Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big Hardcover – February 14, 2005

The #1 New York Times Bestseller
In Juiced, Jose Canseco, one of the most electrifying and controversial athletes ever to step onto the baseball diamond, shares the untold story of his rise to fame and fall from grace, including a never-before-seen look behind the curtains into the history, dangers, truths, and lies about baseball’s dark secret: steroids.
When Jose Canseco burst into the Major Leagues in the 1980s, he changed the sport—in more ways than one. No player before him possessed his mixture of speed and power, which allowed him to become the first man in history to belt 40+ home runs and swipe 40+ bases in the same season. He won the Rookie of the Year, the MVP award, and a World Series ring.
He was a dynamo on the field, and a magnet for trouble off it. From his frequent run-ins with police, to his wild and often highly public love life, Canseco broke the mold of the big-time athlete and ushered in a new era of super-athletes with outrageous salaries and rock-star lifestyles. But behind the gaudy stats and the glitz and glamour of his public life, Canseco cultivated a dark secret, one that would alter the game of baseball and the way we view our heroes forever. Canseco made himself a guinea pig of the blossoming performance-enhancing drugs movement that was only just beginning to take hold in Major League Baseball. Anabolic steroids, human growth hormones—Canseco mixed, matched, and experimented to such a degree that he became known throughout the league as “The Chemist.” He passed his knowledge on to trainers and fellow players, and before long performance-enhancing drugs were running rampant throughout the league.
Today, this issue has crept out of the closet and burst into the headlines as players balloon to herculean proportions and hundred-year-old records are not just broken, but demolished. In this shocking autobiography, Canseco sheds light on a life of dizzying highs and debilitating lows—and also provides the answers to questions about steroids and the Major Leagues that millions of sports fans are only now beginning to ask.

Amazon.com Review
Chief among his claims is that he introduced Mark McGwire to steroids in 1988 and that he often injected McGwire while they were teammates. According to Canseco, steroids and human growth hormones gave McGwire and Sammy Sosa (whose own usage was "so obvious, it was a joke") the strength, stamina, regenerative ability, and confidence they needed for a record-setting home run duel often credited with restoring baseball's popularity after the 1994 strike. Although he devotes a lot of ink to McGwire, Canseco envisions himself as a kind of Johnny Steroidseed, spreading the gospel of performance enhancement, naming a number of players that he either personally introduced to steroids or is relatively certain he can identify as fellow users. Because Canseco plays fast and loose with some of the facts of his own career he provides fodder for those looking to damage his credibility, but in many ways questions of public and personal perception are what raise the book beyond mere vitriolic tell-all. Those willing to heed his request and truly listen to what he has to say will find Juiced to be an occasionally insightful meditation on the workings of public perception and a consistently interesting character study. --Shane Farmer

From the Back Cover
When Jose Canseco burst into the Major Leagues in the 1980s, he changed the sport -- in more ways than one. No player before him possessed his mixture of speed and power, which allowed him to become the first man in history to belt more than forty home runs and swipe more than forty bases in the same season. He won Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and a World Series ring.
Canseco shattered the mold of the out-of-shape baseball player and ushered in a new era of superathletes who looked like bodybuilders, made outrageous salaries, and enjoyed rock-star lifestyles. And the ticket for this ride? Steroids. Behind the gaudy stats and the glamour of his public life, Canseco cultivated a secret just about everyone in MLB knew about, one that would alter the game of baseball and the way we view our heroes forever. Canseco made himself a guinea pig of the performance-enhancing drugs that were only just beginning to infiltrate the American underground. Anabolic steroids, human growth hormones -- Canseco mixed, matched, and experimented to such a degree that he became known throughout the league as "The Chemist." He passed his knowledge on to trainers and fellow players, and before long, performance-enhancing drugs were running rampant throughout Major League Baseball. Sluggers scooping up pitches at their ankles and blasting them out of the park, pitchers cranking fastballs inning after inning -- Canseco showed the players how to customize their doses to sculpt the bodies they wanted, and baseball as we know it was the result.
Today, this issue has crept out of the closet and burst into the headlines as players balloon to herculean proportions and hundred-year-old records are not only broken, but also demolished. In this shocking memoir, Canseco sheds light on a life of dizzying highs and debilitating lows, provides the answers to questions about steroids that millions of fans are only now beginning to ask -- and suggests that, far from being a passing trend, the steroid revolution is only a taste of things to come.
Who's juiced? According to Canseco's authoritative account, more than you think. And baseball will never be the same.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2005Excellent "read" , very smooth , can't decide if Jose is friend or foe ? It seems what he has written has come to fruition & is the truth , much to the dismay of the baseball "gods" that be ! But Jose himself seems to be looking for self pity , like he's "humble" , whereas he also mentions after he was a plain player he just so happened to be awarded the MVP of that particular team he was on . Seems very well educated in 'roids , but IS NOT a rocket scientist , he does acknowledge that , thinks that 'roids will be commonplace someday with our "battle" of aging . Plays the "race" card far too much , I am an avid baseball fan & never cared that he was Cuban or Latino , or anything other then an American League ballplayer . Nor do any of my friends care where he came from , but all agree , some of the "white" boys were probably "protected" , as will always be the case.........Are his & other players records tainted , read the book & form your own opinion , it's worth taking the time to read , it is an "insiders" look into the game from one of the potentially best players of all time.........I just feel his time in the pros was still wasted , I just have that feeling after reading his book........sad actually ! I'm still wondering & questioning this read , which makes a book worth the price on its' cover .........Donald S. Grzebielucha , Buffalo , New York
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2023Canseco is a whiner whose motto is "its not my fault". When in fact it is. He blames everyone else for his bad decision making. Still he almost had me believing I should take steroids and HGH right away--until I remembered my endocrinology from med school...hepato- and cardio-megaly, frontal bossing, increasing nose and ear cartilage size and other forms of "gigantism", pituatary issues and more. Look at all the facial plastic surgeries that Schwarzenegger and Stallone went through. He outs everyone, except Sammy Sosa who blew it with a corked bat.
And yet it is a good fun read. He and other enhanced monsters saved baseball from the '94 strike.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2008Jose Canseco's "Juiced" really introduced me to a bit of the steroid culture in baseball and the appeal that steroids definitely have. While reading "Juiced", I found myself yearning for the chance to try steroids and see what they would really offer to me (against all of my better judgment of course). He offers such a bright picture of them at times done in a disciplined way that who WOULDN'T want to give them a try when a career depends on them.
The book is entertaining and as Jose says: he is an entertainer. Don't expect anything cerebral here ... just a interesting view of some of the baseball culture that you may or may not know about.
I enjoyed the book for what it was and found it an entertaining, quick read that I enjoyed while floating around my swimming pool. This was perfect for that.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2005He wrote the truth & was called a liar. As for the book, it's easy & about a sixth grade reading level. It is obvious he didn't have a ghost, so he is to be commended on that.
The story of his life. Beyond that it is also a weapon to be used against Major League Baseball. He is bitter, about many things, among them being denied the chance to get 500 homers.
He may not be a liar now, but he did cheat by using steroids. That everyone did it is a childish excuse. He claims he could have never been a major leaguer with the body nature gave him. He tries to explain away his violent, sometimes criminal temper & aggression. Was that behavior the result of steroids?
The highlight of course was his visits to a bathroom stall with Mark McGuire, Raphael Palmerio, Miguel Tejada & others to shoot-up. He helped them do it & advised them. Despite that, I like him & his book. He has a certain style & is entertaining. But squealing on your teammates to sell books & settle old scores is dishonorable. However, this is baseball, nothing more. Congress should stay out of it. They've less integrity than MLB. They have other things to do that are more important.
Will I buy his next book? Absolutely.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2022Very intriguing story. Jose Canseco gives an unfiltered view into his life as the individual that changed baseball forever. His story is full of twists and turns, I could hardly put the book down. Would recommend to any sports fan.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2005This book was well worth my time and money! Im not gonna go into details( you can read the book)...but I'll say this...I believe Jose Canseco. Im glad this book is causing controversy. Jose Canseco is one of kind from his cool looks to his mighty swing. Nobody looked cooler or entertained better than Canseco. Whether people cheered him for his TITANIC home runs or booed him beause of steroids, madonna,or whatever,Canseco entertained. He made most games fun and exciting. Quite honestly, I LOVE cheering for a player just as much as I love tearing a player a new one at a major league baseball game...its gets me excited and I feel like I get my money's worth. In the case of Canseco, I always cheered. Im glad Jose came out with this book. He's a class act and made baseball watchable. Now he's back to entertain the media and the public again by shedding some truthful light on the touchy subject of steroids. Read this back...get mad, get happy, whatever..you'll be entertained!
