Something of an icon in the bear community.

Grizzly-1 (グリズリー1 Gurizurī-1) is an established legend in the Beast Wars. During a mission to the Arctic region of Earth, the up-and-coming Maximal went missing. After some time, he was able to break free from his icy prison.

In battle, he is able to use a self-produced toxin that causes agitation and confusion, increasing his aggressiveness ten-fold. Usage of the toxin is governed by whether Grizzly-1 uses his mutant head, with which he becomes the raging "Barbearian" (バーベリアン Bāberian). In this state, even his faithful bat partner, Nightshriek, stays out of his way!

Beast Wars: Uprising

Barbearian was a member of the Resistance, a group of Maximals and Predacons fighting against the tyrannical rule of the Builders of Cybertron. He was wrestling with fellow Resistance-fighter Snapper over some petty insult when his cell's leader, the legendary Grimlock, returned from a mission. After breaking up the fight and berating his underlings for neglecting their posts, Grimlock informed Barbearian and the others that he had acquired the G-Virus, and planned on unleashing it against their oppressors.

Grimlock led Barbearian, The Man Terror, Snapper, and Mach Kick on an attack on Tesarus Arena during the gladiatorial games, a target that presented a chance to infect many important Builders. Barbearian was tasked with watching the group's rear as they infiltrated the heavily-guarded arena. Despite making a lot of headway unimpeded, the group wound up walking right into an ambush. While his comrades pressed forward, Barbearian grappled with two bulky Micromasters, preventing them from surrounding the rest of the team. Micro-Aggressions

I’ll crush you with my bear hands! Guh-huh!
Grizzly-1/Barbearian is a redeco of Beast Wars Polar Claw, transforming into a grizzly bear. Rearing him up on his hind legs in beast mode exposes a pair of nasty-looking fangs. His beast-mode forelegs become shoulder-mounted weapons in robot mode: his left leg has a spring-loaded attack claw, while his right launches from the shoulder stub and transforms into his partner Nightshriek, who can also be used as a hand-held blaster-weapon. His robot head has a face on both sides; a normal robot mode one ("Grizzly-1"), and a "mutant" face (the toxin-induced "Barbearian").
He was only available at BotCon Japan 1998, limited to 600 pieces.
This mold was also used to make Survive.

Collect all the nonexistent toys!
  • Grizzly-1/Barbearian was actually the "prototype" for Polar Claw. The first solicitations for the Beast Wars Megas featured the bear mold in brown and yellow (as well as a differently colored Scorponok). The back of the first Beast Wars catalog from the Optimus Primal/Megatron two-pack called him "Grizzly-1", while solicitations sent to magazines used "Barbearian".
  • As such, according to Fumihiko Akiyama, BotCon Japan 98's organizer, the name "Barbearian" was only ever supposed to appear as a pun in his English-language bio, with the toy's name being "Grizzly-1". However, the boxes came back labelled "Barbearerian" [sic], even though his bio card uses "Grizzly-1".
  • While the Beast Wars: Uprising incarnation of Barbearian was not visually depicted, Jesse Wittenrich envisioned him as a "virtual redeco" of Titans Return Deluxe Class Hardhead, which Christopher Colgin later drew for a TFNation 2017 edition of "Micro-Aggressions", which can be seen here.
  • An unrealized idea by Fun Publications would have had the Timelines Mudfighter toy repurposed as a body for Buzz Saw. The accompanying bio card would have described a rivalry between Buzz Saw and Barbearian.[1]
