  • The Thing (1982)

    1. The Thing

    8.2 (499K)
A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.
    DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith David
+'s: One of the best plots I've seen in horror. Edge-of-your-seat thrills that will keep you guessing. Great special effects that are downright freaky. Perfect for those who love sci-fi horrors. Without a doubt, my personal favorite.

-'s: Main Thing fight at the end was kinda short, and a little ridiculous.

Most memorable scene: The blood test.

Best quote: "You gotta be *beep* kidding..."
Most memorable quote: "Now I'll show you what I already know."

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore factor: 9/10
    Scare factor: 10/10

After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.
    DirectorOren PeliStarsKatie FeatherstonMicah SloatMark Fredrichs
+'s: Impressive special effects that are genuinely scary. Realistic acting and human behavior. Great tense building film. Most scares don't try to jump in your face and scream "Here I am!!!" (like most horrors nowadays). The film does a great job with subtle, but freaky scares. Original.

-'s: Beginning might be a tad slow for many viewers.

Most memorable scene: Getting dragged out of bed.

Best quote: "Nobody comes in my house, *beep* with my girlfriend, and gets away with it."

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore factor: 2/10
    Scare factor: 9.5/10
  • Alien (1979)

    DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn Hurt
+'s: What's better than a survival horror in space against the scariest monster of all time? The main + is that if you like horror movies, there's no way you can dislike this movie.

-'s: What -'s? Seriously, this movie is flawless.

Most memorable scene: What else would it be? The chest-bursting scene.

Most memorable quote: "We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space."

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore factor: 6.5/10

Two men awaken to find themselves on the opposite sides of a dead body, each with specific instructions to kill the other, escape or face the consequences. These two are the latest contestants in Jigsaw's games.
    DirectorJames WanStarsCary ElwesLeigh WhannellDanny Glover
+'s: I think we all know why the Saw series is popular. The first is still the best, with its clever plot and theologies. One of my favorite movie twists too. Now for some people this may be a "-". but it's also the least gory out of all the Saw movies. Acting was noticeably good too.

-'s: Not much to complain about, except maybe it was a little jumpy storywise and as far as editing goes.

Most memorable scene: The twist! Holy crap I never saw it coming...

Best quote: 'I want to play a game."

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore factor: 8/10
    Scare factor: 5/10

    DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny Lloyd
+'s: Creepy atmosphere, tension builds for a long time towards a scary and intense climax. Acting is noticeably impressive. Very unsettling and creepy. Stephen King wrote this.

-'s: People who get bored easily may not like a good chunk of the movie. But that's really not the movie's fault....

Most memorable scene: It's got many, but my favorite was when you found out what "redrum" meant.

Best Quote (big "duh"): "Heeeeeeere's Johnny!"

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore factor: 4/10
    Scare factor: 7/10
  • The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

    DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna Hutchison
+'s: Downright funny, creepy, intense, original and entertaining. It pleasures the morbid and satisfies the need to see fun deaths. Great and unexpected scenes, just a full out blast of fun. DEFINITELY a movie to see with large crowds. Great plot, and great characters.

-'s: I want more!!! And there probably won't be any more!

    Most memorable scene: The PURGE

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore Factor: 10/10
Scare Factor: 6/10 (for people not used to horror, it CAN get really intense)

+'s: One of the greatest milestones in horror, and in cinema history. Great plot, great acting, tense and thrilling. A fine masterpiece in the art of building suspense and chilling your bones.

-'s: Might be a bit disturbing if you don't like to see children getting killed.

Most memorable scene: The calm before the storm during the final hunt for the shark.

Best quote: "You're gonna need a bigger boat....."

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore factor: 3.5/10

  • Isabelle Fuhrman in Orphan (2009)

    8. Orphan

    20092h 3m1542Metascore
    7.0 (267K)
A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she appears.
    DirectorJaume Collet-SerraStarsVera FarmigaPeter SarsgaardIsabelle Fuhrman
+'s: Seems like a cliché movie, but it's not. It's tense because it centers around children, which is scary for a lot of people, especially parents. In other words, the scare tactic seems more genuine and real. Again, great plot and great acting. Very gripping. The girl, Esther, is entertainingly EVIL, well developed, and the actress did an amazing job.

-'s: A bit predictable at times

Most memorable scene: When Esther appears to be contemplating, while switching on and off her black light, illuminating both her faked innocence side, and her psychotic side off her painting.

Best quote: (from Esther, While pointing a gun at a child's head) "Do you want to play?"

    My overall vote: 10/10
    Gore factor: 4/10
Scare factor: 8/10 (lower if you're not like me, where your level of fear is amped up whenever children are put in harm's way)
  • Natalie Mendoza, Shauna Macdonald, Saskia Mulder, Alex Reid, Nora-Jane Noone, and MyAnna Buring in The Descent (2005)

+'s: Works extremely well at giving a claustrophobic feel to the movie. Gripping events, great acting, original. The creatures aren't CGI like in "I Am Legend".

-'s: Some of what happens might be considered unrealistic or far-fetched. But keep in mind it's sci-fi

    DirectorGreg McLeanStarsNathan PhillipsCassandra MagrathKestie Morassi
+'s: Intense, well directed, and the killer is one of the scariest and most underrated in horror cinema. Very menacing, and scary. The acting is also top notch, very upsetting to watch. GREAT build-up.

-'s: Questionable ending, but still, you gotta give it some credit for originality and mystery.

Most memorable scene: It's not a scene that's most memorable, it's the killer Mick Taylor's haunting laugh!!!

Best quote: "I'm going to do something now they used to do in Vietnam. It's called making a head on a stick." - Mick Taylor

    My overall vote: 9.5/10
    Gore factor: 5/10
    Scare factor: 7.5/10
  • Heather Langenkamp in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

    DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert Englund
+'s: You can't get more classic of a slasher than this. It's pure 80's horror, with gripping special effects, terrifying characters, and an effective stable plot with horrifying deaths. And the killer is one-of-a-kind.

-'s: Special effects a little out-dated now, but that's the only downside, which I don't even consider a downside, but some may.

Most memorable scene: the blood fountain

    My overall vote: 9.5/10
    Gore factor: 8/10
    Scare factor: 8/10

-'s: cliché lines and some scenes don't quite reach their full potential.

Most memorable scene: The ok-let's-cut-your-arm-off scene

Best quote: "help can't even help us."

    My overall vote: 9.5/10
    Gore factor: 8/10
    Scare factor: 6/10
