- After a long time in the Army, an African-American soldier returns to his hometown, where, years ago, his brother was executed for the rape and murder of two white girls. The commando believes his brother to have been innocent, and seeks a proof for that, but there are some people in the town who will stop at nothing to hide the secrets of their past.
- Louis Gossett, Jr. and Gena Rowlands find themselves in a dispute over the custody of a young adorable bi-racial girl, who just happens to be their grandchild. The child's (Jacey's) parents are Gossett's son and Rowland's daughter, and have died in a tragic accident leaving the granddaughter's custody up in the air. Both grandparents want custody, but Rowlands is an older Southern woman who still easily sees the difference between black and white, and it is deeper than just skin color. Gossett is also older and not without his preconceived notions of whites either, but together, they get to know each other as people, not stereotypes, through the love of a grandchild.

- Truth is stranger than fiction. Olympic gold medal hurdler Gail Devers almost lost her feet to a mysterious disease after being picked for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. She failed to qualify for the finals as the disease (Graves Disease) left her feet swollen, cracked, and oozing blood. After two years, doctors were on the verge of amputating when it was discovered that radiation treatment was making it worse. Gail Devers eventually recovered and went on to win the one hundred meter in Barcelona. She might have won the one hundred meter hurdles if she hadn't tripped on the final hurdle. She also competed in and won the sprint at Atlanta.
- Postal inspectors (Louis Gossett, Jr. and Jonathan Silverman) investigate a con man (Michael Madsen) who uses the identities of others to falsify credit card purchases. Stealing credit card offers from mail boxes, he obtains cards in others' names, makes many purchases until the card is maxed out, but is always careful to pay minimum balances. According to the story, it is possible for individuals such as this to run many credit cards at a time without being caught.
- A lawyer trying to cope with his son's accidental death takes on a case where a farmer is charged with booby trapping a watermelon patch with a shotgun which went off and injured a young boy. But in choosing to defend the farmer, he puts himself at odds with the boy's father, an old friend who is politically influential. In dealing with this case, he is forced to confront his own son's death and his wife's slippage into being a virtual recluse.
