This movie really was a total surprise for me. I mean its existance. Apparently its from 2023 but i had no idea it existed. Never saw it pass on my usual streaming/buying markets (in Canada) or physical or anything.
I looked at the trailer on Youtube and was immediately reminded of the comedy style i loved from the early 2000s to mid 2010s before eveything got woke. So hey lets goooo.
Overall i would say the movie get points for creativity. Yes it does remind me a bit of that Jennifer Lawrence movie call "No Hard Feelings" mixed with some 21 Jumpstreet. The premise is great. Not totally original sure, but the concept of someone who graduated from university having to go back to watch on their boss son and make them "cooler" while also having been quite the party animal in their own time was a recipe for laugh.
Will this evolve into a romcom and they develop a love story? Or they have more of a big sis/little bro relationship? Or will they just become best bud of debauchery? The possibilities are plenty.
But as the movie start it open on a few very woke line and right away i was rolling my eyes. And just like the movie i watched a couple days ago there is a relationship that is completely far fetch and would never happen if it was not a movie. At least his time it was not really a plot point but just an intro that didn't matter. Still it felt just totally placed to "score acceptance points".
There is also a few lines telling us (cause i do think these type of lines are only directed at the audience) how something is "not ok" and shouldn't be said. But thanksfully this happen early in the movie and it seem to tone down "the message" after. That said as a fan of raunchy comedies for over 20 years, im sorry but these movies are not made for "modern audiences" (that wouldn't watch them anyway) and you should fully embrace the raunch and not try to put a message in it.
With that said, was the rest of the movie alright? Yeah... more or less.
Like any raunchy comedies (using the term loosely) set in university there is a bunch of nonsense, but this is the kinda stuff you have to accept before watching a movie like that. Its part of the package in a way.
Acting wise and character wise, i think everyone did a fair job. The story as i said earlier in the review could go many different routes and ill let you discover wich one it does. But for me, it was satisfying.
I do think there should had been a few more truly laughable situations or situations where the "good guys" (aka who we follow) are pit against the "bad guys". It only happen a few times and its rather brief and does not really lead to uber laughing moments.
If anything thats probably where the movie is a bit too much at fault. There is not enough truly big laugh moments, not enough "raunch" either, so ultimately its like it can't really decide or commit on what it try to be. Probably to not offend anyone.
Overall did i enjoyed this movie? Yeah...barely... Just enough to get a 6 out of 10. But from the trailer i was expecting to get a raunchy comedy out of 2012 without any concerns for "modern audiences" or such. Just a good ol's frat party comedy without any restrictions... Sadly this is not it.
It has "the structure" of it, but not the core that make one. I wish these types of movies would return to what they used to be in the 2000s and 2010s.
