Poker Face is prepping for a big return in 2025, so here's a quick reminder of how this quirky Peacock mystery series unfolded in season 1.
Created by Riann Johnson, Poker Face is basically a love letter to the TV mystery movies of the 1970s. The pilot introduced us to Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a Vegas card shark with a sardonic attitude. She's enlisted by Sterling Frost Jr (Adrian Brody), son of a powerful mobster and casino boss who wants to use Charlie in a classic setup of being a "ringer" for a rich guy and bilk him in a card game.
Charlie, you see, has a unique talent. For reasons she can't explain, she's a living lie detector. Somehow, some way, she always knows when someone is lying and will call them on it. That's a boon for a card player and why she was banned from playing before Sterling Jr.

Jinkies indeed! After two divisive seasons, Max won’t be renewing Mindy Kaling’s adult animated series Velma for another season. The show, starring Kaling as the voice of Velma Dinkley, lasted for two seasons before Max ripped off its mask, revealing a cancelation notice where a mustache-twirling villain’s head should be. The cancelation of Velma hits hard for fans of the series who genuinely enjoy Kaling’s unique spin on the Scooby gang and their darkly-themed misadventures.
“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” Max said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”

Velma Dinkley has solved her last mystery (for now).
Max has canceled its animated series Velma after two seasons. The show’s second season debuted in April, and a Halloween special that premiered on Oct. 3 marks the final outing for the show.
Velma, created by Charlie Grandy (The Office, The Mindy Project), is a more adult-oriented prequel/reimagining of the brainy Scooby-Doo character. Mindy Kaling (who’s also an executive producer) voices Velma, who’s haunted by the disappearance of her mother and dealing with the perils of being a teenager along with solving mysteries.

Like most people without easy access to the West End and Broadway, I did not get the full measure of Dame Maggie Smith's genius as a performer. This is true of many great actors who found their way to film and television from the boards, and it is why I am often reluctant to enter arguments over or make lists ranking the greatest actors of all time. Theatrical performance requires a flexing of radically different muscles; you must fill the space, or recede from it, or mingle harmoniously within it without the emotive aid of close-ups and cutting. And you must play each role every night for weeks upon weeks (upon weeks should the show become a hit) while remaining in moments that cannot be manufactured – because an astute audience (and they'd better be good and goddamn astute given what they're paying to see a show in either of...

Filming on the sixth and final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” has, at long last, begun, Hulu announced on Friday. The network shared a photo of star Elisabeth Moss, who’s also directing and holding a clapboard, with the note that the Emmy-winning series will return in spring of 2025.
It’s been nearly two years since the Season 5 finale and a year-and-a-half since executive producers Erich Tuchman and Yahlin Chang were named co-showrunners for Season 6.
Longtime showrunner and series creator Bruce Miller stepped away from the drama after five seasons to focus on the development of its upcoming sequel series “The Testaments,” which like “Handmaid’s Tale” is based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. It’s set 15 years after the events of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Miller is still involved with the final season as an executive producer and writer.

Rian Johnson celebrated the the first day of filming the sophomore season on Monday, sharing a photo of the show’s clapboard, which listed Lyonne as the director for episode two.
“Day one season two,” wrote Johnson on his Instagram Story.
Inspired by the inverted detective format of Columbo and similarly described by Johnson as a “howcatchem” (as opposed to the “whodunit” structure of Knives Out and Glass Onion), Poker Face follows Vegas casino worker and human bullshit detector Charlie Cale (Lyonne) as she runs from the mob while solving a string of murders along the way.

Sixteen years after his Broadway debut, Daniel Radcliffe has won a Tony Award. Although Broadway fans have known all season long that the actor would likely take home the trophy for his featured turn in the revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along,” his victory comes with great relief for those who have watched the star miss out on a number of nominations in the past.
Radcliffe’s career on Broadway began in 2008 when he took the stage in a revival of “Equus.” The production earned two Tony Award nominations for lighting design and sound design – it won the latter for Gregory Clarke – but was left out of the major categories including for Radcliffe’s leading performance.
The actor made his return only two years later in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in the role of J. Pierrepont Finch. The character won...

Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.

The HBO drama took home the big prize — Outstanding Drama Series — at the Emmys on January 15 for the fourth and final season of the buzzy hit.

Culkin was previously nominated twice for an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Emmy for his work on the show. For the fourth and final season of the HBO hit, both Culkin and co-star Sarah Snook changed from the Supporting to Lead categories. For Culkin, at least, the move paid off.
The show is up for 26 Emmy nominations this year, including individual ones for basically all the cast: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Culkin, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Alexander Skarsgård, J. Smith-Cameron, James Cromwell, Arian Moayed, Hiam Abbass, Cherry Jones, and Harriet Walter.

Nick Offerman and Storm Reid were big winners at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday, winning guest actor and actress in a drama series, respectively.
Nick Offerman, winning for The Last of Us, was nominated against Murray Bartlett (The Last of Us), James Cromwell (Succession), Lamar Johnson (The Last of Us), Arian Moayed (Succession) and Keivonn Montreal Woodard (The Last of Us).
Reid, also recognized for her work in The Last of Us, was nominated alongside Hiam Abbass (Succession), Cherry Jones (Succession), Melanie Lynskey (The Last of Us), Anna Torv (The Last of Us) and Harriet Walter (Succession).
Reid, accepting from presenter Ernie Hudson, was in tears for her speech, telling the crowd, “I’m such a mess. 30 seconds is just not enough time!” before thanking her team, family and friends, with a special shoutout to her mother. “This is proof you can do anything. Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”) won the trophy for Best Drama Guest Actress. She plays Riley Abel on the HBO drama series, and this marks her first career victory (on her first nomination) with the Television Academy.
After being delayed since September due to the writers’ strike and actors’ strike, the Creative Arts Emmys for scripted fare finally took place on Saturday, January 6, with more awards for unscripted programs being doled out on Sunday, January 7. The official Primetime Emmys ceremony will air on Fox next Monday, January 15 with Anthony Anderson serving as host.
Reid’s episode, titled “Left Behind,” is a flashback entry focusing on lead character Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) past. It primarily functions as a two-hander in which the tight-knit military school roommates realize just how deeply they care for each other while covertly spending a night alone in a deserted shopping mall.

This year’s Best Drama Guest Actress category at the Emmys is a tightly-knit affair with only two shows — “Succession” and “The Last of Us,” both HBO projects — reaping nominations. “Succession” landed three bids for Harriet Walter, Hiam Abbass, and Cherry Jones, while “The Last of Us” produced nominations for Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, and Anna Torv.
SEEPeter Hoar (‘The Last of Us’ director) on aligning ‘with a story that really talks to you and speaks from the heart’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Torv, like her co-star Reid and “Succession” contender Abbass, is a first-time Emmy nominee after working in the industry for years. She features in three episodes of “The Last of Us” as Theresa “Tess” Servopoulos. Her nominated episode is “Infected,” which is the second episode of the series and features the character’s climactic death (Torv also appears in the third episode during flashbacks). As such, this is an emotional Emmy...

After a 28-year-old Lee You-mi (“Squid Game”) set a new record in 2022 as the all-time youngest Emmy winner for guest acting, she could be supplanted by Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), who became a first-time Emmy nominee mere days after turning 20. Like Lee (who isn’t eligible for a repeat win), Reid is seeking the Best Drama Guest Actress prize for her portrayal of a likable, ill-fated character on a new series with a contemporary, dystopian setting. Given her show’s even greater level of TV academy recognition compared to “Squid Game” last year, Reid could very well be on her way toward a historic victory.

Kathleen Coghlan may have met her demise in the first season of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” but the woman who plays her, Melanie Lynskey, is stronger than ever at the Emmys. After landing her long-overdue first nomination last year, for her lead performance on the Showtime hit “Yellowjackets,” the New Zealander added not one, but two bids to her tally this past July, including one for her sinister guest turn on “The Last of Us.”
As Kathleen, the ruthless leader of a resistance group that freed Kansas City from military rule, Lynskey appears in the fourth and fifth episodes of the post-apocalyptic drama, of which the latter, “Endure and Survive,” serves as her Emmy submission. After it’s made clear that Kathleen will stop at nothing to hunt down and execute the man (Best Drama Guest Actor nominee Lamar Johnson) who ratted out her resistance leader brother, she...
