Game 47, Mariners at Angels

Dave · May 28, 2010 at 5:00 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Lee vs Kazmir, 7:05 pm.

Baseball is always talking about rule changes that could make the game more appealing to fans, or at least not last as long. In general, most casual fans apparently think baseball games drag on too long and are too boring, neither of which I agree with, but I can at least see where they’re coming from. So, Major League Baseball, you want to make the game more appealing to people? I have a suggestion – ban Scott Kazmir from the game.

Seriously, as much as I’m looking forward to watching Cliff Lee pitch tonight, I’m equally disgusted by the thought of having to sit through a Kazmir start. He’s the ultimate mix of bad pitching, bad command, and painfully slow between pitches. The average time of game started by Scott Kazmir this year is just under 16 days – okay, not really, but it feels like it.

No matter how many runs the Mariners score tonight, we’re all losers, because we’re going to be subjected to the ridiculousness that is Scott Kazmir on the mound. God help us all.

I gotta say, Josh Wilson has done better then expected filling in for Jack.

Not fielding-wise. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a wash WAR wise had Jack Wilson been playing

    Guti grand slam right here?

  3. scottg02 on May 28th, 2010 9:29 pm

I agree M’s Hats, but I wasn’t expecting him to be any good in the field or at the plate.

  4. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 9:29 pm

Guti, prove to everyone your superiority over Tor-ii!!!!

  5. Marinersmanjk on May 28th, 2010 9:29 pm

I think Lee will pitch the 9th.

I’d actually be more confident with him in than Aardsma. Even if we do currently have a 4 run lead.

  6. scottg02 on May 28th, 2010 9:30 pm

What happened to Shields this season? He sucks all of a sudden?

  7. scottg02 on May 28th, 2010 9:31 pm

see, a week ago I would be thinking with the M’s having the bases loaded and nobody out they would somehow screw it up and not score. Now I don’t have that feeling at all.

I just heard Blowers say that since it’s no longer a save situation, Aardsma stopped warming up and they got Shawn Kelley up. I haven’t been following the bullpen usage that carefully, and in this particular game it really doesn’t matter, but how much of a slave to saves are MLB managers? It seems like playing around that 3 run spread in the ninth just forces you to jerk your bullpen guys around. What just happened in the game?

  9. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 9:31 pm

COME ON Figgy! That was just dumb!

  10. Marinersmanjk on May 28th, 2010 9:32 pm

Wow. What the fuck was that.

  11. Swungonandbelted on May 28th, 2010 9:32 pm

    Figgins!!!!!!!!!!!! >,>

  12. UncleCharlie on May 28th, 2010 9:33 pm

this team’s base running is atrocious!!!!

  13. Dutch on May 28th, 2010 9:33 pm

Damn, Figgy, the limited value you have right now is in your baserunning… don’t lose that

  14. Koala on May 28th, 2010 9:33 pm

    that was some interesting baserunning…

  15. MX on May 28th, 2010 9:33 pm

3rd base coach needs to go. Too many running outs. Stopping Ichiro there is just dumb. You are up 8:3 in the 9th with Ichiro running. Ridiculous.

  16. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 9:33 pm

Did Bradley bat from the right? I just looked up Shields’ splits and they are reverse…

  17. fiftyone on May 28th, 2010 9:34 pm

I accept that bit of baserunning idiocy.

  18. Westside guy on May 28th, 2010 9:35 pm

Yeah, Blowers, Sweeney being “very aggressive with his swings” isn’t exactly a GOOD thing…

  19. scottg02 on May 28th, 2010 9:35 pm

I agree Dutch, let Aardsma throw the ninth. Its not liked hes been overworked. Who cares if its technically a save or not.

  20. MX on May 28th, 2010 9:36 pm

I am so glad it’s not League on the mound.

  21. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 9:39 pm

    Let’s go, Double Play!

  22. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 9:40 pm

    Let’s go! Single Play!

  23. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 9:40 pm

Felix is so tough he eats water bottles for dinner.

  24. Dexterwins on May 28th, 2010 9:41 pm

@Dutch — I like think it may have more to do with having 20 games in a row coming up.

  25. Koala on May 28th, 2010 9:41 pm

    MARINERS WIN!

  26. Marinersmanjk on May 28th, 2010 9:42 pm

Well a win. We’re no longer 7 games out of the west boys! AND we pick up a game on the Angels. Let’s do it again with Felix tomorrow!

  27. Westside guy on May 28th, 2010 9:42 pm

Loved the look on Snell’s face as Felix was biting that bottle… it’s like “WHAT are you doing?”

  28. Marinersmanjk on May 28th, 2010 9:43 pm

Felix is so tough he eats water bottles for dinner.

Lol was he chewing on one? I luled pretty hard at that one haha.

  29. EthanN on May 28th, 2010 9:44 pm

    Not bad Mariners…not bad

  30. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 9:44 pm

Maybe I’m drunk, but I LOVE the Mariners! Even IF Kotchman looks like a cocain fiend.

  31. Westside guy on May 28th, 2010 9:44 pm

So… to point out something another person noted Wednesday – anyone see Griffey at all there? He’s conspicuously missing in those end-of-game team handslaps.

    Hey, I think you’re right.

  33. Dutch on May 28th, 2010 9:46 pm

@Dexter – in that case, with a 3 run lead, I would just have Kelley up in the first place. But like I said, I haven’t monitored bullpen usage lately, so I defer to Wak’s judgment.

  34. Dutch on May 28th, 2010 9:47 pm

And yea, I noticed Griffey’s absence. Probably napping, but whatever.

Felix has got to do whatever it takes to get into that mindset for gameday..

  35. Marinersmanjk on May 28th, 2010 9:49 pm

Now we wait for the Dave “downer” recap. I don’t care if we still probably don’t have a chance for the playoffs, IT’S FINALLY FUN TO WATCH MARINERS BASEBALL!

  36. Westside guy on May 28th, 2010 10:02 pm

Ugh, Kreuger… Lopez is the “best hitter on this team”? Does he really get paid for saying stuff like that?

  37. Red Apple on May 28th, 2010 10:02 pm

Long time since I saw a guy strike out nine in a row.

Yeah, a long time — that Tom Seaver dude back in 1970. I think you meant “retire” nine in a row? 🙂

  38. Glen on May 28th, 2010 10:12 pm

Blowers was saying that Cliff Lee retired 9 in a row by strikeout after the game ended. I don’t think that included hits/walks.

I haven’t looked it up to see if it is right or not.

  39. ndrfx on May 28th, 2010 11:10 pm

It’s right. Starting with Abreu’s SO in the 3rd, and ending in the 6th with Rivera popping up in foul territory. There was a walk, a double, and an RBI single in between.

  40. Breadbaker on May 28th, 2010 11:14 pm

Bill Hall apparently had a competent pitching performance for the Red Sox. Who’dathunk?

  41. Red Apple on May 28th, 2010 11:31 pm

Ah, I see…that’s interesting. I do remember in one inning he did strike out the side with a baserunner or two thrown in.

Wonder what the record is for recording outs only by means of strikeout regardless of allowing baserunners. That one may be hard to dig up! I wouldn’t be surprised if it were Nolan Ryan, though.

Granted, it was the minors and it was 1952, but this guy struck out 27 in 9.

So that means bill hall wouldve been our 3rd best reliever and our best backup at every position on the diamond, and we got casey kotchman, I hate you theo epstein, I hate you.

  44. IwearMsHats on May 28th, 2010 11:53 pm

Bill Hall pitched 1 inning and got 3 consecutive ground outs.

  45. z24lax on May 28th, 2010 11:56 pm

Does that upgrade him to our best reliever.

  46. Dexterwins on May 29th, 2010 12:09 am

@Dutch oh, i have no illusions that the 3 out/save statistic didn’t play a role. But if Wak ranks Aardsma as his best reliever, not using him tonight was a fine in light of the next 2.5 weeks. Personally, I don’t find much to quibble with in what ended up happening, intent be damned.
