What does it mean to create a true queer space? Roshida Herelle (she/they), a senior technology and information design major, was motivated by this question when she created her zine, “The Place Keeps Score: Retelling BIPOC Queer Stories at UMD” for her @umd_dcc capstone project. Her creative research explores how place shapes identity and showcases the experiences of queer students of color at this university.

One more spotlight to wrap up First Generation Stu

One more spotlight to wrap up First Generation Student Week! Check out this feature on @gemstoneprogram student Esohe Owie @eh.so.hey from @umdpublichealth.

Owie came with her family to Maryland from Lagos, Nigeria in her early teens, the eldest of three siblings. Adjusting to this new world was challenging, especially when – just a few years later – she needed to navigate an unfamiliar college system. Owie’s parents, who went to college in Nigeria, supported her path to higher education at UMD but had to rely on their daughter to figure out how to apply to and navigate college life.

For students like Owie, and many others who are first generation, first generation immigrants or from other underrepresented student groups, Chantelle Smith founded UMD’s First Generation Student Association (FGSA) @umdfgsa, a student-led organization which gained official recognition in Spring 2024. For Smith, who works as assistant director of Recruitment & Inclusive Communities at UMD’s Honors College, supporting these students is a deeply personal issue.

Check out this feature in today's Maryland Today about the new First-Generation Student Association @umdfgsa ⭐️

The First-Generation Student Association officially launched this semester to support some 20% of undergraduates, or over 6,100 students, navigate the ins and outs of university life and find community with other students in the same situation. Chantelle Smith, assistant director of recruitment and inclusive communities in the Honors College, spearheaded the creation of the organization starting last year. Once a first-generation college student herself, she knew how much students who lacked family experience with higher education were at a disadvantage when it came to the nitty-gritty of college life, and wanted to help create a student group that would be a resource specifically for them.

The group is housed in the Honors College but is open to all Terps, and has partnered with units like the Dean of Students office and the Office of Family Engagement to expand its reach. The association has already hosted a webinar for incoming freshmen that drew some 50 participants and held a networking event.

This past summer, Grace Huang, a sophomore biochem

This past summer, Grace Huang, a sophomore biochemistry major in the Integrated Life Sciences (ILS) program, found purpose at the intersection of biochemistry and public health through an innovative internship at the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. Under the mentorship of Dr. Rozalina McCoy, Huang delved into the lab’s research on diabetes care and health disparities.

If you’ve been in the Anne Arundel basement late

If you’ve been in the Anne Arundel basement lately, you’ve surely noticed a colorful new addition to the space—the columns now feature a stunning mural celebrating Maryland’s natural heritage. Completed this past summer by Honors Humanities student Injoo Lee, the work was created to liven up this common area and create an environment that promotes life and beauty. She was motivated by her hope to pave the way for more public art across our campus.

Last spring, Carmela De Llano Hernandez, a student in the Honors Global Challenges & Solutions (HGLO) program and a junior sociology major, completed an internship with the U.S. Census Bureau’s School Pulse Panel project. Carmela is passionate about civic engagement and yearns to make a positive impact through policy research. The internship aligned with her interest in census categories and their impact on Hispanic/Latine communities.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning this semester, @hgloumd student Matt Zinno makes his way from College Park to Capitol Hill for his new congressional internship. The Rhode Island native is interning for one of his state’s two congressmen, Seth Magaziner, and getting hands-on experience on the Hill.

"It’s incredible to be working in a place as historic as the Capitol," Zinno said. "It means a lot to contribute legislative efforts that can create positive change in our country."
