The horses had stopped in an instant." And another review. Archived "Ask a Teamster" [the horse driving type] columns at Small Farmers Journal, established by Miller in 1976.

History’s Greatest Horse Racing Cheat and His Incredible Painting Trick [Hidden History] In the sport’s post-Depression heyday, one audacious grifter beat the odds with an elaborate scam: disguising fast horses to look like slow ones.
“He was a master, at 38, of the various measures a man could take to bend the odds at the track. He knew, for example, just how much heroin to shoot into a horse’s neck to make him “think he was Pegasus,” as the Daily News put it in 1932 (about 30 milligrams by hypodermic needle, or 160 milligrams down the throat). But it was Barrie’s fingernails that told the story of his particular genius: They were nearly gone, eaten away by the bleach and ammonia he rubbed into the hides of thoroughbred horses so that racetrack stewards, detectives, jockeys, and even the horse’s own trainers mistook them for entirely different creatures.”

BARTENDER: “What is this, a joke?”
So a racehorse runs into a bar... [YouTube] “Reuters reports that a racehorse got loose and busted into a bar near the racecourse in Chantilly, France, about 30 miles north of Paris. Let the Nomad Games Begin!
"It would not be good for the whole world to become New York." A thousand yurts -- "the Czech Republic delegation, for example, was a group of male friends who fished around for an easy sport." -- "The American kok-boru team, some waving their own cowboy hats, brandished the flag of Wyoming" -- "The British ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Robin Ord-Smith, was a bit flummoxed about how his country could participate in the Games. “We don’t really do nomads,” he said. Then, an inspiration: Scotsmen!"

At 4am, the glamour of cowboy life loses some of its attraction
I don't call myself a cowboy… That’s not a title you can just bestow on yourself, it’s something other people have to give you the recognition for. A Mongol without a horse is like a bird without the wings
Horse culture in Mongolia is extensive, but much of its history is not well known. Take, for example, the intricately carved deer stone pillars that are often accompanied by horse skulls and few other clues to this ancient culture, and the fairly intact burial of a possible seamstress from 1,100 years ago, with a sacrificed horse. The last truly wild horses still live in Mongolia, where monuments to Mongolian history feature horses and tribute is still paid to dead horses. [more inside]
Mystery horse braids
From the Fortean Times: "I live in Costa Rica these days. My girlfriends family here own a farm with many horses. She tells me that many times in the past they have discovered some of the horses in the morning with their manes braided perfectly. She says the horses were in a remote part of the farm where there are no people. Anyone have a clue what could be going on here?" Some suggestions from Fortean Times readers: occultists, Bigfoot, and little girls. Warlocks are consulted. Academic papers are published. It gets a little malicious. Just don't blame the hedgewitch!

"In a part of Dublin known as the Liberties, which is also where the Vikings settled 1000 years ago, there is a small community of rebel horse owners. And a few years ago, a travelling street musician who goes by the name, "The Musical Slave", accidentally crashed her van into the wall of one of their urban horse yards – and out came a horse and a few boys. One of them brought her for a spin with a horse and two-wheeler, and from that day on she was hooked. She ended up buying her own horse and moving him into the yard... "
