Rainiers Game Thread, 7/28

marc w · July 28, 2011 at 6:47 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Well, the M’s have an off night, and Dave’s radio hit on KGA’s done… how about checking in on the Rainiers?
Nate Robertson faces off against Carlos Hernandez of Sacramento at 7pm, but you should follow along anyway. No, Wily Mo isn’t in uniform yet, but the Rainiers have several familiar faces in the line-up, and it’s a good chance to check in on the A’s Chris Carter, Michael Taylor and Adrian Cardenas.

If, on the other hand, you’re not ready to deal with Carlos Peguero again so soon, I won’t be offended.

Gameday’s here, it’s on 850AM in Tacoma, and it’s on MiLB.tv too.

Rainiers’ line-up= Seager, Saunders, Liddi (3B), Peguero, Wilson, Limonta, Tuiasosopo (1b), Henriquez, Kazmar.

Except that Peguero doesn’t suck balls in the minors. He’s hitting some ridiculous .372 / .438 / .628 line since being sent down. Who knows, maybe the work they did at the majors is having an effect. Well, at least an effect down there.

Ladies and gentlemen, the new and improved Mike Saunders: the Canadian God of Walks.

To be fair, it’s not like Saunders never walked before.

I don’t ever remember him racking up 15 walks in 10 games

    TIF –
I know, I actually love watching Peguero in the minors. But given the outpouring of bile regarding Carlos, I thought I’d throw in that opt-out.
I’m still stunned that he’s decent in AAA, given that he had an amazing April and then was basically replacement level in AA last year.

Tough way to lose the game on an outfield assist. I’m not really sure how to measure baserunning, and while I like the fact that Fangraphs and Bpro have their metrics, I don’t know them well enough to really trust them. But I know this: if you’re going to measure a player’s baserunning skill, setting speed aside, Johan Limonta has to be in the discussion for worst baserunner in affiliated ball. He’s so, so, indifferent, and therefore bad.
The play tonight wasn’t even his fault, as Brown undoubtedly told him to go, but that was the 2nd time that game that he was out on OF assists. Didn’t make it to 2nd after a single and a bobble in the OF.

It’s one of those Freaky Friday scenarios – Condor and Cust woke up a couple of weeks ago and found themselves in each others’ bodies. Saunders kept quiet because he’s with the big team again, and Cust didn’t say anything because he enjoys getting to play regularly (albeit with Tacoma). 😀

Ryan Langerhans has been traded to the Diamondbacks for cash.

Also, in a move I expect will bring delight to Peguero fans everywhere… Jack Cust has been DFA’ed by the Mariners. Of course we knew it was coming the moment they signed Wily Mo Pena.

There will be much more joy in Mudville when the name Figgins is followed by “DFA.”

Cust, meh … so long. Fair thee well. Thanks for trying. By all accounts – you are a good guy. The USSSA will be calling soon.

Three home runs in four months – he earned it.
