Turn on or off new services by default

As an admin, when Google adds a new service in your Google Admin console, you can have the service automatically turned on for all your users. Or you can have new services initially turned off, then decide when to turn them on for your users.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Accountand thenAccount settingsand thenPreferences.
  3. In the Release preferences section, click New products.
  4. Select an option:
    • Turned on when released—All users can immediately access new products and services.
Note: After the service is on, you can turn it on or off for an organizational unit or group of users at any time with the Service status setting.
    • Turned off when released—Users can use new products and services only if you turn them on.
  5. At the bottom, click Save.

Changes can take up to 24 hours but typically happen more quickly. Learn more

Note: Currently, Google Workspace Essentials editions don’t include all core Google Workspace services, and aren’t guaranteed to support future new services. Learn more about Google Workspace Essentials editions.

What happens when an Early Access app becomes a service?

  • The service is automatically turned on for users in either of these conditions:
    • The preference for new products is set to Turned on when released (Admin Console > Account > Account settings > Preferences).
    • The service status is set to On for everyone (Admin Console > Apps > Additional Google services > Early Access Apps).
  • To automatically turn off the app when it becomes a service, both the preference for new products and the service status setting must be turned off.
  • Once the service becomes an Additional Google service, you can manage access through its service status setting in the Admin Console.
