Longcat was long

Nobiko, a Japanese cat known for an extreme, memeworthy length of 65 cm (well over two feet), has died at the age of 18. I have a clear idea of how this cat got wedged in our consciousness, and why.

The Best of the Web

This is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.

It'll never catch on.

Ye Olde World Wide Webbe (not the Internet which has different birthdays), said to have “emerged from a largely benevolent academic atmosphere”, reaches the grand age of thirty, during which time countless website have risen to dominance and fallen into obscurity. To celebrate, Tim is zipping between CERN, London and Nigeria. While browsers have developed, website designs have changed and unevenly more people get online, the underlying issues and uncertain futures perhaps remain. Take the quiz! I only saw the ocelot smile once, the day it escaped

The foundation that administers the .cat domain for Catalonians just got raided by the Spanish police, but all the media wants to talk about is cats. The office was raided because Catalonia hopes to hold a referendum on October 1 to decide if it should secede from Spain, and in an effort to quash the referendum, the government of Spain ordered puntCat to “block all .cat domain names that may contain any kind of information about the forthcoming independence referendum,” according to a press release from the foundation.

Hope is the thing with fur

"Before we enter into the question of cat videos, we must talk about cats themselves. Cat videos are the crystallisation of all that human beings love about cats, the crux of which is centred in the fact that cats are both beautiful and absurd. Their natural beauty and majesty are eternally just one tiny slip away from total humiliation, and this precarious condition fills us with a sympathetic panic and delight, for it exactly mirrors our own." Maria Bustillos on how cats won the internet.

The business of internet cat videos

“It isn’t just the crazy cat ladies, although they’re there in droves. It’s the six year-olds chanting the name of their favourite cats. It’s the hipsters there smoking cigarettes, hip-hop dudes, country dudes… It is the kind of thing where you have to learn to make everybody happy,”

The purrfect activity for a coffee break

The worst thing about cats is that you can't play with them unless you're physically present. Being elsewhere means being unable to play with a cat! It's a horrible situation, but now there's a solution. iPet Companion lets you select a shelter and control a camera and trigger toys in the selected shelter's kitty play room. If there's other people on that shelter's page, you'll have to wait your turn, but turns are two minutes long so there's rarely much of a wait.
