I was reading a thread from the University of Texas message board and there is talk about the Big 12 expanding to two, possibly four, schools. The schools they mentioned were UofA, ASU, Colorado, and Utah. If this is legit I think that UofA needs to jump all over this for a number of reasons.
.) The Pac-12 is a MESS. Horrendous leadership, horrendous television contract, most of the facilities are not on par with the rest of the Power 5, and it seems like there is no end in sight. The Big 12 is a better conference than the Pac-12 overall, and moreover, in basketball and football. They have a better television contract for these two revenue producing sports, and this would obviously mean more money for the school.
.) The Big 12 is a better conference for the non revenue producing sports. Primarily in baseball and softball.
.) Traveling for to away games in the Big 12 would not be all that different from the travel in the Pac-12.
.) UofA already has a recruiting footprint in Texas, Utah, and Colorado, so they wouldn't kill off their recruiting base the way that Nebraska did when they went to the Big 10. The other factor to this, is that as bad as the Pac 12 is, athletes more than likely wouldn't shy away from going to UofA if they are in the Big 12.
.) Being in the Big 12 Conference would put pressure on the school administration to get their act together when it comes to the overall athletics program at UofA. It's time to face facts, a majority of the administration of the Pac-12 schools don't give a damn about athletics. It's just not that big a deal to them, unlike the Big 12.
