The long-gestating “Magic: The Gathering” animated series at Netflix is moving forward with a new showrunner.
Terry Matalas is now set as the series’ showrunner, as revealed during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week event. The new take on the series is now in production. The show is produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. Plot details for the new iteration are being kept under wraps.
There had recently been widespread speculation that the show was no longer moving forward at Netflix. Originally announced in 2019, the first iteration of the series was overseen by the Russo brothers of MCU fame. But then Jeff Kline was announced as the new executive producer and creative lead on the show in 2021 after the Russos departed over creative differences, with Brandon Routh being announced as voicing the series lead not long after.
Since then, however, there has been virtually no news about the series.

Netflix is starting again with its animated adaptation of table-top game Magic: The Gathering.
The streamer previously announced a version of the show in 2019 with Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm. The Russos and their team, including head writers Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina, departed early in the process over different visions for how best to adapt the IP. Jeff Kline (Transformers: Prime) took over in August 2021 but he has also now left.
The new showrunner will be Terry Matalas, who was recently named showrunner of Marvel’s Vision series for Disney+.
Brandon Routh was set to voice Gideon Jura in the series, which tells the stories of the Planeswalkers, Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains. He recently said that the show was scrapped.
However, it turns out that this was only partly true; his version, which was written and record has been scrapped but Netflix is going...

The story of the Monkees is well known to any fan of 1960s pop music. Producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, inspired by the freewheeling antics they witnessed in Richard Lester's celebrated 1964 Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night," wanted to capture a similar energy on the small screen. Widespread auditions were held to form a new band that possessed musical talent, but, more importantly, screen chemistry and maybe some acting acumen. The production team was lucky to land one Micky Dolenz, a former child star who appeared on the long-forgotten sitcom "Circus Boy." Davy Jones and Mike Nesmith followed. Peter Tork was suggested by his friend Stephen Stills. While the Monkees did not form organically, they did have chemistry, and possessed humor and acting talent that their less interesting Liverpudlian counterparts never did. Yes, it is now written. The Monkees are, in their way, more interesting than the Beatles.

Change is in the air at one of Hollywood’s preferred stomping grounds.
Gabé Doppelt, who officially replaced Dimitri Dimitrov as Sunset Tower’s resident and beloved maître d’ in October 2018 following a year and a half apprenticeship, is preparing to bid adieu to the iconic property and join hotelier Jeff Klein’s other industry hotspot, San Vicente Bungalows.
Doppelt informed Sunset Tower staff of the job change last Wednesday evening with plenty of warning to let it sink in. Beginning in March 2023, after awards season is over and all the gold has been handed out, Doppelt will segue to San Vincente Bungalows where she’ll focus on membership at the private club.
Per Klein and Doppelt, the move will be part-time at first as she will split focus by training her replacement while also learning the membership world in advance of San Vicente Bungalows’ planned expansion.

A couple of years ago, "Avengers: Endgame" directors Anthony and Joe Russo were attached to oversee an animated Netflix series based on the mega-popular "Magic: The Gathering" franchise. As of a few days ago, the Russo Brothers are no longer involved with the series, but it is still moving forward, now under the direction of executive producer Jeff Kline ("Transformers: Prime"). The animated “Magic: The Gathering” series at Netflix has cast Brandon Routh in the lead role.
The announcement was made during Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Showcase 2021 stream. Plot details on the series are still being kept under wraps, but it was confirmed that Routh will voice the character Gideon Jura. It was previously announced that the show expands on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are the game’s magic-wielding heroes and villains.
In addition, it was announced that a prequel novel by Django Wexler will be released in conjunction with the series, which is slated to debut in 2022.
The novel, which hails from Del Rey Books, sees Planeswalkers Gideon Jura and Jace Beleren adventuring together as they right wrongs across the multiverse. But with very different insights into what they witness, it is safe to say that the partnership is under quite a bit of strain.

Netflix has finally revealed the first voice cast member for its upcoming animated “Magic: The Gathering” TV series, setting “Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh as the voice of Gideon Jura, an “unfalteringly heroic Planeswalker” on the show, which is set to debut in late 2022.
Though Routh is the only voice star to be revealed so far, Wizards of the Coast says “the animated series is currently in full production: all scripts for the first season are written, recorded, and becoming real.”
The announcement came Tuesday, a few days after the reveal that original executive producers Joe and Anthony Russo had exited the series and handed creative control over to new executive producer Jeff Kline (“Transformers: Prime”) and co-executive producer and story editor Steve Melching (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars”), during “Magic: The Gathering” publisher Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Showcase 2021 live stream. We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...
There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.
Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.
Living up to its name, Xgb was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that.

"Bruce Lee will live again."
Darby Pop Publishing and Bruce Lee Entertainment have announced an interesting new comic book series called Bruce Lee: The Dragon Rises. It's a comedy, action, adventure story that will focus on Bruce Lee’s return to present-day.

The comic also features art by Brandon McKinney (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Doberman) and with cover art by Bernard Chang (Green Lantern Corps, Indestructible). This is the plot synopsis:
Bruce Lee never died. And he hasn’t aged. But, he has no idea who he is, what’s happened in the world in the past 40+ years, or why so many “thugs” want a piece of him. With the help of a fly Bff from the ’70s – Joe Toomey, P.I. – and a pair of precocious Teens, Bruce will...

The Hub has officially announced that a new Transformers animated series is in development and that it will be released in 2015. I don't know if you watched Transformers Prime or not, but it was actually really good. I hope this new series turns out to be just as entertaining. Producer Roberto Orci previously talked about the series, saying,
“It’s not really a reboot, it’s sort of a continuation of it [Transformers Prime] in a tonally different form. We want to make sure we’re servicing the right audiences. We got to do a very adult version of Transformers that you just saw in this cartoon, a very sophisticated one, and we also want to make sure we don’t leave other kids behind, who love Transformers too and don’t want to be as scared as Transformers Prime could make you, that kind of thing. So we’re going to...

Science fiction, man. I love it. But comic books make me want to hate it. I mean, I get that comic books aren’t really a literary medium. They can be, but they’re read mostly by people avoiding the commitment and sometimes challenge of a more rigorous, if still speculative, format, namely prose. Now I’m not going to pretend that prose Sf&F is always a step up from comics and, in fact, there’s pretty much an equal ratio of turds to gold (there’s some kind of law for this, I think). But so much more effort is put into the “science” part of science fiction in literature than it is in comics, and that seems to be an unfortunate result of the assumption (perhaps correctly) most comic book writers make that their audience isn’t interested in “harder” sci-fi or fantasy. But they try at it anyway sometimes,...

Transformers Prime final season (Season 3) begins Friday, March 22, at 7:30pm Et on The Hub. (A four-hour marathon precedes the premiere, beginning at 3:30pm Et) I try to go into every interview remembering those lessons in journalism school about objectivity. Just how in sportswriting there’s no cheering in the press box, it’s a bit unprofessional to let your fan flag fly when talking to actors, writers and producers, even when they might be involved in something that strikes a deep chord from childhood. So when I get Jeff Kline on the phone to talk about Season 3 of Transformers Prime [...]...

Season two of the epic Hub TV show focuses on the battle between rival factions of an alien race of robots known as Transformers. Optimus Prime and the heroic Autobots take on Megatron and the evil Decepticons. Includes all 26 episodes of the second season.
The Delivery
There have been so many incarnations of Transformers over the years, but Generation One, the original series, still holds a special place in the hearts of hard core fans. Transformers Prime, however, may eventually become the definitive version of the brand. Combining the best aspects of the original 1980s animated series (including the voices of Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and Frank Welker as Megatron) with the look and music cues of the modern films, Transformers Prime is a...

The Movie Pool finds more than meets the eye to the Transformers Rescue Bots: Roll to the Rescue DVD!
The Set-up
A band of Transformers with rescue abilities is assigned by Optimus Prime to protect the town of Griffin Rock. From the Hub TV network show.
The Delivery
A kinder, gentler version of Transformers geared towards younger kids, Rescue Bots is a well-done, entertaining cartoon that is perfect for the 7 to 12-year-olds it aims for.
The new show focuses on a new group of Transformers called Rescue Bots, who come to Earth after getting the signal sent out by Optimus Prime. With skills made for rescue operations, Prime assigns them to work undercover as rescue vehicles in the town of Griffin Rock. Chase, Heatwave, Blades, and Boulder are the led characters here, although Optimus Prime does show up in cameos.
The animation is surprisingly well done, and doesn't appear cheap like so many current cartoons.

The Movie Pool goes Awol for the G.I. Joe: Renegades Season One Blu-ray!
The Set-up
This latest incarnation of the iconic G.I. Joe franchise follows a group of modern-day soldiers who go rogue after being framed as terrorists by an evil corporation called Cobra.
The Delivery
This Blu-ray set includes all 26 episodes of the outstanding animated series that premiered in November 2010 on The Hub TV network. Our initial review of the Renegades Season One, Volume One DVD set (which you can read here) pointed out a lot that we liked about this new take on G.I. Joe, and some things that we didn't like. Thankfully, having taken in a full season of the show, the pluses far outweigh the minuses.

The Movie Pool rolls out the new Transformers Prime: One Shall Stand DVD!
The Set-up
Megatron joins forces with the Autobots to battle Unicron, whose presence threatens every life on Earth.
The Delivery
This epic story arc includes seven episodes of Transformers Prime, and is better than any of the plots for the Transformers movies. Incredibly well written, the storyline is intelligent and told with plenty of drama and emotion, something other incarnations of Transformers have failed to do.
CGI animation often feels a bit cold and calculated, devoid of a soul. When it comes to animated robots, the emotional disconnection can be even more apparent. The Prime incarnation manages to work thanks to combination of great writing and good voice acting. Sure, these are still a bunch of robots blowing stuff up, but you connect with their personalities and like them.

Transformers truly are a toy and movie franchise that bridge generation gaps. As a 28-year old industry, it gives parents who grew up with the "Robots in Disguise" a way to geek out with their children. The Autobots and Decepticons are more popular now than they've ever been after three blockbuster movies and a successful weekly CG television series still airing. Shout! Factory's Transformers Prime: One Shall Stand is made up of seven episodes of that successful show melded together into one seamless film.
Humankind is once again threatened by Megatron and his Decepticons as the diabolical leader continues to seek for the way to unlock the powers of Dark Energon. Optimus Prime and the Autobots must come head to head with the evil robots before Megatron can discover its full potential. At the same time, a more sinister threat is discovered at the center of the Earth... Unicron.

I hope you’ve had a chance to catch this terrific animated series on The Hub, now in its second season. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, the Transformers feature films, Fringe), it received a 2011 Daytime Emmy for Background Design and Color Design, and nominations for writing, directing, music direction and composition, and Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for the legendary Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime – yes, the same man who gave his voice to Prime in the movies and video games.
So it looks great, it sounds great, and it has some good solid storylines. You’ll also recognize some of the other voice actors: Jeffrey Combs (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as Ratchet, Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2) as Agent Fowler, and Markie Post (Murphy Brown) as Jack’s mom June, and recurring guest voices including Firefly castmates Adam Baldwin as Breakdown and Gina Torres as Airachnid.

Over at the official Transformers Facebook page, Jeff Kline - executive producer of the successful TV show Transformers: Prime - revealed that the second season won't premiere on November 28th, 2011 as previously rumored. He says that the season will debut on The Hub early 2012, perhaps late January/early February (there isn't a specific date yet). Check out what he had to say below on the Fb page (click the link below to read the entire Q&A session)... No specific date yet, but keep an eye out for more news soon. We do know it will be "early 2012." I’m hoping that means late January or early February, but the truth is that the folks making the series are often so narrow-focused—with nearly an entire season in various stages of production simultaneously—that we tend to not be as up-to-speed on scheduling or promotional agendas as you might think!

Autobots, prepare yourselves for the Transformers to hit San Diego Comic-Con with Transformers: Prime! And this time, we promise no Shia Labeouf.
Transformers: Prime will host its very own panel this year, taking place on Thursday, July 21st from 3:30pm - 4:30pm in Room 24Abc, but the real questions lies in what we might see. Footage from the new season seems like a strong possibility, given the show's been renewed for sixty-five episodes.
Could there also be new characters introduced or previewed? Let's see who'll be on hand to give us all the answers!

Can’t wait for Michael Bay’s third Transformers movie, or maybe you prefer the Transformers in cartoon form? Although we're still a few months away from Michael Bay's third live action Transformers movie adventure, "Dark of the Moon," fans looking to satisfy their 'bot fix can tune into a CGI animated series for the small screen, "Transformers: Prime," on The Hub (Discovery and Hasbro's kid friendly, joint network venture) when it premieres next Friday, February 11.

In an effort to bolster its television presence, Hasbro Studios announced Thursday that it has signed writer-executive producer Jeff Kline to a series development and producing deal. There's a great spoof video that's floating around the web called "The Making of Transformers Prime" that, even though it's for a TV show, is still worth mentioning. You see, Transformers Prime is the new Hub TV Transformers (robots in disguise!) animated series that debuts this Monday, November 29th. Two of the creators are writers and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who you know from Michael Bay's Transformers and Star Trek, and they put together an amusing behind-the-scenes video with exec producer Jeff Kline taking a look making the show. Whether you're a Transformers fan or not, you've got to see this! One of my favorite lines: "Save that for movies, okay, this actually has to be good!" Ouch! Hah, I love these guys, what a hilarious way to virally promote the show. I actually really want to watch this now! The footage at the end looks pretty good,...
