"My Mistress" is a film about a woman who works as a dominatrix, a profession she pursues for money while also dealing with her personal struggles. She faces family issues, much like anyone else, which brings to mind the concept of the "unhappy clown." Many clowns we see perform to make others laugh and appear to be in a cheerful mood, but we know that their profession is rooted in earning a living. Behind their smiles, they may be dealing with the same life challenges we all face. The film underscores an important point: a person may be a professional manipulator of emotions, yet not experience those emotions in the way they appear to on the surface.
There are very few characters in the film, but the performances of all the actors are commendable. The lush green gardens and the spacious house, with its minimalist furnishings, create a serene atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the deeply disturbing tragedies experienced by a sixteen-year-old boy. This juxtaposition draws the viewer in, keeping their attention throughout the entire film.
