Juicy: Confessions of a Former Baseball Wife Hardcover – September 6, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
When nineteen-year-old Hooters trainee Jessica Sekely meets Jose Canseco -- one of the most famous baseball players of his time -- she falls in love with the slugger and everything about him. He is larger than life, from his bulging muscles and multimillion-dollar contract to his huge homes and hot cars. And he is as handsome a man as she has ever seen. But his sprawling house in Florida becomes her gilded cage when Jose is on the road, hitting home runs and bedding women in American League cities from Anaheim to Boston. Jessica blames herself and does everything she can to keep Jose faithful—nose jobs, new breast implants, and even going so far as to bring other women into their home for threesomes. But it wasn't enough. It was never enough.
Through it all, she breaks through the icy stares of the wives and girlfriends of Jose’s teammates and learns to honor the code of the baseball sorority -- If you see a ballplayer with another woman, keep your mouth shut!
While Jose, author of Juiced -- the #1 New York Times bestseller about steroids in baseball -- seems intent on self-destruction, Jessica willingly goes along for the ride. Their turbulent relationship careens from steroids to pregnancy, from marriage to the birth of a precious baby daughter, from private investigators to divorce attorneys -- with a black eye. This is the story of a beautiful young woman who falls in love with a hugely successful professional athlete, and who becomes addicted to him and to everything that his success seems to represent. It is also the story of a woman who spends the better part of ten years trying to beat that addiction, and who finds her true self in the process. Jessica Canseco's story is for every woman who has ever fallen for the wrong man. But unlike many such tales, this one has a happy ending.

“Juicy is . . . in its guilty-pleasure way, almost irresistible. Its author is downright endearing.” — – Book Standard

First off we find out that Jessica is ADD and grows up as a farm girl and is a tad naive. This quickly turns into a shallow lifestyle and a first meeting with Jose Conseco. The book moves on from there and the story turns from bad to worse (for Jessica that is). She falls into a trap of a materialistic lifestyle and co-dependency. According to Jessica, Jose cannot stay faithful for an iota (his own neuroses obviously) and yet she continues to ride out the relationship. The book goes through the ups and downs of the relationship and the aspects of co-dependency. It is a completely shallow and voyeuristic view into the lives of both Jessica and Jose (although this is her story and her angle). Jessica redeems herself in the end when she discovers how co-dependent she has been and that 8 years of her life were spent trying a nurse a very dysfunctional relationship.
I gave the book only 3 stars because it is truly trashy beach reading. There is no self-help offered here (and the book does not pretend to be that). It's just one of those guilty pleasure reads that takes the reader into the heart of the tabloids. I like these types of books on occasion.
I wish the best for Jessica these days and actually wonder what she is up to??? One thing is for sure, after reading her story I am happy she got away from Jose.
'Juicy,' a neat take off on Jose Canseco's book 'Juice,' is written by his second ex-wife. What a tale! Most of us grow up in dysfunctional families, most of us then create dysfunctional families of our own as we copy/work through/try to fix/live as we grew up.
This story though creates new (to me at least) boundries in the concept. More than just dysfunctional, these two are nuts. They are both beautiful people, living with more money than they can count, and never really growing up.
I found ths to be a fascinating book. It reads like a novel. Even though you know the ending, each chapter left me in amazement as to what they could come up with next. I realize that this is just her story, and that his story of the maeeiage would be different but who cares. This is not a story with a great deal of depth, but it is JUICY.
I appreciate Jessica's story so much, because I know too many women who are addicted to the mental and controlling behaviors of the men in their lives. Thank you, Jessica, for sharing your story.
