Problem and Project
Our team collaborated with a leader in marine propulsion systems to develop a machine-learning powered trailer docking mobile application - Ramp Assist.
Using Augmented Reality (AR), Ramp Assist helps boaters guide their boats onto their trailers using speed, distance, and angle measurements calculated based on a custom machine learning model.
Mounted near the captain’s viewing/operating area, the app uses the camera to help guide the bow of the boat directly on to the trailer, greatly improving the trailering process. The application collects trailering data (images and annotations) during the AR experience to be used to further train the model under varied real-world conditions.
We collaborated with ZF Marine Propulsion Systems in all aspects of development, from building the app to training the model, including real-world tests under various marine conditions and situations.
Additional features include boat ramp traffic, tide and weather displays, and the number of launches at a boat ramp.
