Synopsis
Graham Burns and Boulder are shutting off an area around a building site, while Chief is at City Hall taking a meeting of residents who are angry about the disruption the construction is causing. While the rest of the team doesn't fancy trading places with Chief, Cody is busy trying to work out which camp he's going to attend for the Junior First Responder Jamboree. The others naturally have their own ideas about whether Cody should pick law enforcement, firefighting, or emergency medical training. Over at the construction site, a trash bot crashes the barricades and hits a crane, causing it to spin and head off towards City Hall. Graham comms the rest of the team who swing into action. They manage to stop the crane though the meeting is now called off and the irate townsfolk disperse. Chief is just looking forward to the week's vacation he starts tomorrow.
Driving back to the firehouse, Chief believes Cody will pick the option that's right for him. Boulder and Graham are waiting with the suggestion Cody could sign up for engineering camp, and Kade and Dani have decided Cody should accompany them on patrol to help him decide. Though Cody's dubious, they persuade him and he's soon riding along with Heatwave and Kade. As the pair try to quiz him on fire, he spots a fire in progress at the construction site. While looking for an ignition source, Kade spots live gas lines nearby and tells the foreman to keep their equipment away from that area, however the foreman has ear plugs in and doesn't hear him. Next Cody rides along with Dani and Blades, however just as he's wondering if it's a little boring, a fireball strikes a nearby cliff, dislodging a boulder. It turns out it's a safety flare from a hiker with a broken leg. Cody takes the controls while Dani's lowered down to apply a splint. They later return to the firehouse where Boulder and Graham show off an "engineering emergency" — a bridge which may need new supports in a couple of years.
As they break into a series of engineering puns, Cody spots Chase and ask if he can accompany Chief on a patrol. As they drive, Chase presents Cody with a copy of the local statutes, though Chief says being a police officer is more than knowing rules. They find Jerry and Don, who are having a disagreement over a minor car accident, however it turns out Don's car isn't as damaged as he was making out. After helping Mr. Hooton with some dropped groceries, Cody reflects that the patrol was kind of boring. They encounter a speeder, but it turns out to be Edgar Pruitt, whose heavily pregnant wife is about to give birth. Chase provides an escort to the hospital.
Cody is later on dispatch when the rest of the team asks if he's made a decision yet, but he's still undecided. Chief's packed and ready for his vacation. The team rendezvous at the ferry to see him off, only for there to be an explosion at the construction site. They scramble, and find the explosion has damaged a nearby apartment building. Chase has to grab Captain Wild and Mr. Sharma from it as parts of it collapse. Cody spots the broken gas mains which caused the explosion, and as the building collapses further, the Bots work to stabilize it with supports.
With the building now uninhabitable until repairs can be made, Chief puts up the residents in the firehouse. That night, the team goes back to the apartment building to retrieve some of the more important possessions, with the Bots holding the building steady while Chief and Dani go in. As Chief's coming back out, there's suddenly a collapse and he's buried in debris. Though he professes to be fine after they dig him out, he falls unconscious and they take him to the hospital. The Bots later wait anxiously outside the hospital while the rest of the family waits anxiously inside, until Dr. McSwain wheels him out with his leg in a cast. They emerge from the hospital to find the rest of town waiting to cheer for Chief. As they all thank him, Cody pulls out his application form, looks at Chief and announces "That's what I want to be."
