Carter Capps, Stephen Pryor –> Seattle
The recent trades left the M’s with one open 40-man roster spot, and today the M’s decided to give that spot to hard-throwing reliever Carter Capps. Ryan Divish of the TNT reports that Capps will be added and called up to Seattle on Tuesday, along with Pryor. Pryor was in Tacoma on a rehab stint initially, but was officially optioned 10 days ago; this doesn’t matter so much, though obviously it’d be great if they didn’t need to use an option with Capps.
As we’ve mentioned, both have elite velocity, but very different mechanics – Pryor is an over-the-top pitcher, while Capps utilizes a weird, low-3/4 delivery that I can’t wait to see in action. Would’ve liked to have seen Capps in Tacoma, but it’s getting harder and harder to argue that he needs more work. As it stands, he faced four batters in AAA, with one flyout and three K’s.

Anyone know what’s up with the Diamondbacks? There are lots of trembling rumors of trying to close a “blockbuster deal”, and reports the Mariners were in touch as recently as last week about Justin Upton… LEAVE MY FELIX ALONE! (crosses fingers)… Although it could be anyone, ’cause they’ve talked to Philly about Cliff Lee this week too.
Yeah, I heard on the MLB Deadline special that the D-Backs were in talks to acquire an ‘Elite’ pitcher. I cannot imagine a contender giving up a piece like that, so that leaves the non contending teams. So, the first player that comes to mind obviously is Felix. All I have to say is that if we trade him it better be for a teams top 4 or 5 prospects.
It’s not Felix guys. Jack Z is not trading him. Relax.
I’m excited for tonights game with Pryor and Capps being called up. Every year I try to get tickets to games surrounding the trade deadline to see anyone the team adds, or to see a situation like last nights with Travis Snider. Now the big question is who ends up starting tonight if Vargas is dealt.
Anyone suspicious the Mariners are just FLAT OUT OF MONEY!? I mean, most of our trades involve the guy walking across the infield to the other dugout, so they don’t have to fly them anywhere!
Suspicious… (hmm… I kid of course, just funny that two of our 3 trades were to the team we were currently playing, in Seattle… I wonder if there was a conversation that went– “how you guys feeling about Brandon Morrow, maybe we should trade back? We’ll give you Delabar AND League…PLEASE!!!?”…)

Yeah, it was interesting to read that Wedge knew neither League nor Delabar were allowed to pitch last night, but the players didn’t know until after the game when they walked into the clubhouse.
I know I was certainly suspicious when Josh Kinney started warming up for the ninth. Figured something was up when Kelley got up as they called Leutge in.
I never thought of Delabar as being a guy dealt, my gut was that Wedge didn’t want to bring him in to give up a gopher ball in a high stress situation. But not having League warming up was curious to say the least.
I consider the Trade deadline, Christmas in July. It’s always interesting to see what your team will add, rather it’s from another team, or a callup.
Looks like Ryan Dempster is the “ace” the Diamondbacks are looking to deal for. He lives in Scottsdale. Note that Patrick Corbin was just scrached from his start in Sacramento today.
Yes, can’t wait to watch Capps pitch and see more of Pryor. The M’s have the makings of a very good bullpen in the near future!

I know Jack SAYS he won’t trade Felix, but that can also work as a really nice way of saying (in no words) “it’s gonna take A LOT!”
(And much as I love Felix, there’s a part of me deep deep down inside that really wants to see Felix pitch in October, for something meaningful, ’cause I suspect he’d be AMAZING with everything on the line… And maybe that’s NOT our team that’s gonna make that happen… I’d hate to see Felix end up the MLB’s Karl Malone… Diehard loyal megastar who never got to the finish line.)
Dempster has 10 and 5 rights and reportedly will only waive them to go to LA. I still don’t think its out of the question that Arizona whiffs on Lee and turns to Seattle and Vargas at the last minute. In the meantime I could also see Millwood go I a waiver trade so its not over for him yet either.
Maybe if the Diamondbacks offered Upton, Goldschmidt and Bauer for Felix. I can dream.
I think Arizona’s all talk. They’re 6.5 games back in the wild card with 5 teams ahead of them. If they can land an ace, I’m sure they will but I don’t think they’ll settle for a Vargas instead.

Heck, the M’s have a great bullpen now! We just traded our worst two bullpen pitchers and we brought up our best two reliever prospects!!

Can someone clarify for me what “use an option” means exactly. Capps just was added to the 40-man and the active roster. If he spends the rest of the season in Seattle, does that mean he does not use an option?
I was actually trying to find the answer to this question last week, with respect to Smoak. Smoak used an option year in 2010 (not sure about 2009), and now in 2012. Did 2011 count as an option year? If 2009 wasn’t an option year, does he have options left next season?

So if I’m understanding this correctly… since Capps was not on the 40-man roster, the “options” clause didn’t apply. He’s now being added to the 40 man roster, but he won’t have used up an option since he hasn’t spent 20 days in the minors while on the 40 man roster.
Regarding Smoak – unless he was in the minors (and not on a rehab assignment) in 2011, that’s not going to count as an option.
MLB Network says M’s are not going to trade Vargas or Millwood. Still holding out hope that we land another bat though since the front office has a history of surprising us.

Yeah, that’s what I’m coming to as well. Looks like Smoak might still have an option as I did find that Texas added Smoak to the 40-man in April 2010, suggesting he probably wasn’t there in 2009. And, 2011 in Tacoma looks like it was rehab.
Capps using an option seems easy enough to avoid. We’re only a month away from September callups, and he can spend as much as 20 days in the minors from here on out.

Vargas and Millwood aren’t all that, and that’s all we have left to trade outside of Figgins (negative value), Olivo (no value), Felix (which would be a salary dump/wave white flag for 2013 move) or cost-controlled kids that it doesn’t make sense to trade. Innings sponges like Millwood/Vargas at the back of your rotation are nice to have in a playoff race to keep from starting a weak 4/5 too many times, but unless you’re just desperate you’re not going to give up much for them, especially since your rotation gets shorter once it’s playoff time (so a top of rotation guy is MUCH more valuable: see Lee, Cliff).
Look at what we got for Bedard- basically, a busted prospect + a B level guy, neither of whom are going to contribute much in 2012 (and I’d say Robinson isn’t a good bet to be much more than Wily Mo Pena). If Bedard is healthy and pitching well (I know, but humor me), he’s clearly a better pitcher than Vargas or Millwood. So I could see GMZ going “no, we’re not going to watch Noesi get shelled for 8 weeks just so we can pick up another B prospect lotto ticket”.
So, if you need 20 days in the minors to burn an option, then we get the option back on Pryor as long as he stays in Seattle this year?
Lee was so valuable, he got us Smoak.
