen more of Darth Plagueis.
While speaking at a panel at FanExpo San Francisco (via Collider), Jacinto was asked about his character’s connection to Darth Plagueis.
“Oh man, that’s a tough question. They’re not [connected], they’re definitely not. Oh man, how do I answer that? What time is it? [laughs] There are definitely a lot of different theories, like who he is, because we never actually know his true identity. Is Qimir’s name actually Qimir? We definitely wanted to explore it,” Jacinto explained. “There was...

Squid Game is back with more blood and a taste for revenge.
Netflix’s biggest ever series, which launched in September 2021, returns for its second season later this month and it’s just as dystopian, violent and vicious as the first with more than 450 new characters to kill off.
The first season, which scored 14 Emmy nominations including wins for star Lee Jung-jae and creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk for directing, was inspired by the Korean financial collapse.
The world, according to Dong-Hyuk, otherwise known as Director Hwang, is just as screwed up as it previously was, inspiring him to go back to the island for another round of Squid Game.
The second season starts with Seong Gi-hun, otherwise known as Player 456, played by Lee, searching for the people behind the game, three years after winning it. He’s using the ₩45.6 billion prize to fund this search, helped by a large group of ne’er-do-wells and underworld figures,...

In The Acolyte's season series finale, Manny Jacinto's Stranger offered Osha (Amandla Stenberg) one last chance to join him as they left his home. However, it was then we saw a shadowy figure in the cave they'd just been in watching them: Darth Plageuis.
We still don't know whether he's Qimir's secret Master, a rival Sith looking to eliminate a rival, or simply hiding out on a planet which we can now say is almost certainly meant to be Bal'demnic.
What we do know, of course, is that he'll one day become Emperor Palpatine's Master, figuring out how to create life through the Force and perhaps even escape death. Is it possible that Plageuis and Qimir only want Osha to help the Sith Lord one day make Anakin Skywalker?
That and many other unanswered questions will now need to be answered in comic books or novels because The Acolyte...

It’s an understatement to say that anticipation is high for “Squid Game“ Season 2.
More than three years have passed since the South Korean dystopian survival thriller debuted Sept. 17, 2021, quickly ascending to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts and becoming its most popular and most-watched show ever — a distinction it holds to this day. The worldwide acclaim led “Squid Game” to collect dozens of accolades in the year that followed, including historic acting wins at the Emmys, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while also increasing Netflix’s value by almost $1 billion and cementing itself as a ubiquitous global hit, spawning the controversial real-life competition show “Squid Game: The Challenge.”
“Squid Game” mastermind Hwang Dong-hyuk, who initially intended for the Korean-language series about class disparity and economic inequity to be a one-season story, felt immense pressure in crafting a sophomore follow-up — all seven episodes of which drop Dec.

Fans and critics alike praised Netflix’s Squid Game, which went on to become another popular series for the streaming site. It has been a while since we learned that the series will receive a second season, the premiere date of which is coming up very, very soon.
The first season was the result of an almost 10-year creative process undertaken by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator. He couldn’t even imagine that the series would become such a major hit in such a short time and that he would have to write both Seasons 2 and 3 in a record time, which he ultimately did.
In a talk to IndieWire, Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed the creative process behind the second season, but also how the second season, which we are going to see soon, influenced the ending of the series, which we will see in the upcoming third season of the show. Here is the report!

Trust the creator of “Squid Game” to not fold under pressure.
Writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk spent nearly a decade on the story that would become Season 1 of his Netflix drama, but once the series became a smash hit, there were immediate and enthusiastic calls for more. Suddenly, he was set to write and produce not one, but two more seasons of “Squid Game” in record time compared to their predecessor.
“Because I created Season 1 without much thought about doing the second season, when it was decided that we would do Season 2, the pressure was indeed immense,” director Hwang told IndieWire via translator while doing press for “Squid Game 2.” “I was thinking to myself: will I really be able to pull this off? Will I be able to create or write something that would exceed Season 1? But once I got to writing, and once I got into the story of...

It is a habit of some people to get together on Thanksgiving Day and recount a few things to be thankful for. It's a great thing to practice at any time of year, but with Thanksgiving Day in the United States, I thought I would name a few of the things that have me thanking my lucky stars that I'm a Star Wars fan. I hope it makes you think of what would go on your list.
Here are 5 things to be thankful for with Star Wars this year.
1. The Acolyte

A young friend recently asked me if I'd watched The Acolyte and what I thought of it. I told him that I loved it so much that I'd written about it twenty-four times.

In the final episode, Gi-hun decides not to travel to America to reunite with his family, and it's strongly implied that he intends to track down and punish those responsible for planning the games.

It is the fifth video released by Netflix before the premiere.

Player 456 plans to end the Squid Game once and for all — from the inside.
The second season of the global smash-hit Netflix series picks up three years after the first, which is the same length of time between seasons, as Player 456 scratches his plans to settle in the United States. Retirement doesn’t seem to suit Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) — at least, not as well as the green tracksuit. Our hero also ditches the red dye in his hair, a small but helpful cosmetic change as the new baddie of the bunk beds has purple hair. How do we know the purple-haired contestant is a bad guy? Just see what dude does during Red Light, Green Light.
“Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won,” the “Squid Game 2” synopsis reads.

Let the new Squid Game begin … or end?
That’s the question after Seong Gi-hun, a.k.a Player 456, after winning the first season of Squid Game on Netflix, returns to try and end the mysterious survival game where Koreans gamble with their lives once and for all.
Asked at one point in the official trailer that dropped on Tuesday why he’s back in the arena, Player 456, played by Lee Jung-jae, declares: “I’m trying to put an end to this game.” Whether other players opt out and end the survival game that has contenders fighting to the death for a big cash prize promises to be a major theme during the upcoming second season, which bows Dec. 26.
The official synopsis for the second season from Netflix reads: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind.

After the fantastic first season of Squid Game, anticipation is sky-high for season 2. It won’t be easy, but creator Hwang Dong-hyuk seems confident that the new season will live up to the hype with a darker story.
“I believe what we’ve created on Season 2 is a deeper, more advanced story,” Hwang told Empire. “I feel it could even surpass Season 1. But physically, mentally, it was not easy. Some of the sequences we shot were the most challenging in my whole career. It was… hell.” He went on to tease that the second season won’t be a walk in the part. “I even had some concerns because the story told in the second season is much crueller, scarier and more gruesome than the first,” he said. “Honestly, I thought to myself… ‘Is this too much for people to handle?’” Will Squid Game season 2 be the Empire Strikes Back of the series?...
