Tei-chan’s Roots

- JAPAN / 2001 / Japanese / Color, B&W / Video / 14 min

Tei-chan and the director spent every day together in middle school and high school. But however much they were together, they never talked about the fact that Tei-chan was zainichi (Korean-Japanese). After she entered university, Tei-chan began to introduce herself using her Korean name. Tei-chan's childhood friend takes this as a cue to express friendship and inquire into the world of zainichi Koreans.

Based on the idea of the relationship between “you and I,” this video record from the perspective of young people realistically depicts a microcosm of everyday life.

[Director’s Statement] I was able to find a new form of communication with people using a digital video camera. Rather than confining myself to internal matters, I want to continue to make films that are directed outward and explore the relationship between people and the world.
