After the first full week of conference play it's time to see where the Big 12 stands in regards to teams in post season tournaments.
NCAA Tournament Bound
Behind Acie Law's 15.6 points per game the Aggies are 14-2 and 2-0 in conference play with a trip to Boulder tomorrow to take on the Buffaloes. 3-0 is on the way!
At 14-2, 1-0 in the Big 12, the Jayhawks could be playing the best basketball in the conference. At least Oklahoma State thinks so.
Freshman Kevin Durant is the most dominant player in the conference and has led the Longhorns to a 12-3, 2-0 in conference, start. The good news is that the rest of the Big 12 will only have to deal with Durant for one season.
The Cowboys had a huge slice of humble pie Wednesday night in Lawrence but a lot of teams will have the same experience there. Depth will be a problem for the Cowboys this season but they will still be good enough to compete for third in the conference. |
On the NCAA Bubble
Jarrius Jackson's 21.1 points per game has the Red Raiders at 13-4 (2-0) in contention to be in the dance.
The Cyclones are off to a 2-0 start in conference play, 11-5 overall, but reality may set in this week when ISU hosts Kansas. |
NIT Bound
The Huskers are off to an 0-2 start in conference, 11-4 overall, and 0-3 could be coming with Oklahoma State this weekend. Two games apiece against Missouri, Kansas State and Colorado will propel Nebraska to the NIT.
The Tigers are off to the same record as Nebraska and this weekend's match-up against Kansas State is crucial. The winner will be in the NIT driver's seat. WOOHOO!
Same story as the Tigers, just reverse the names.
Opening up conference play at Oklahoma State and against Texas A&M has the Bears at 0-2 in conference, 10-5 overall, but Baylor should rebound to make a NIT push. |
Building for Next Year
Freshmen Tony Crocker (11.1 ppg) and Bobby Maze (7.2 ppg) gives OU a nucleus to build on. If the Sooners can get through the Longar Longar suspension with a 1-1 record then they could make a push for the NIT.
The Buffs are already looking forward to next season because they know that means a fresh start without Ricardo Patton. |
When all is said and done I think the Big 12 has a solid chance of getting 6 teams in the NCAA tournament. There is still a long way to go in the season and the exciting thing is that anything is still a possibility for most of the teams in the conference.
