I just looked at my bookshelf and there's my copy of "Back Beat", which I thought I had (accidentally) given away! It's a bio of Earl Palmer as told to Tony Scherman. It's incredible, he tells his biographer so many unverifiable stories, just wild exaggerations that his biographer took down as fact. I found one of his best stories later, in a book of anecdotes for Toastmasters. Still, you will come away from the book with the impression that Earl Palmer was the coolest man who has ever lived. Highly recommended.

Baritone and 6-string bass were the same thing back in the 60's, it depended on the gauge of strings they used and the tuning. Most of the baritone tunings were A to A or B to B, when they set them up for 6-string bass it was E to E, an octave below standard guitar.

Baby. A six-string bass is designed to play a much lower range than a baritone guitar, with a significantly longer scale length and thicker strings, while a baritone guitar is essentially a standard guitar tuned a perfect fourth lower, meaning it has a lower range but still retains a similar playing feel to a regular guitar

@Listener Baby: Yes! The simplest answer is that “baritone guitar” is tuned like a guitar but lower, while “six string bass” is tuned like a bass with two more strings added to extend its range. Usually a baritone has strings that are heavier than typical guitar gauges, but lighter than typical electric bass strings.

For the best example of a baritone guitar recording on a "hit" record...go no further than "The Lonely Surfer" by Jack Nitzsche. Glorious tone. When I first got my Danelectro baritone, and tuned it up, that was the first lick I played and I smiled for 2 days afterward. For an example of the 6-string bass application, watch the Get Back/Let It Be films and watch Lennon playing a Fender Bass VI on Let It Be and other tracks. It's also on Back In The USSR I believe, again played by Lennon (fact check if necessary)

There is some footage in the Get Back doc where George is shown playing the Bass VI too, I see it most in the hands of Lennon in the various studio photos from 68-69. I'm not surprised Macca touched it up

The problem with the Bass VI was/is that is has a tremolo bridge, and the tuning can get wonky because of it. All, and I do mean all (or almost all..) of the LA and Nashville players used a Danelectro in the 50's and 60's, and they would often customize it with a metal bridge versus the stock wooden Danelectro bridge so it stayed in tune better. Mine came stock with metal bridge so the wood wasn't an issue. And apparently in LA they'd take their gear to Red Rhodes to do this kind of work.

I have heard a number of musicians say similar things, including Carl Perkins, how they'd hear Chet or Les records and learn them as "live" guitar parts and replicate the delay. That's another level of musicianship! I jammed with a singer one time who did that with Gene Vincent songs, like Be Bop A Lula, where he did the slapback delay "live" with his voice. Blew me away.

Look for a Danelectro with a hard-tail bridge for the classic tones. Now other companies known for metal style guitars have baritones made more for the metal scene which don't have the same classic sound as the old ones if you're looking for the vintage tones. And Fenders with that tremolo bridge can cause intonation/tuning issues, but they look and sound great. But any baritone is a good baritone, good luck!
