- He was a member of the crew of the British destroyer HMS Tartar when that ship took part in the pursuit and destruction of the German battleship Bismarck in May of 1941. He later wrote a book on the subject.

- He took the title of his autobiography, "On My Way to the Club", from a review that said of the Eton-educated Kennedy's TV presenting style, "He gives me the impression that he has been good enough to drop by to see if he can lend a hand while on his way to the club".
