Minor League Wrap (4/18-24/11)
In the last wrap, people mentioned that they looked on these as a sign of hope in a troubled time for Mariners baseball. This week, the affiliated went 8-18. Whoops. Some positive things came of it all at certain levels, but one has to root around a bit in order to dig those up in some cases.

I don’t really have any particular storyline this week that caught my eye, so here’s something different. When I was on the Lumberkings’ website recently, I noticed that someone had organized all the official blogs and twitter accounts for the Mariners affiliates and put them on one convenient page. The Mariners themselves tend to dominate the Twitter conversation, but you can get some other voices in there too on occasion. Like a lot of what social media has to offer, it seems at least theoretically useful.

So Carp was miffed or something that Peguero got the call and he didn’t, I don’t really know, but this was the result for the past week. It’s especially odd considering how low his season line remains, .231/.329/.415 to this point, but he’s apparently seeing and making contact well right now, so who’s to say if the previous eleven games meant anything at all? The samples aren’t even really worth talking about at this point, but because this space should be filled somehow, Carp was awful at hitting left-handers last year and is presently .333/.412/.600 in fifteen at-bats against them, which is something. Another thing which may or may not mean anything: he’s .303/.324/.606 with the bases empty, .156/.333/.219 with runners on, and .095/.259/.190 with runners in scoring position. He belongs on this Mariners team.

Pitching for the Rainiers this week was a disaster, to the extent that I find myself speaking of Chaz Roe. Were this his second start of the last wrap, I’d be okay with it, because he had a 5/1 K/BB in six innings back then, but this, I’m less keen on (the first start of the season was much, much worse). Roe has only had command every other start thus far, but on the plus side, he got through this one without allowing a home run. I would have expected that moving from Colorado Springs to Tacoma would have the opposite effect as what we’ve been seeing, between the home runs and the limited command. I’m not really holding my breath on the Jose Lopez trade being a great gain for us so much as addition by subtraction.

From The Training Room:
Peguero was called up, as you were probably aware of, and that left Daren Brown down yet another outfielder, so they promoted CF Brandon Haveman from Jackson. 3B/1B Matt Mangini also got activated and optioned, which meant UT Jetsy Extrano going away again. Hey look! RHP David Aardsma! He hasn’t been pitching well š Sunday evening, the M’s optioned Lueke and called up Dan Cortes, and also shipped Peguero back to bring in Smoak. Cortes has a 9/4 K/BB in 8.1 innings and nine hits allowed, so this may be a move of no major significance, other than it gives Lueke an opportunity to get his head straight while the rest of us wait for Chris Ray to depart.
Strange Happenings:
Mike Curto had meditations on the recent 13-1 loss in the vein of Wallace Stevens’ “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” and as a recent admission to the UW’s poetry MFA, there’s no way I’m not linking thatā¦ Tui has a 11/9 K/BB in his last ten gamesā¦ For an alternate take on Liddi, check out what Churchill wrote up earlier in the week. In summary, Liddi has been hitting better this week, but has been scouting worse over the years and it’s hard to tell what’s up ā¦ Seddon gave up seven runs in 10.2 innings this week. So much for that!

Where did he come from? The South, Lara, where he hit .312/.475/.548 over the winter. Before that, he was in the East, Nippon Ham in 2009, then nothing. He travels around. He has been part of seven different organizations, six of them before he was twenty-six. Why has he come? I don’t know. I just don’t know. But he’s always been able to hit the ball. He is feared for his hitting of the ball. There were reports of him in spring training. No one knew who he was or how he came to be there, but when he hit the ball, the people knew. How long will he be here? I would not turn your back on him, for he may disappear in an instant, only to resurface in another organization, in another uniform, hitting the ball.

Carraway didn’t begin the year in the rotation, despite being a starter for nearly his entire minor league career. He only moved in once Hensley got injured. Still, he was pretty good in High Desert last season given the context (5.33 ERA, but a 4.71 tRA), and deserves the shot, in my opinion. One caution though, his rotation debut for the Generals, he gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits and three Ks in three innings, which isn’t so hot. We’ll have to wait and see which one is more representative of him in double-A,

Strange Happenings:
The Generals were averaging nearly seven runs a game this week, so of course the story was going to be offense. Triunfel has a seven-game hit streak but remains not quite cool enough to mention above even though nearly half of his hits have gone for extras (I use a .800 OPS cutoff, which is vaguely scientific). I hope to mention him in a more official capacity soonā¦ Nate Tenbrink had four hits in twenty at-bats last week. He also walked seven times and was hit by a pitch. And one of his hits left the yard. But he also struck out eight times. Outcomes!.. I have avoided dishonorable mentions in the past year or so because I don’t think it’s cool, but holy crap, Brian Moran has allowed twelve runs in seven and a third innings on fifteen hits, five walks, and five Ks. Three of those hits have left the park! Dingers aside, it’s between him and Paredes for the worst reliever to start the year… Oh, and on that note, if anyone wants to know how Fields is doing, 7/8 K/BB, but only two hits allowed in 8.2 innings!… In more positive news this week, slightly more at least, Erasmo Ramirez struck out six in seven innings this week, he just allowed ten hits while doing itā¦ At one point this week, the Generals were facing Matt Bush on the mound. Haha, Matt Bush.

During spring training and throughout the regular season thus far, Michael Saunders has been commended for taking a new and somewhat uncomfortable approach and sticking with it until it yielded dividends. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have Almonte, who I’ll remind you didn’t strike out until his third game. There are upsides to what he’s doing, like the fact that he’s hitting the absolute cuss out of the ball, but that assumes he continues to make contact as he has. He has one walk and twenty-two strikeouts now, and the sac flies this week meant that his OBP was lower than his average. Tell me if that seems sustainable. The more things tend to go like this, the less I feel interested, and I’d expect that his eventual promotion to double-A runs the risk of being ugly indeed.

The starters sucked this week so let’s talk about something else. Like Cooper! The line itself isn’t all that interesting, but on Thursday he turned in a four inning performance where he only allowed a hit and a walk while striking out four, and that pretty much won the game for the Mavs. That’s kind of cool on its own, but Cooper is getting five balls on the ground for every one in the air. That’s not a out ratio like I usually do, that’s what’s happening for all his balls in play, and even the best of the groundballers tend to get line drives or pop outs from time to time. Cooper isn’t, and didn’t in the five-game stint he had in High Desert last year. I don’t know if this means anything, but it seems neat.

I think of the Mavs’ transactions this week as a kind of mad tea party where every so often, someone screams “TRADE PLACES!” On Wednesday, 3B Mario Martinez came off the DL and IF Matt Browning went on it, and on Thursday, LHPs Donnie Hume and Nick Czyz traded spots, with Hume making his first start since 2009 on Saturday.
Strange Happenings:
To get into the weirdness of walks for a second week in a row, Carroll has twelve of them now and had nineteen in eighty-one games for Clinton last year. Franklin has ten and recorded fifty last year in Clinton. Fun facts that are actually fun!… While glancing over transactions for the week, I found that a familiar name, Harold Williams, had turned up with Inland Empire. Williams didn’t pitch the last two years and was known mainly to me as a) a former track and field javelin star with horrific command (90/72 K/BB in 76.2 IP in 2006!) and b) a guy trying to support his mother and younger siblings while trying to make it in lower minor league baseball, which is never a good combination. I’ll be rooting for him to stick around as long as he can. Also, the Sixers additionally have a Mike Piazza pitching for them who is of no relation.

Last week, I found it appropriate to gripe about Morban’s plate discipline, which seemed pretty bat at the time, what with the 14/2 K/BB to that point. This week, he drew a bunch of walks. This is a step in the right direction for him, certainly, as he’s closing in on a career high in walks (hint: he’s never played that much), but now I’m starting to look at the strikeouts as slightly concerning, since they’ve popped up in about a third of his at-bats now. Morban himself seems to be concerned by this, as he got ejected for arguing a strikeout on Saturday. He’s been squaring up on the ball a bit more of late and is beginning to drive it, which would suggest that he’s getting comfortable at the plate again. If he keeps doing this, Morban might turn into one of the system’s biggest stories of the year.

It was an interesting, though not very positive week for the majority of the Lumberkings pitchers, as most had some yips in their command. Fernandez had some yips too, though not so severe, but when one considers that he had under two walks per nine last season, having four in ten and a third seems like a bigger deal. At least Fernandez is still getting grounders in the bunches, and he has the best rate there of any of what would be called the starters for the Lumberkings. This has actually been a trend throughout his career, but it’s really taking off now. I suspect that relative to his peers, Fernandez might be a little underrated at the moment, assuming his command straightens out. He got the team’s only win this week and that’s surely something.

There was finally some transaction news, but nothing positive, as RHP Fray Martinez landed on the DL on Friday evening. RHP Jonathan Arias came off to replace him, but has yet to pitch.
Strange Happenings:
On the note of the three outcomes, Steve Kohlscheen pitched 5.2 innings this week and had a 8/5 K/BB in that span, with one of his four hits leaving the yard. Interesting, but not worthy of POTW mentionā¦ Similarly, you have to raise an eyebrow to Carlos Ramirez now having more than twice as many walks as strikeouts, and more walks than hits and Ks combined, but I don’t know where else to go with thatā¦ Thursday evening, the Lumberkings collected four extra-base hits. All of them were triples. Somehow, in spite of this, they’re still two shy of the league leadā¦ If anyone was wondering, Flavor Flav has apparently abandoned the Clinton operation after being disappointed with how it was run, and is now striking out on his own in the restaurant business. This is all quite silly and I won’t write any more about it.

Where was Taijuan Walker placed?
He didn’t pitch much at all last year after being signed, and now?
I always look forward to the minor league wraps; one of my favourite aspects of UssM. That being said, if there was 1 thing I would comment on, it would be that every single Mariners fan wants to know how Dustin Ackley is doing. We all want to know how things are going for him, no matter what the results are. We have an emotional investment into this man who is a big part of the future for this organization, and I want to know how he is doing.

For me, the most interesting and hopefully encouraging news is about AA Jackson.
Most of the interesting prospects who might actually become ML’ers tend to be at AA, while the AAA club usually has a number of less interesting AAAA players (like Carp).
So I’m encouraged by all the good hitting in Jackson.

Not a great week, or year so far, on the farm. Is there a trickle down theory at work? Nick Czyz! I skate on Z’s un-spellable surname by just using Z, if this guy does ever make it to the big team he’s just going to have to be C. Unfortunately that is also the letter used by the head of British intelligence services in the Bond films. Nah, nobody could confuse those two.
Ackley had an off-week, which happens now and then. .258/.333/.310 with nine Ks. When players don’t show up here, there’s probably a reason for it.
Didn’t break with a full-season team, wasn’t expected to, will probably turn up in Everett. No need to rush him.
I think it’s pronounced “Chez”. That phonetic, not the weird French version of the same word.
Will we have Taijuan Walker and James Paxton in Everett? if so I’m going to enjoy Aquasox Games this year (living in Mukilteo afterall).
Paxton will probably skip Everett entirely unless they really take it slow with him.
Speaking as one who has been getting a little too involved with the Mariner farm system for his own good, I wouldn’t mind it if 1) USSM changed their link from West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx to Jackson Generals (they changed their name) and 2)there would be some way to link first to Tacoma Rainiers, and then from the Tacoma page link to Jackson, then from the Jackson page link to High Desert, etc.
I guess that ain’t USSM’s bailiwick is it?

Nice work Jay. If we can’t enjoy the Big League club this year, it’s fun to have something to pay attention to that appears to be moving in a positive direction- the farm system.
Since the M’s appear to be heading to a top-5 minium draft pick in 2012, are there any uber-prospects out there to keep an eye on? Anybody in the Harper/Strasburg mold that makes the race to the Number One pick interesting?
Good news is that Lueke is headed to Tacoma and Dan Cortes got the call to Seattle.

The silver lining of a shot at Nick Williams is something to salivate over as a Mariner fan.
Attempting to handicap the 2012 draft before the M’s have even selected for the 2011 is an exercise in futility.
New talents emerge, highly-taughted prospects crash and burn, teams win-loss records and needs fluctuate wildly. Heck, there’s still no certainty about who should go #1 this year.
It really wont be til late next Winter or early Spring when the 2012 draft front-runners start to emerge, and probably up until the draft itself before there’s any credible idea what the M’s are looking to do.
True enough, but the fact that “neo-realist” has provided some names to track and follow is inspiring enough for the moment. If nothing else, it’s good information to have available.

I wonder though, can there be anybody else that Nick Williams can be compared to – other than Darryl Strawberry? I am sure his mother would want it that way.
The Mariners are likely going to have the 1st or 2nd pick in the 2012 draft – so why not start to throw out some names for public consumption. Last years names that were bandied about are now this years likely top pick(s). Top HS pitching prospects usually flame out faster than a fart on a skillet, though.

I’ve updated the link to the Jackson Generals, and added Pulaski while we’re at it, since it looks like they have some amount of local content. Beyond that, stuff like the AZL team site isn’t really worth it, might as well just use the milb.com stats pages. As far as how the affiliated sites link to each other, that’s out of our control. I don’t even know if I can make WordPress display the links here in something other than alphabetical order.
