Abstract: Context. Project managers play a central role in software development projects. Knowing the skills required and responsibilities expected from entry-level software project managers can help those starting a job search and organizations that want to articulate their staffing needs clearly. Aims. To investigate the required skills and expected responsibilities prevalent in the job market for entry-level software project managers. Method. This work collects and analyzes, qualitatively and quantitatively, 50 online job advertisements from the LinkedIn Jobs platform. Results. Overall, organizations look for professionals with a vast list of skills and able to address several job responsibilities. The most expected responsibilities are planning, organizing, and coordinating team activities, establish a good communication with the client, and analyze and communicate project risks. The most required skills are communication, technical knowledge, and planning/managing. Both hard and soft skil ls are expected. However, soft skills are slightly prevalent. Conclusion. Job ads are a valuable source to gain insights into current job market trends and project management role expectations for professionals, organizations, and researchers. (More)
