Poker Face is prepping for a big return in 2025, so here's a quick reminder of how this quirky Peacock mystery series unfolded in season 1.

Created by Riann Johnson, Poker Face is basically a love letter to the TV mystery movies of the 1970s. The pilot introduced us to Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a Vegas card shark with a sardonic attitude. She's enlisted by Sterling Frost Jr (Adrian Brody), son of a powerful mobster and casino boss who wants to use Charlie in a classic setup of being a "ringer" for a rich guy and bilk him in a card game.

Charlie, you see, has a unique talent. For reasons she can't explain, she's a living lie detector. Somehow, some way, she always knows when someone is lying and will call them on it. That's a boon for a card player and why she was banned from playing before Sterling Jr.

After its Season 2 renewal in February 2023, Rian Johnson’s and Natasha Lyonne’s Poker Face the case-of-the-week mystery series is back in production for its next installment.

Season 1 of the Peacock show featured 10 episodes of Lyonne’s Charlie Cale, a Vegas casino worker whose keen sense of honesty leads to a Columbo-style show and reverse detective format. Johnson, who also has Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery in the works with a stacked cast, describes the show as a “howcatchem” versus a “whodunit” which is the format of the Knives Outand Glass Onion films.

The streamer has opted not to renew the “Scooby-Doo” series for Season 3. The news comes months after the adult animated series, which starred and was executive produced by Mindy Kaling, debuted its second season in late April.

“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” a spokesperson for Max said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues and hilarious hijinks.”

Max has canceled its animated series Velma after two seasons. The show’s second season debuted in April, and a Halloween special that premiered on Oct. 3 marks the final outing for the show.

Velma, created by Charlie Grandy (The Office, The Mindy Project), is a more adult-oriented prequel/reimagining of the brainy Scooby-Doo character. Mindy Kaling (who’s also an executive producer) voices Velma, who’s haunted by the disappearance of her mother and dealing with the perils of being a teenager along with solving mysteries.

In the wake of two seasons and a just-released Halloween special, it appears that Max’s adult animated Scooby-Doo series “Velma” has been cancelled by the Warner Bros. streamer.

Background artist Davey Cummings shares on Instagram this week, “There will not be a Season 3, but I hope I get to work with these amazing talented people again one day.”

Natasha Lyonne is back in the driver’s seat as her Peacock procedural Poker Face begins production on Season 2.

Rian Johnson celebrated the the first day of filming the sophomore season on Monday, sharing a photo of the show’s clapboard, which listed Lyonne as the director for episode two.

“Day one season two,” wrote Johnson on his Instagram Story.

Exclusive: Film Movement has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to the acclaimed documentary Obsessed with Light, which explores the influence of one of the most remarkable figures in American arts – dancer-choreographer Loïe Fuller.

Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum directed the film, which premiered at the 2023 Rome Film Festival and has screened at Doc NYC, Hamptons Doc Fest, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Cleveland International Film Festival. “Hacks” is back, and Max has revealed the official trailer and key art for the show’s long-awaited Season 3. The new installment of “Hacks,” which Variety chronicled in this recent feature, returns on Thursday, May 2, with two episodes on Max. The nine-episode season will continue with two episodes each week, up until the season finale on May 30.

Max has set an April 25, 2024 premiere date for season two of Velma. Mindy Kaling returns to voice the titular character in the 10-episode second season from Warner Bros. Animation.

When the adult animated series returns for its sophomore run, Velma (voiced by Mindy Kaling, who also executive-produces the show) will find herself investigating another spooky mystery in Crystal Cove.

Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley got her own “adult animated series” over on Max last year, and we’ve learned today that “Velma” Season 2 will premiere on April 25, 2024.

“Velma” is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang.

Here’s the official synopsis for “Velma” Season 2: “When an even spookier mystery grips Crystal Cove, Velma (Mindy Kaling) must find a way to balance her detective work with the demands of her newfound popularity before it’s too late. Meanwhile, her faithful friends Daphne (Constance Wu), Norville (Sam Richardson), and Fred (Glenn Howerton) are powerless to help thanks to their own personal battles and worse… Detention.”

Season 2 will feature Ten brand new episodes.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has rounded out the ensemble cast for Season 3 of sci-fi series Foundation with new series regulars. Game of Thrones alum Pilou Asbæk joins the series in a recasting as Warlord aka The Mule, taking over for Mikael Persbrandt, who recurred as the character in Season 2. He joins Emmy winner Cherry Jones (Succession), Synnøve Karlsen (Last Night in Soho), Cody Fern (American Horror Story), Brandon P. Kieran Culkin quipped to his wife onstage that he’s ready to grow their family following his first-ever Emmy win on Monday night’s 2023 Emmys.

“My beautiful wife, Jazz, thank you for sharing your life with me and giving me two amazing kids, Kinsey Sioux and Wilder Wolf, I love you so many and so much,” Culkin said from the stage. “And Jazz: I want more. You said maybe if I win.”

The HBO drama took home the big prize — Outstanding Drama Series — at the Emmys on January 15 for the fourth and final season of the buzzy hit.

Prior to this year, “Succession” had already won 13 Emmys. This year, it scored 26 nominations, including individual ones for basically all the cast: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Alexander Skarsgård, J. “Succession” previously won the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy in 2022 (for Season 3) and 2020 (Season 2) and was nominated for Season 1 in 2019. The actor took home his first individual Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Roman Roy on “Succession.” The actor won a Golden Globe last weekend for the same performance.

Culkin was previously nominated twice for an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Emmy for his work on the show. For the fourth and final season of the HBO hit, both Culkin and co-star Sarah Snook changed from the Supporting to Lead categories. For Culkin, at least, the move paid off.

The delayed 2023 Emmy Awards are airing tonight, and it might be months since you’ve seen the list of nominees!

The nominations were announced all the way back in July 2023, but due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that were happening at the time, the 2023 show was delayed. It normally would have aired in September 2023, but instead, is airing tonight (January 15).

In order to be eligible for this year’s awards, TV shows needed to air between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023.

Nick Offerman and Storm Reid were big winners at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday, winning guest actor and actress in a drama series, respectively.

Nick Offerman, winning for The Last of Us, was nominated against Murray Bartlett (The Last of Us), James Cromwell (Succession), Lamar Johnson (The Last of Us), Arian Moayed (Succession) and Keivonn Montreal Woodard (The Last of Us).

Reid, also recognized for her work in The Last of Us, was nominated alongside Hiam Abbass (Succession), Cherry Jones (Succession), Melanie Lynskey (The Last of Us), Anna Torv (The Last of Us) and Harriet Walter (Succession).

Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”) won the trophy for Best Drama Guest Actress. She plays Riley Abel on the HBO drama series, and this marks her first career victory (on her first nomination) with the Television Academy.

After being delayed since September due to the writers’ strike and actors’ strike, the Creative Arts Emmys for scripted fare finally took place on Saturday, January 6, with more awards for unscripted programs being doled out on Sunday, January 7. The official Primetime Emmys ceremony will air on Fox next Monday, January 15 with Anthony Anderson serving as host.

Reid’s episode, titled “Left Behind,” is a flashback entry focusing on lead character Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) past. It primarily functions as a two-hander in which the tight-knit military school roommates realize just how deeply they care for each other while covertly spending a night alone in a deserted shopping mall.
