- In this, the Christmas season, out of town family members are slowly descending back on their respective family homes in the cul-de-sac. While there are some things that seemingly never change, such as the Manetti-Hanahans' over-the-top light display and the Camarenas quietly or not so quietly seething about it, those returns will lead to the revelation of some not yet divulged issues from the past year, some of those issues happening within the cul-de-sac by the residents and some happening in the lives of the returnees. In addition, Josh Hill, in his return before moving permanently to Sydney, can't seem to stop running into Nora Jacobs, an acquaintance from high school in her current capacity as the town's sheriff, their encounters, seemingly at least from Josh's perspective, not helped by their opposite attitudes in adhering to or bending the rules, including the law in these instances. And while most are happy to see their relations, subdued Lucy Woods is less than thrilled that her free-spirited force-of-nature sister Sylvie Woods has decided to spend the holidays with her.
- Josh Hill is starting his community service, something that Sheriff Nora Jacobs arranged as a favor to him instead of the standard court appearance in light of he and Stacy imminently moving to Sydney. Josh still sees it as an unnecessary imposition on his life and a worse option than paying a fine, which in this case is not even an option. That service is helping set up the Christmas display at the community center. While he is initially designated to help with trimming the trees, he, with the blessing of all concerned, ends up spending most of his time helping Theo, widowed Nora's son, in his entry for the Christmas ornament competition. Trimming the trees may have been easier as Theo has something very specific in mind which he can only articulate by how it is supposed to make one feel. As Josh works with Theo and by association Nora, he may get a better understanding of his own work and relationship with Stacy, as well as his relationship with his parents onto who he always tries to impose his own misguided sensibilities.
- At the Lin house, Ny-Ny (Grandmother Lin) unexpectedly is staying for Christmas, which is when Steve found the first flight for her to Palm Springs. With the collective at the house, she openly surmises that Marcus and Ella are engaged to each other, which Marcus is dismayed to see that no one, including Ella, has corrected her in Ted still being in the closet with her. While Steve, Lois, Ella and Ted all have different reasons for hiding his sexuality from her, Ted's which includes the fear of their relationship changing in he being the heir apparent to lead her family business, the one common factor is their fear of her. Ted, Steve and Lois are able to convince Marcus and Ella to go along with the ruse, which they would have to do for the few days until Ny-Ny leaves. But maintaining the story only gets more complicated as Ny-Ny takes it upon herself to be their wedding planner, regardless of how distant that wedding, as they tell her, is in the future.
- Lucy's passive/aggressive animosity toward Sylvie partially melts as Sylvie, who reminds her sister that she is already in a relationship with Christoph and thus is not after Cole, helps her advance Lucy and Cole's obvious attraction for each other, obvious at least to outsiders, but which is still at a stage of Lucy not wanting to make her feelings toward him obvious to him, yet wanting something to happen between them. In that vein, Sylvie is able to use a structural issue at the bakery to her advantage in her Lucy/Cole mission. And as Sylvie discovers the "Joy box" hidden away in Lucy's house, Joy being Lucy and Sylvie's long deceased free-spirited mother after who Sylvie more resembles emotionally and the Nana Annie never met and has heard little about, Sylvie take the further opportunity to be Annie's fun aunt in helping her in her first case of puppy love with longtime friend Max, who Annie fears is more interested in Stephanie Gisondi as girlfriend material, and to push her position as minor shareholder and thus silent partner at the bakery to be not so silent in an effort to support Lucy. That wall between between the sisters has the potential to go back up as Sylvie's efforts have mixed results, their problems at least from Lucy's perspective all stemming back to Joy's passing and its immediate aftermath.
